Never. I hate receipts.
What's the point of a gas one unless you need reimbursement? Reimbursement is different, so once in a while I will take it if I need it for that or something.

Never, it's right there on the pump and I'm not getting reimbursed so who cares. I haven't gone inside to pay for gas in five years.

Yes in case I get bad gas. Then I have proof of the transaction and the station where I filled up How would you prove it was bad and therefore you're entitled to a refund? How would you know it was bad unless a mechanic told you damage resulted from bad gas--but again, how would you prove that? How long do you keep them, just until you fill up again? Seems unnecessary.

I'm not concerned about being accused of not paying or having bad gas. I want to be sure that the correct amount shows on my credit card (never use a debit card for gas), and that there isn't any problems with a card skimmer or some other fraud.

Only when I'm on vacation, because I keep all my vacation receipts to see how close I stuck to our budget.

Yes, so I can keep track of our budget. I recycle it straightaway afterwards.

always- I get receipts for everything. I just always have. And also because my boyfriend regularly balances our checking account, and verifies all our credit card accounts, using Quicken, to.the.PENNY. This too. I reconcile all of the charges against the credit card statement monthly, and DH's gas is deductible so I need those receipts to enter them into Quickbooks. We're both self employed so we have to keep our credit card statements for tax purposes because there are business expenses on them. I've had oddball charges show up on my statement in the past and have had to cancel my card because of it, so now I always, ALWAYS check the statement against what should be on it. It would have been really easy to overlook if I was only checking as I paid for stuff.

Always. My husband is an anal asshole about receipts. We have a stupid amount of bills and receipts he's convinced we need to keep for ten years. I don't try anymore.

Yes in case I get bad gas. Then I have proof of the transaction and the station where I filled up I have never heard of this. What makes gas bad and what happens if you do get it? Water in gas is most common. Screws up your engine. Happens here in flooding sometimes.

Long enough for plenty of other people to report it as well. Happens more often than you might think but you know within a day of driving off bb

No I don't. I make sure I check the price on the pump before I go in to pay, so I can make sure I don't get over charged. haven't gone inside to pay for gas in five years. I wish! The petrol station closest to my house had pay-at-the-pump option and I loved it. But when it changed hands they got rid of the pay-at-the-pump. Most of the petrol stations here are now owned by the major supermarket chains, and they want you to to go inside to pay so you will then end up buying something else in the store. I don't know one single petrol station that has pay-at-the-pump anymore.

They're still out there, but they're pretty rare and will be a small business only.

I honestly have never considered being accused of stealing gas before this thread. But pumps here have been pay first since before I started driving.

Always now, ever since a gas station attendant tried to claim that DH was trying to leave without paying. He was able to show the attendant that he had paid, fortunately, because he had paid with a credit card, and it was in the station's record. The attendant wasn't happy that someone had gassed up without paying, which is understandable, but my DH nearly got blamed for it, which would have had legal implications if he'd been unable to prove he'd paid.
Now we pay cash for gas, because gas stations are high risk for credit card skimming, so it is even more important for us to get a receipt up front when we pay cash.

Well I cover the gas station at our grocery store and here approximately who gets receipts.. 10%, maybe 20%. Most people don't. People who do, is typically for work. Of course it fluctuates day to day.. but on most given days I have a trash can FULL of receipts.

I do, because that receipt is your proof of purchase. If there is ever a problem with someone else driving off without paying for their gas and they're driving a car similar to yours, you have the time stamped receipt to prove YOU paid. This never happens at our store. When someone drives off without paying, it's RARE that they are ever caught much less going to find that person and on and on. Only about 3% (at our store) pays before pumping, which I think is a silly thing to do these days.

I see a lot of responses of 'in case I am accused of stealing or whatever'
In 30 plus years of driving, I have never been accused of stealing gas, or had to prove I did or didn't get gas. I wonder how many people really get accused? Or get charged the wrong amount.
At our gas station (where I work at the grocery store)... I can't image how that would even happen (maybe at an older type station) but everything is so computerized, that the only way you could be charged more if is that I would literally enter the wrong amount, but if you are pumping gas you would know immediately I gave you $30 dollars of gas instead of $20. So unless between two people totally not paying attention.. it is almost impossible to do so... other than a 'computer glitch' I guess.
I've learned a lot in the last six weeks covering the fuel center (which I HATE).. blech... but it's been an eye opener for sure.

I forgot to mention that my credit card only gets charged $1 at the time of pumping my gas. Then, a few days later, it updates to the actual charge that I incurred. That's another reason I get a receipt. I want to make sure I'm charge the correct amount on my credit card. My station even has a note at the pumps about the $1 charge. I guess it's like a pre-charge to make sure I can charge to that card. This is true for us too. What shows up right away is the $1 charge with a $50-$75 credit hold on the card until the actual amount updates and my account is charged for the actual amount.

I always get a receipt. That way, I've got proof that I paid for my gas in case some crazy mix-up happens and the attendant thinks I was stealing gas and drove off. That's my proof that I paid. Just like when I go into a store, I always get a receipt and a bag. Even if it's just a diet Coke, I want a bag! It's crazy to me that there are still places where you do not have to pay before you pump. Here, you could never drive off without paying, because you cannot get gas until you pay--credit card at the pump or cash inside.

Yes, but I'm the weirdo that keeps a spreadsheet of all our expenses, and I do verify the receipts to the cc bills.

I do. Once I swiped my card, pumped gas, and as we were getting ready to leave the attendant came out and accused us of not paying. Thankfully I had my receipt, he still brought me inside and tried to argue because it didn't show up in his system. I had paper proof on my side. I also keep my receipts so I can balance my checkbook at the end of the day. I get rid of most of my receipts at the end of the year after I pull what I need for my taxes.

I take one just in case there's a skimming device on the pump. That way I can prove which is actually my receipt. Not sure if that would work, but I don't want to take any chances. This is why I take it too, I toss it when I get my next tank.
