I don't watch This is Us (so not my kind of show) but every ad I've seen has mentioned the character's weight. So, given that I have no idea what the actress or character's name is, and I don't expect anyone else to either, physical descriptor would be my go-to.

to toss my two cents in, lol... In the context of THIS thread- which is about Oprah- I personally wouldn't have even bothered to describe the actress at all if I didn't know her name. I would have phrased it more like "an actress from the TV show This is Us was invited to Oprah's house, and Oprah, who she had never met before, was an exceedingly gracious hostess." Because which specific actress it was isn't relevant-- what's relevant to the topic at hand is Oprah.
(it seems perhaps that what annabella said is because obese was just what stuck out in her mind most about that particular actress. is that really all that horrible?)

It is better to use a person's name or refer to other characteristics than the physical ones especially if they are characteristics that are often maligned. Sometimes you can't and that's okay, I am often described as the one with the accent when people forget my name and my coworker who is Korean the same, the difference is its hard to Google "that lady with an accent who works at this school" and it is not hard to Google "this is us cast" and use her name. TLDR: how you refer to people matters

I think Oprah is very accomplished and very generous but I can't stand the way she yells all the time when she is trying to make something seem soooo exciting. It is so contrived.
That being said I will take one of everything on her list.

I didn't just watch the interview a second ago, I don't know how many days ago I saw it, so I don't remember her name. Why is that hard for you to understand? I know nothing about her so I can't talk about her value other than a wonderful compliment she gave to Oprah. I thought this thread was supposed to be about our thoughts on Oprah? One of the reasons I like Oprah is because she represents the average weighted woman and her magazine reflects that from the clothing she advertises to the people she gives makeovers to. And no doubt the reason Oprah reached out to your friend was to embrace women in the industry that don't fit the usual mode. "There are a lot worse things to be in the world than overweight." I agree with that statement, however she's morbidly obese which is a serious health issue. Her name is Chrissy Metz. I applaud the network for hiring her not every female is thin and it is nice to see a woman with some weight being cast on a show. It isn't hard to look up a name. I agree, it would have taken all of maybe 5-10 seconds to look up her name. Describing her as obese was not couth... at all. IF she MUST be described by her weight, something a little gentler than "obese" would have been kind.

I guess I could have googled her, but on an Oprah thread, my general interest tanks. Given that her weight is a major plot point for the character she plays, even without ever seeing the show, I knew exactly who Annabella was referring to, because advertising - as an actor, it’s how she’s being sold.

I am shocked that people think it is OK. It is no secret that she is medically morbidly obese but that is so very harsh.

She wasn’t even called“the obese actress”, she was described as “the obese woman”. Nails on chalkboard to me.

I've never been a big fan or paid much attention to her, although I used to watch her show several years ago and liked it. She has done a lot of wonderful things to help people, and that's just how I remember her.

OMG enough with the "obese" flailing. FFS are we politically correcting that word too?
Obese is obese. Sorry it's so offensive but it IS medically correct terminology. And I agree with Dalai, saying the actress's name wouldn't be very helpful to anyone on this thread if they don't watch the show. And I'm sorry but she's just not that big of a name yet, to have that sort of name recognition. What made her special and stand out from EVERY OTHER new actress on the scene *is* her obesity. Embrace it the word, own it, she certainly is.
As for Oprah, I'm an Oprah girl. I was in my young 20's when her show went national and she was there in my life for 25 years. She taught me and showed me a lot as I navigated adulthood.
I sobbed and sobbed when her finale aired. I was going through a huge life change and the show ending at that 25 year mark just made it even worse for me. (job layoff)
But I *understand* why she turned off so many people, with her larger than life personality. She has done remarkable things. But that doesn't mean she's no human.
Her ego? OFF THE CHARTS. I'll never forget the way she brought the Hermes employee on her show to absolutely roast him for an employee who refused her, Oprah entry when the store in France closed. She's Oprah for God's sakes..open the doors wide, the Queen has arrived! Ugh.
Her finale show at first was amazing, but it went on for two episodes and it was just too much adulation for one person and it made me uncomfortable. I could go on but you get what I mean.
Still, I miss her show it was absolutely the best and no one has filled that void. I don't watch her Network, nothing really interests me and I'll watch the Where Are they Now show if someone catches my attention, but meh.
I don't care for her magazine, too much bs psycho babble, but I get why she's on all the covers, she's got a powerful brand that sells. She's the product.
I totally get why people are 'over' her though.

Because that's how Kate describes herself in almost every episode.

I've never watched the show so I don't know her name nor will I remember it. I don't know what any of the other actors on the show look like so I wouldn't know if someone else has brown hair. Yes her weight is the first thing I see when I look at her. If I wanted to be mean I would have called her morbidly obese (which technically she is but I chose to omit it) or the fat actress. This seems to be a very sensitive topic for you. Acknowledging that people have value aside from their appearance and weight? I mean, it's kind of important. They mentioned her name several times in the interview. I don't care more than anyone else because I'm fat, but if that's what you're implying you can just say it. It doesn't hurt my feelings. There are a lot worse things to be in the world than overweight. I adore you and your attitude. Whenever I see one of your posts I know I will smile. I was cracking up at the picture you posted with the sheets. You keep life real:) Thnaks for always being you!

