Discussion between me and DH. I never do because it's not like I can return the gas if I don't like it and one less piece of clutter....
DH says "but what if you get overcharged?"
If I get "overcharged" I probably wouldn't be able to find the receipt anyway...
So do you get a receipt, and if so, have you ever had to use it?

I do, because that receipt is your proof of purchase. If there is ever a problem with someone else driving off without paying for their gas and they're driving a car similar to yours, you have the time stamped receipt to prove YOU paid.

No never.
It's part of how I keep paper clutter out of my life. Never take any unnecessary papers.
I don't take restaurant, fast food, or gas receipts. If I'm asked "do you need a receipt" for anything, my answer is always no.

I always do - but only because my car is a business vehicle 60% of the time, and I enter all my gas receipts into my accounting program so my accountant can do her magic at tax time!

DH always does, as he has a fuel card as part of his car package, and needs to hand the receipts in to work, so they can cross check them with the accounts.

No never. Whenever I'm given a choice to opt out of a receipt, i do. I hate all that paper. Plus, it posts immediately, so I could always log in to my back to prove I paid if that came into question.

Yes. It is proof of purchase in case you are falsely accused of diriving away without paying.

I nearly never do. We have to pay before purchase here so proof of purchase is not necessary.

I use to always print it but I have lately been saying no.
All that it did was sit around and collect with other receipts, which I just end up shredding. I would never know if they overcharged me by a few cents or dollars and I never compare the receipts to my statement. I would know if I was overcharged by a lot or if I was double charged, but I think I could resolve that without the receipt.

I can see on the pump what the charge to the credit card is going to be so I don't understand how it would be over charged, and all pumps here require payment before pumping so no one is going to drive off without paying and cause confusion on similar vehicles.

No never, for the same reasons you've stated. But strangely enough I always take them at convience stores, drive thrus, etc. I just glance at them then throw them away but I always take them. No idea why.

Absolutely! I am parionoid that if I don't have a receipt and drive off after I pumped my gas that the cops will pull me over for stealing gas. If I have a receipt I have proof I purchased the gas! Jen

You can't pump gas before you pay here, so that's not an issue. You can here. Some of the pumps on the outside lanes of the station are usually prepay only for that reason, but other pumps are not. My DH was an assistant manager at a gas station when he was in college, and most of the time drive offs occured at night when the gas station was slower and didn't have as many people working.

A few years ago I decided to stop doing it. It just ended up in the garbage anyway. I will get one though if it isn't my usual place or out of state. Once I see it on my online account, I toss it.

I take one just in case there's a skimming device on the pump. That way I can prove which is actually my receipt. Not sure if that would work, but I don't want to take any chances.

I get a receipt for everything and toss it once it comes through my statement. And yes, once I was charged for another person's gas because of a malfunction on their part. I don't know if having the receipt would have changed the situation but I did have it and used the info to report it. I also always get one at the grocery store (and everywhere else). I have been overcharged several times and the receipt was my only proof. Funny I never find them undercharging me haha

I never used to, but twice it happened where I had final transactions that were well over and above the amount of gas I purchased (like I ended up paying for the person after me, too). I started requesting receipts after the 2nd time (and no longer use that gas station), and it hasn't happened since.

Yes always, not only for gas but everything I buy and I keep all receipts for my credit or debit card payments until they've gone through my bank or credit card statement. I toss the cash ones when I get home.

No, it's just clutter, and we can't pump gas here without pre-paying. The police in our state (WA) used to respond to gas drive-offs, but then they stopped doing it because it is a 100% preventable crime, and if the gas stations didn't want to make it so, that was on them. They could still report the theft, but there would be no in-person police response.
DH keeps them when we RV because he's obsessed with tracking our MPG.

For those of you who are concerned with the station saying you didn't pay, here is a story. I used to use Exxon thingy that you swiped at the pump to prepay. I did it but it didn't register but it allowed me to pump the gas. I left and then looking at my account, I realized that it didn't register. I knew the date and time so I went back to the store to pay for the gas, they looked at me like I had 2 heads and told me "then it was your lucky day" and said to just go. I know that isn't the norm but it was odd.
I do not print the receipts. More waste, more clutter, more crap. I understand for business purposes but my BIL keeps them for all his cars and then he puts them into a binder and tracks the gas mileage of each of his cars. It's part of the history of the cars. He builds cars in his spare time and races in rally cross so while I get it, I don't get it. They also have small bags of receipts. If it is over 30 days old, it gets tossed unless it is a big ticket item that I may need for warranty purposes.

Yes, because DH like to track the MPG thing. So I wait for the receipt and write down the mileage.

No. My regular stations are prepay, but even if they weren't, I'd just use my credit card records to show I paid. The only time I use a receipt, is if I'm using the car wash and they put the code on the receipt.

No, it's a waste of paper. I will often tell clerks in other places that I don't need a receipt.
I wish more places would allow for digital receipts. My grocery store will ask if you want a paper or digital receipt if you enter your loyalty#. I only ask for paper when I know I have ibotta rebates because they haven't linked their rewards card to ibotta yet. If it's just a quick "we need more milk" trip, I opt for digital.
