Good opinion piece (for all the deplorables) Your response to Trump’s racist ‘shithole’ comment will be remembered
What did you say when President Donald Trump referred to Haiti, El Salvador and some African nations as “shithole countries”? What did you say when the president of the United States followed that comment by suggesting he’d rather see more immigrants from countries like Norway? Whether now or in the future, you will be asked this question: What did you say? Did you call out the obvious racism behind those statements? Did you acknowledge that the leader of the free world — by title, anyway — had shown himself to be a white supremacist, casually expressing his dislike of brown-skinned immigrants and preference for white European immigrants? Were you outraged that such comments from a sitting president were antithetical to the ideals that have always made America a beacon of hope and opportunity? What did you say? Did you speak out? Did you denounce the comments, as Rep. Mia Love, a Utah Republican whose parents came to America from Haiti, did, saying in a statement: “This behavior is unacceptable from the leader of our nation. … The President must apologize to both the American people and the nations he so wantonly maligned.” Or did you keep quiet? Take note, because you will be asked. Trump’s has been a presidency filled with jaw-dropping moments of offensive behavior, but this one will stand out over time, both for its profane nature and its naked racism. So what did you say? Did you look for excuses? Did you toss out a “Well, what about …” scenario you thought might take the heat off? Did you scream something about “identity politics” and try to pretend that this is the fault of others, not the fault of the transparently racist old man in the White House? Did you say he has a point? Did you say, “Well, those countries are shitholes, aren’t they?” Did you forget how people once described immigrants from Italy and Ireland? Did you forget the words on a plaque at the Statue of Liberty? “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Did you forget those words, or just ignore them? Did you smile about a tax break and say nothing? Did you not put the pieces together and consider all the other times Trump has shown us exactly who he is? Did you tamp down memories of his calls for the execution of the Central Park Five, even after the young men, four black and one Latino, were found innocent? Did you explain away what Trump was implying in this tweet from 2013: “According to Bill O'Reilly, 80% of all the shootings in New York City are blacks-if you add Hispanics, that figure goes to 98%. 1% white.” Did you disregard his years-long birther crusade against the nation’s first black president? His description of Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals? His regular criticism that immigrants coming from predominately nonwhite nations are examples of those countries’ “worst people”? Did you not let yourself see the pattern? Did you twist logic into knots and blame it on the media? On political correctness? What did you say when our president called other countries “shitholes” and you had to shield your children’s ears from profanity on the nightly news? What did you tell your children about this moment? How did you explain the president’s words? Tell me, what did you say? Mark it down, let it be known. Because you will be asked this again someday. And if you stayed silent, if you made excuses, if you tried to fool yourself into believing this is appropriate presidential behavior, if you let it slide because this presidency might somehow line your pocketbook, then you will be remembered as complicit, as one who stood by and let America’s decency get dragged through the mud. And if you laughed, or if you smiled, or if you nodded your head in agreement, you will be remembered just as Trump will: as a racist, a fool and an absolute embarrassment.rhuppke@chicagotribune.com
I've been saying basically this here at 2peas for some time now. Olan

I don't know why he is denying what he said. Even Fox news is covering this story as true. And Fox News was mocking the fact that CNN "Completely freaked out." Well of course they did you idiot. Everyone with any compassion for human beings is freaked out.
Also, here is a statement from the WH via Fox News: “Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” White House spokesman Raj Shah said.
Um, okay....but how you "fight" and respond tells a lot about your character. Does anyone in the WH admin know, care or understand that?!!
I will never, ever understand the mindset of some people. And I'm thankful for that.

How ANYONE can still support this asshole is beyond my comprehension. It's got to be pride, it's the only think I can think of unless they actually think and feel the same way that asshole does and if that's the case, then fuck them too, they're assholes too.

