He is a true hero and a fighter. Vicious form of cancer. I have lost a good friend and currently have 2 former students with it. Prayers for strength for him.

It is a glioblastoma, which is what my mother had. Her prognosis was 6-12 months; she survived 5 months, and that was WITH tumor removal, chemo and radiation. That was ten years ago, though, and I'm not sure if they've made much progress with treatment options since then. I do feel for him, and I agree with SO, who just said that if there were a just God in this universe, John McCain would have met his quota for bad things after five years as a POW. Thoughts are with you. I also lost my mother to this horrible disease about 8 months ago. I can't remember if Temodar (temozolamide) was around 10 years ago. It's the mainstay of treatment following surgical removal. Although it has good results, unfortunately in the majority of cases it comes back and becomes resistant to treatment. The other intensive chemotherapy options are often very toxic with very minimal improvement in progression free survival rates. I know my cancer center is trying some new options frontline but the results haven't been completed yet to see if they give improvements. Yup, that was her drug. My recollection is that we were quoted a price of over $16,000 a month (although her copay was $100), and I see from GoodRx that it's about a 10th of that now, so it must have been new or newer back then. She also had a cyberknife treatment at the end, but no dice. (And we passed on trying to get her into the radioactive scorpion venom trials.) I am very sorry you had to live through this as well.

It was clear at the Comey investigation something odd was going on with Mr McCain and I'm glad he's been diagnosed but ugh - what a diagnosis . God bless him 😢
The Donald seems strangely silent on this. Maybe he really does have a compassion by-pass.

A strong man with a strong family. I wish him and all affected strength and peace. I have not read the thread yet so this may already have been mentioned- the apparent confusion about a month ago when he asked questions in the Comey hearing may have been due to this cruel disease. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg)

Terrible news. Explains a lot about his bizarre statements at Comey hearing. Hope he finds successful treatment. I was thinking the same thing, so totally out of character for him at the time. It's very sad news.

I admire him so very much! This is just heartbreaking news. I had to look up his age, he is 80 and turns 81 next month. For some reason this surprised me.

I wonder if trump will say something more compassionate than "we need his vote". I mean who does that??!!!?? He does seem to be socially awkward and inappropriate much of the time, but to be fair that was before the announcement of his brain cancer diagnosis and he did have other, more compassionate words for him. I honestly think the crusty voice comment and we need his vote was meant to lighten the mood. This is not meant to handslap you at all, I just think that true, important criticism of him starts to get lost in the sea of statements that leave out the rest of the story. Then we start to lose credibility when it really matters. I don't want people to have stopped listening when we are talking about something they really need to sit up and listen to. Our credibility matters in this.

Even if many of us disagree with McCain's politics, I think many of us would say he is a statesman who loves his country. Could this open up a dialogue or hope of bipartisan work to improve the ACA? I can hope.

We half joked about what he was doing in the hearings.. they even did a clip of it on the news I felt really bad. I'm not a fan of his but I resepect him and his office and all that he's done. I do really like Meghan McMcain. I was really moved by her letter and Sen Hatch's as well. I really feel for their family and what he has to go through. it's soo hard. Thoughts and prayers for all of them. He also loves baseball I hope that's something he can continue do or watch to help him.

He isn't afraid to speak up and express his thoughts and I respect that, along with his long service to this country.

As a cancer survivor, I would not wish this horrible fucking disease on anyone let alone one who has already suffered more than most of us can imagine. I don't often agree with his politics but McCain is one the last "Lions of the Senate". He is an honorable man, respected by both sides as well as world leaders. Whatever the outcome, his guidance will be sorely missed.

We lost our best friend to glioblastioma 7 years ago next month. It's a horrible disease.
Perhaps the fact that they found it when they weren't looking for it (as opposed to after he exhibited enough to make them go looking) will help improve his odds because it's that much earlier that they found it?

I was so sad to hear this. No, I did not vote for him but I always respected him and appreciated his candor and willingness to stand up for campaign finance reform and other issues. McCain is a true lion of politics and his voice will be sorely missed, especially these days. I hope he can beat the odds one more time.

Glioblastoma has killed several relatives on my mom's side ... it can actually run in families like that. It's not an easy cancer to treat. I hope McCain is able to overcome.

I lost my father to this monster 10 months ago only 10 days after his diagnosis. We also saw slurred speech and thought it was a stroke. We were so ready for the stroke diagnosis, that while he was having the mri, we were researching post-stroke options, therapists, etc. My dad's bff also died from this and it never ever crossed our minds. While researching about glioblastoma, I found Cheryl Broyles on facebook. She is a 17 year survivor with multiple recurrences. I often read her updates hoping that doctors and researchers learn more and find a cure, her attitude is amazing, and I know there is so much more than attitude to beat this. She also wrote a book, but I haven't had the strength to read it yet. I hope Sen McCain has a good prognosis and smooth recovery.

IMHO it would have been rude & dismissive toward anyone. The fact that he relegated this very respected American Hero makes it all the more distasteful.
