Perfect description! I don't know anything about her quotes about atheism, but I've found the less I search for spiritual meaning, God, whatever... The more at peace I have become.

I'm not a huge fan of Oprah, won't buy something just because she likes it or endorsed it. I don't think she's all that, wouldn't buy tickets to go and hear her talk but I do admire her for being successful.
And she does seem like a genuinely nice person.

If nothing else I feel like she tries to bring thoughtfulness and decorum into her conversations, more than can be said for most of the talking heads on TV these days. She seems fairly genuine and I do appreciate that she treats people respectfully. Plus, she introduced me to Gayle King. Gayle on CBS This Morning is the best thing. She cannot keep her face from expressing how she feels about some subjects. And then every now and then her mouth follows when she makes a "pronouncement" about something. She often says in those instances what I am thinking as I watch. Gayle's on my short list of people I'd like to have dinner with. Lol.

Did she always have so many things on her list? I hadn't realized it was out and was flipping through the items - but 102.... I don't have that kind of time for a slide show. Someone give me the cliff notes version. I actually looked at the whole list today! :-D I ordered the Vionic shoes because I have serious feet problems, I already have a pair of the flip flops and like them, and I ordered them through a GMA special—half off! I am a fan of the Peepers brand of reading glasses that she has recommended for the second year in a row. Last year they had a sale, and I was still able to use the Oprah code and got a great deal on a bunch of glasses for me and DH. I plan on doing the same this year. Other than those two things, I saw nothing that interested me. Erin

I'm another one that has really never cared for her. I could never understand her appeal at all. I did like her in a movie I saw once--but can't remember the name of it, so guess it wasn't that memorable after all!

I like her a lot. I remember growing up watching her show and she really seemed nice and respectful of her guest. I loved watching her Christmas giveaway shows and when she would help families out. I don't really pay attention to things she recommends though because I always assumed it would be out of my price range anyways lol.
One of my favorite movies is The Women of Brewster Place,,she plays the main character in it and I think she was an amazing actress in that movie.

I looked at the list. There were a couple things I thought looked neat, however, Oprah is really out of touch. I mean, a $110 pie really needs to come clean my damn house. NO PIE is that good. It's just not.
I saw her on GMA this morning and they showed her something from her list and she looked like she'd just seen it for the first time and was like "I LOVE IT". So, someone else probably curates the items for her.
Having said that, I did enjoy looking at the list, and lists like this, because I"m always looking for something different and creative for gifts or myself.

Acknowledging that people have value aside from their appearance and weight? I mean, it's kind of important. They mentioned her name several times in the interview. I don't care more than anyone else because I'm fat, but if that's what you're implying you can just say it. It doesn't hurt my feelings. There are a lot worse things to be in the world than overweight. I didn't just watch the interview a second ago, I don't know how many days ago I saw it, so I don't remember her name. Why is that hard for you to understand? I know nothing about her so I can't talk about her value other than a wonderful compliment she gave to Oprah. I thought this thread was supposed to be about our thoughts on Oprah? One of the reasons I like Oprah is because she represents the average weighted woman and her magazine reflects that from the clothing she advertises to the people she gives makeovers to. And no doubt the reason Oprah reached out to your friend was to embrace women in the industry that don't fit the usual mode. "There are a lot worse things to be in the world than overweight." I agree with that statement, however she's morbidly obese which is a serious health issue.

I applaud the network for hiring her not every female is thin and it is nice to see a woman with some weight being cast on a show. It isn't hard to look up a name.

Is obese really the first thing you see and the only thing you notice about her? Kate from This Is Us. The daughter from This Is Us. The sister from This Is Us. The younger actress from This is Us. The girl with brown hair from This Is Us. You could've even used her name with 'the actress from This Is Us' and clearly communicated who you were talking about but so often you seem to choose wording that makes you sound mean and out of touch. You're smart and well traveled. In my experience that usually that translates into being open minded and at least semi-accepting. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around your choice of words and the way you make yourself sound sometimes and deciding if the views you project are real life or if you're playing a role on this board. I've never watched the show so I don't know her name nor will I remember it. I don't know what any of the other actors on the show look like so I wouldn't know if someone else has brown hair. Yes her weight is the first thing I see when I look at her. If I wanted to be mean I would have called her morbidly obese (which technically she is but I chose to omit it) or the fat actress. This seems to be a very sensitive topic for you. It would have taken just a few seconds to google her name.

