Out of curiosity, I went to Zillow to see what the most expensive house in my immediate area looked like. It is listed for $22,888,88, which is an odd price. It has 5 bedrooms, 8 baths, and is 12,500 sqft on 1.09 acre. That doesn't sound like a big piece of property, but in my area of typically small lots, it is huge. The house isn't exactly my taste, but I like it much better than the Herman house. I love the rugged wood beams in the ceilings and the extensive stonework. I can picture making pies on the two huge islands. Heck, I could put a bed in that window-filled dining area and live in just that and the kitchen quite happily. Last year's taxes were $124,767.00! I cannot imagine having a tax bill like that. The schools all rate a 10, which I did expect. Irvine public schools are known to be the best. I am trying to picture living in a 12,500 sqft home, but I can't. Their master bedroom wing must be the same size as my whole house. I wonder how many people are currently living in it? Irvine HouseSo what is the most expensive house in your city or town?

I have to say I love that kitchen and dining room with all the windows.
Most expensive is $16 million - been on the market a long time and my understanding is that a big Warriors star owns it...
Least expensive right now is $1.05 million for 1300 square feet....

Most expensive currently on the market is $19.5 million. It has 11,676 sq. ft with 5 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 half baths. Lot is 5.23 acres. Property taxes due for this year are $234,764.87. However, the HOA fees are only $1,500 annually!
ETA: See the link in Merge's post for this house. This is the most expensive on the market, but there are more expensive homes in this area.

There are a few boring McMansions in my area that are sitting around £600,000 but they're awful. If you drive about 10 miles away, and want to spend a bit more (£790,000), you can get The Mill House, Cleghorn. It's a beautiful sandstone villa, built in 1903, with stables and a riding arena. It's about 7000 sq ft and I would move there tomorrow if I could afford it!

I am also in OC. 8 is a lucky number in Asian cultures and there is a large population of them in Irvine. 10 acres is gigantic in that area! (Oops I reread and saw my mistake! 1 acre is still very big for the area.)

Merge - I saw your first post and was going to say that's just a starter home in that area! That's the fun of this - to see the most expensive house that is currently on the market today. I love that home's glass walls! But again, the property tax on these places just makes me choke! Thanks to Jarvis, my taxes are very reasonable. And my house, which is itty bitty in comparison to these homes, is still too big for me. I am getting a shock when checking out Zillow for the homes in Oregon. The house prices are surprisingly reasonable, but their taxes are more than double what mine are currently, for a house less than half the size, which is what I am interested in. That is going to be an adjustment for me.

Usually, homes from that era have such tiny bedrooms, but that place is so spacious. I love the vintage toilet with the tank up on the wall. Yeah, I could see living in that place, even though it is way too big for me. It has such a peaceful and timeless elegance about it. And that price, compared to the $22 million house in my area is unbelievable. I checked the exchange rate and it would be roughly $942,945.81 in US dollars. That is an incredible price. Still totally out of my price range, but amazingly reasonable for the size and condition of that place. I have always had a love for older homes.

It has gorgeous grounds and I am finding that I would really love cooking in these huge kitchens. That master shower is awesome too.

This one is $33,250,000 after a price cut of $5,750,000. It straddles two counties (Sonoma/Napa). Looks beautiful.

$995,000 5 bedroom on 1 wooded acre. It has a pool. It's a fairly dated McMansion built in 1984. Not sure why it's priced at that, there are several nicer, newer equivalent homes for $100,000 less.

The picture with the two horses on the hillside is breathtaking. Does anyone else wonder what all of these people do for a living to be able to have homes like the ones we are posting? Some would be family money, I imagine. Especially this particular property since it has only had two owners. How incredible would it be to grow up on that ranch?

I don't want to put a link since I'm in a tiny town, but the most expensive in town is $260,000 (yes, that's the correct number of zeros). It's 3000+ sf, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath. Built in 1890, looks to be mostly updated.
Not too far away is another home that is on 115 acres, list price is $674,000. 1800sf, 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath. Log home, built in 1991.
I'll be surprised if either of these sell for anywhere near those asking prices.

$1,474,000 for nearly 10,000 square feet and I know this house! I didn't know it was for sale.
When I had my window treatment business, I quoted some treatments for them but they didn't buy anything. I don't know if the original owners still have the place or not. From the photos, they did have treatments made but it looks like for 2 rooms only and they used some cheap shades in the master bedroom but that was it. To me, it was clear they were house poor from the beginning. When I first went there they had this gorgeous house with beautiful finishes but it was empty. I know the designer who did the initial work but he was no longer on the project. The funny thing was the house had almost zero furniture. They were living there but had beds in two bedrooms, a card table and some straight old wood chairs like my grandmother used to have. That was it. Actually I'm not even sure the child's room had a bed, it may have been a mattress on the floor. From the photos they did add furniture and some accessories but in the last 5 years or so they really never did furnish it like you would expect.
It's a beautiful home but I can't imagine someone paying that much for the house a few miles out of our town where almost everything is fast food, Walmart, a dead downtown and not even a hospital. We have good schools, a caring community, a pleasant climate and pretty countryside but you can have all of that in a much less expensive home.

in my zipcode - there are two houses selling for $750,000 each - that's as high as it goes.
#1 4 bedroom, 6 bath, 6011sq ft on 2.53 acres, built in 1973. It has a pool and pool house with full gym, a 1500sq ft master suite and has been on the market nearly a year
#2 5 bedroom, 3 bath, 4318 sq ft on 80 acres, built in 2003. Has a guest house,45 acre lake area, metal building and 20 acre hay field. It has been on the market nearly a year as well and is broker owned.

This is the Stearns mansion (of Stearns and Foster). My friend is the listing agent. It is 20,000 sq. ft., with 10 bedrooms and a built in organ (you have to see the photo of this!) for $1.8 million. I actually don't think this is the most expensive, just definitely the most interesting in history, materials, and craftsmanship. Stearns Mansion