If Oprah was described as that obese woman instead of by her name there would be plenty of people up in arms over that. The same people here defending that kind of description of a woman are they exact same kind of person screaming if a person in politics or actor using that kind of word describing a woman of size. Again it is not hard to be kind, have manners and goggle a name. I also believe that Oprah would find it offensive that people were describing Chrissy as that obese woman.

Learn to speak the truth. Wonder if Monique, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Octavia Spencer, Patty Labelle, Aretha Franklin would take offense to being called obese woman instead of by their name? I think so. I have no problem with Oprah and have said nothing negative about her.

Learn to speak the truth. It's really not that serious and or personal. I didn't say you said Oprah was overrated just like I didn't say Oprah was the only plus size woman who paved the way for the obese actress on This Is Us. For the record a plus size black woman did in fact pave the way for Oprah and many other women of size .

I kind of love Oprah. I don’t love everything she does, but I’ve got mad respect for what she has overcome. I mean, good gravy, she is richer than God. She gives crazy tons of money. My only real gripe with her is for unleashing Dr. Phil on the world.

Paving the way for Dr. Phil should be a -1 for her legacy...but Gayle isn't Oprah's only friend....Maya A. Nikki G., Nelson M. etc. Many might also credit Oprah with Obama's presidency.

Olan, you certainly seem to be taking people's feelings on Oprah personally. Olan believes that anything less than adulation for black celebrities makes one a racist. She said as much in a thread about Beyonce. Anyone who dislikes Beyonce and Oprah is not expressing personal taste, but hatred for black women. She's a troll and she's trying to rope someone into an argument.

Did she always have so many things on her list? I hadn't realized it was out and was flipping through the items - but 102.... I don't have that kind of time for a slide show. Someone give me the cliff notes version. I actually looked at the whole list today! :-D I ordered the Vionic shoes because I have serious feet problems, I already have a pair of the flip flops and like them, and I ordered them through a GMA special—half off! I am a fan of the Peepers brand of reading glasses that she has recommended for the second year in a row. Last year they had a sale, and I was still able to use the Oprah code and got a great deal on a bunch of glasses for me and DH. I plan on doing the same this year. Other than those two things, I saw nothing that interested me. Erin I didn't read the whole thread yet but I stopped dead in my tracks.. you mentioned Vionic shoes.. I have been looking for 'good' shoes and my sister recommended them, but I haven't pulled the plug.. now I am surprised to see those on her list. I will check them out again.

She was born poor black and female now she is a billionaire spreading black girl magic and joy all over the industry *in my Oprah voice* I'm not taking this thread personally at all especially not with the 2017 black women are having*** lol I assumed the jest was clear in my text An Oprah fact about her life before Chicago: "She became the first black female news anchor before the age of 20 in Nashville, starting with a few gigs as a local anchor before landing a co-anchor position in Baltimore. She was sexually harassed and humiliated at her job in Baltimore, but didn't need to quit - she was fired seven and a half months after joining." Obama endorsement and NFL: www.lifezette.com/popzette/what-the-nfl-can-learn-from-oprahs-obama-endorsement/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/05/03/oprah-endorses-obama-2/***2017 The Olympics (track and field, swimming, gymnastics etc.), K. Harris, Auntie Maxine, twins for Bey, Issa Rae career, Lena Waithe win, Solange for the baby sisters, Sloane Stephans, Serena win @ 2 months pregnant, Janet also with the billionaire husband and new baby, Malia and Yara attending Harvard together, all those babies who we saw off to Ivy League schools, natural hair isn't a trend anymore, 97% of us knew the damage 45 would do to the republic...

So back to Oprah.. I used to always watch her show (or at least try to watch the ones that interest me).. sometimes they were not my cup of tea. I have always liked Oprah but after her show ended I really didn't 'follow' her much. I don't get her station on my plan and I wouldn't pay more to get it. I don't like her magazine, although my MIL seems to think I read every single issue because she gives them to me. I glance at the cover to see what topics but 99% of the time, eh... I don't care if she is on every issue.. I'm more way into Ellen these days... I love how she is so giving and love the stories she airs.

I think Oprah is a force of nature. She is ridiculously rich, beautifully generous, and I still get the impression that she would sit and have a cup of tea with me like a regular non-billionaire.
I don't watch talk shows, so her show never appealed to me. I love her as an actress and think she is so underrated in that respect.

Just took a look at this year's list...nothing seemed interesting and is was way too long. For me, Oprah jumped the shark a long time ago...her fawning over Obamas was a real turnoff to me. But she was getting boring. Her new soup line looks interesting and I will give it a try.