I don't read her magazine (though I want to check out that list), don't watch her channel very often, and wasn't a regular viewer of her show. Still, I just love her as a person. I'm in awe of what she has accomplished. And I too LOVE BREAD.

Oprah is totally overrated but Chrissy Mietz's body of work means you had better know her name. *laughs*
It is nice to see an actress who isn't rail thin being cast for major roles. Wonder who paved the way?

Well, I am not big mad at Oprah. I used to watch her all the time when I was not working. I always loved the Favorite Things shows. Bought the magazines. She just got to be too much. Too over the top and cartoonish in how she presented some things. She was just everywhere all of a sudden. She may not be this way at all but she acted as an expert in whatever was being discussed, the book being recommended, the topic of whatever. I think this explains well what I was trying to say. I used to watch her too and then she was everywhere. I feel overwhelmed watching her now. Its like you can't escape her! I do give the woman credit for being open to her weight struggles. I think many of us can relate, myself included. And I have no idea what "big mad" means, so I doubt that was what I was meaning.

I found what you were trying to say easy to understand. "I don't know why she bugs me so much. I noticed her magazine in check out last night too. Every single thing was "Oprah's tips for..." or "Oprah's guide to your best life". I'm sorry, who died and made you life guru? I must be PMSing because all that positivity just flew all over me. And I think the short answer would be when millions of people value your opinion....though no one has to die to make you a "life guru" if they did you could choose who has to perish because you're just that rich. But seriously isn't she living her "best life" in spite of some pretty challenging circumstances?

Oprah can suggest that SHE thinks atheists must believe in God if they're in awe of the universe, but that doesn't have anything to do with what I think. She can think that all she wants, it still doesn't change my beliefs about spirituality, nature, or the universe. (or about her- plenty of people believe things that are different than me...)

I wondered who did. So I don't know why you read ONLY where it wasn't. Though if we concede she is among women who paved the way for other women be it victims of sexual abuse, women struggling with their weight, etc I can't imagine why anyone would call her "overrated". Well I can imagine why but it still doesn't sit well with me.

i like oprah. i think she really does want to use her success as a platform to help others. AND over the years i have read many excellent books that i may not have if they didn't have the "oprah book club" logo on the front.
as for her "things", i never pay attention, they are usually too rich for my blood!

I used to watch her on the food network and really enjoyed her. Then she was every where all the time. I don't care for anyone that gets over-saturated like that. I'm fine with my smaller doses of celebrities I respect and admire Oprah but stopped watching her show a few years before it ended.

I didn't like anything from the list this year either, I usually don't. Just means we have different tastes. On the one hand it does seem natural that she would be paid to endorse these brands but on the other hand she seems too big to even need that? I always felt like her magazine was advertising too many expensive products. I used to read her bookclub selections long long time ago, but the books recommended in her magazine don't appeal to me. But I do love her makeovers of people in the magazine. The obese woman from This is Us said Oprah, whom she had never met, randomly invited her to dinner at her house. She showed up nervous and Oprah was so warm and inviting that she felt so at home and described it as "well she's Oprah". Meaning no surprise she knew how to make a guest comfortable. I love Oprah's magazine covers, I know they are photo shopped but shoot if I had the money I'd have someone make me look thin in my pics too. lol In one recent magazine Oprah showed 20 girls from South Africa having dinner outside at her house. Apparently in addition to the girls academy she built there 10 years ago, and personally funds in the millions, she also connects with them on a personal level by sending some to college in the US and invites them over often. She calls them her surrogate children, I couldn't believe it! I agree with Anabella. I dont watch the show and this is the first thing I would have said to describe her.

I was morbidly obese not long ago. I have lost over 60 lbs and have 50 more to go. I know if I was asked to describe the characters on This is Us I would describe the character of Kate first by her size. Why? Since the beginning her size has been the focus of almost all her story lines. I have watched shows with over weight actresses and their size never comes up but with Kate it's who Kate is. Randall, Kate and Kevin are who they are and the show is about how they got that way. If someone was to ask me about Randall he would be the black son that was adopted. His character is shaped by his skin color. Kevin would be the stereotypical handsome struggling actor.

Not to defend vapidness but I wonder if anyone will attack your character, intelligence and passport stamps as a result of describing an obese woman who plays on obese woman as obese.
Now say what you want about Oprah though hahaha

I haven't seen her 2017 list but I read a local article saying Greenberg smoked turkeys from Tyler, TX made the list again (it was on it years ago). They are SO GOOD! We're from east TX so we get them nearly every year and you just can't beat a Greenberg smoked turkey!