You mean children born to parents with Norwegian passports? Because I find that highly doubtful, considering the annual emigration to the US seems to be less than 1.000 persons. If you are talking about babies who have Norwegian ancestors, then yes, that is possible since only Ireland had more emigrants per capita than Norway. No it's the total number of Norwegian born immigrants currently living in the US - I pulled it from: www.migrationpolicy.org/programs/data-hub/charts/immigrants-countries-birth-over-timeBut it includes students as per this at the bottom of the page The term "immigrants" (or "foreign born") refers to people residing in the United States who were not U.S. citizens at birth. This population includes naturalized citizens, lawful permanent residents (LPRs), certain legal nonimmigrants (e.g., persons on student or work visas), those admitted under refugee or asylee status, and persons illegally residing in the United States.

Funnily enough, people from countries like Norway probably think the US is has become a shithole since his administration has taken over. Hell, I'm not entirely sure I wouldn't put us in the shithole category, or maybe just a shit ditch at this point...

Despicable. And what if they ARE from struggling countries? (Or circumstances? I know my grandparents all thought Ireland was pretty sh!tty because they were hungry and poor.) I had to memorize the inscription on the Statue of Liberty when I was young and I still remember the words: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. The wretched refuse of your teeming shores. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” I soooooo wish that Ms. Liberty would come down from her pedestal and whip his ass!

"I've said it before and I'll say it again: The immediate, short-term reaction to blatant racism in the Oval Office is for Congress to #CensureTrump -- right now! Sends signal to world that Trump is not us. The other stuff -- like impeachment -- will require the November election"
Please call your Congress person. Demand censure - at the very least. Show the world we DO NOT STAND BEHIND this obscene president.

I am from Norway. We have for the last year been watching this SHITSHOW of a presidency unfold in international media. There is no respect for Trump in the Norwegian population. I have never heard a single person in my country say anything that might indicate that they support him in any way. And believe me, we do discuss him! We are basically rolling our eyes at everything he does. And we sympathize with the US population who did not vote for him, but still has to endure him as a president. The US is one of our favorite places to travel to, but we are a lot more hesitant to visit in this political climate. I have friends of color. Born and bred Norwegians without blonde hair and blue eyes. They are definitly not visiting the US for a while. I can't speak for ALL Norwegians who are not blonde and blue-eyed, but my friends are choosing other holiday destinations. Because of Trump, the US is about to become a shithole country of its very own. Why would we want to visit or move to a shithole country? We are fine right here in Norway. I was proud of our PM after the visit. She is not a person I voted for, but she is smart and patient and she knows right from wrong. She showed a lot more diplomacy than I would have in her talks with Trump. I hope you will think of Morocco as a place to visit. I LOVE living in this shithole African country. The people here have taken me in as one of their own. At this point, I have no desire to return to what was once my country.

I've been trying not to be angry toward those who voted this asshole into office. They are responsible for this shithole administration. Trump is responsible for his actions. Those who voted enabled him to have the platform. One more thing...always another point that you think the Cheeto can't go any lower and he does. I hate him! I hate him! I hate him!

Please call your Congress person. Demand censure - at the very least. Show the world we DO NOT STAND BEHIND this obscene president. Under the catgory of irony, my senator is Dick Durbin. (And my congressman, who is black, is reminding us on Twitter that it's especially important as we enter Martin Luther King weekend that we remember that our children watch what we do and say...) I can make some noise, but not like a lot of you. So I've just taken the advice of pattyraindrops and made a donation - I chose Refugee One, a resettlement organization in Chicagoland. One of my New Year's resolutions is to put more money where my mouth is.

I believe this is called hedging. I find it hard to believe in a small group of people, one of whom is the president of the US, that they don’t “recall” something the president said.
ABC News..
“JUST IN: Sens. Cotton, Perdue on immigration meeting: "We do not recall the President saying these comments specifically but what he did call out was the imbalance in our current immigration system." abcn.ws/2FvjWVm”
Just proves how low the GOP has sunk. It’s gone from a few inches above the ground after trump was elected to as low as the floor of the Grand Canyon.
Disgusting.
