Didn't his son have that same cancer? How terrible for his family.

I am so sorry for him and his family. I truly have such respect for the man, and he has such a hard life.
That news hurts my heart so much.

Awful news. I've lost several friends to glioblastoma. It's a horrible disease. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) Thinking of the McCain family tonight.

I was so sorry to see this. It's a particularly evil cancer, and I hope that his family is left some privacy.

I was worried there might be more to his blood clot. I've always had a lot of respect for him and I really like his family too. So sorry to hear this about him.

It's very sad news. I always thought he would have made a good president, too bad he was saddled with Palin. It should have been him instead of Bush W.

I don't know how to embed a tweet, but did y'all see President Obama's tweet? "John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I've ever known. Cancer doesn't know what it's up against. Give it hell, John."

Hopefully it is a type that he can recover from. It is a glioblastoma, which is what my mother had. Her prognosis was 6-12 months; she survived 5 months, and that was WITH tumor removal, chemo and radiation. That was ten years ago, though, and I'm not sure if they've made much progress with treatment options since then. I do feel for him, and I agree with SO, who just said that if there were a just God in this universe, John McCain would have met his quota for bad things after five years as a POW. A friend of mine just passed away from this type of cancer at the end of May. Her initial prognosis was 18 months to 2 years. She made it through two years. She mentioned that her doctor had said that mental attitude was important, so she did her best to keep positive and keep her eye on her goal, which was to see her youngest son graduate high school. She almost made it--passed away one week before graduation. Her son is a good friend of my daughter's and it still brings tears to my eyes to think how hard she fought. Cancer sucks. It's touched my life too many times. Best wishes to McCain and his family, and to all our Peas who are fighting cancer too. Merilee SaveSave

This is so very sad. I have a lot of respect for this man. He was instrumental in helping the tribe I am a member of gain federal recognition. I will be keeping him and his family in my thoughts and prayers.

Meghan's statement made me cry. McCain has an incredible strength of will. May it continue to serve him well in the days ahead.

Brain cancer is a terrible thing, and even when the surgeries and treatments are successful, there can still be harm done to the brain. We've experienced that with my father--a pretty dramatic short-term memory loss after surgery and treatment for lymphoma. It's terrible in its own way. I hope Senator McCain will have a good recovery and a good prognosis and a lot of life left to enjoy, with as minimal damage as possible.

This type of brain cancer (Glioblastoma Multiform) is the type my mother had. She lived for just a few days over a year from her initial diagnosis. It's a horrible, horrible disease. Depending on the area of the brain it's in, it can have profound effects on a person's ability to talk, walk, their moods, etc. My mother's was in an area controlling movement and speech. As it progressed the symptoms became unbearable to watch.
And for those wondering about odd behaviors before his diagnosis, it's very common as an early indicator. My step father told me that for several months before diagnosis that my mom would start forgetting things or have some word finding difficulty. A few days before diagnosis, she ran several red lights while driving. She knew she did it and when I asked her why she couldn't find a reason she did it. The final straw was a very long (>1.5 minutes) voice mail she left on my phone rambling about some recipe and such. Her voice was slightly slurred and her speech was disoriented. I thought she was having stroke.

Thoughts are with you. I also lost my mother to this horrible disease about 8 months ago. I can't remember if Temodar (temozolamide) was around 10 years ago. It's the mainstay of treatment following surgical removal. Although it has good results, unfortunately in the majority of cases it comes back and becomes resistant to treatment. The other intensive chemotherapy options are often very toxic with very minimal improvement in progression free survival rates. I know my cancer center is trying some new options frontline but the results haven't been completed yet to see if they give improvements.
