I think you added the bolded part. I didn't read that in her post. That is how threads go downhill fast. Not sure what you mean here, donnie. I did say that in my original post. When I read what gia said, she was all worried about the snowball effect of banning one type of gun leading to banning way more guns. To me, this shows that she is more concerned about being able to own guns than about protecting human lives. There is a heirarchy of importance here with human life superseding owning things. In my opinion anyway.

I know YOU added that. THAT isn't what SHE said. THAT is the problem. Thanks for the clarification. However, she inferred that. When you see mass shootings like this and all you can do is go on about the possibility of some guns being banned and that being a slippery slope, that's what I understand. I don't understand the mind set AT ALL that gun rights are to be protected at all costs. Because that's what is being said. Anything else is deflection.

I've seen both of those devildog. But they miss the point. Easy access to guns is what is causing this. You will never be able to get rid of bullying or mental illness. Never. There will always be disturbed people. If they don't have easy access to guns, they won't be able to cause as much carnage. It's about the guns.

Yes, registered like I have to register my car. Training and license to use it. Insurance too! Most people agree with background checks and a waiting period. And then the very people who needed to protect themselves the most (poor and living in high crime areas or very rural areas) will be priced out of gun ownership. Sucks to be poor and need to protect yourself or your family. The problem with the car comparison is that people may own and drive as many cars as they want on their own private property without a license or insurance. One may also build from scratch a vehicle and drive it on their own private property without government involvement. Not in my state can you do that. Every vehicle—even if it’s just sitting there doing nothing, must be registered. Not to mention, who cannot obtain a drivers license—-just think if that would apply to guns!

I don't understand the mind set AT ALL that gun rights are to be protected at all costs. Because that's what is being said. Anything else is deflection. I did not infer that. It IS what YOU inferred. Despite that you flat out said I don’t care if people die... for the sake of understanding I'll try to explain further... No one wants innocent children to die, or innocent anyone to die. Yes, even the people who have a different idea than you do of what the solution is to this problem, do NOT value an object over human lives. They simply understand that the solution of banning one particular gun in order to prevent deranged people from using it for a mass shooting is only going to leave them to move on to another gun. So, following the banning logic, then we’ll “have to” ban that one. And so on and so on and so on. Until there are no more guns and they move on to cars, then bombs, then matches and gasoline and knives. The problem is not fixed, children are still being slaughtered, but we’ve now taken away the rights of law abiding citizens. We’re looking for a solution to the problem that actually does what we ALL want it to do and one that doesn’t strip away the rights of law abiding citizens.

It’s presumptive to assume that banning a gun commonly used in mass shootings won’t fix anything.
If we take a look at other countries who have put gun controls in place, their numbers of deaths are way, way less than those of the US. Kids aren’t being killed by these weapons in schools.
Why this type of gun? It’s easy to obtain and it kills.
Other countries have fixed, to a much better extent, gun problems.
Creating better gun controls is not taking anyone’s rights away, no matter the rhetoric that is spread.
It really boils down to the NRA and it’s die hard followers, just don’t want anything to be done. That is why they pay millions to be protected.
As far as the argument of “law abiding citizens” —Nikolas Cruz was one. By the few regulations out there, he was legally allowed to posses guns.

The AR15 is not any easier to obtain than any other legal gun.
Law abiding gun owners who have never, or will never go out and shoot up mass amounts of people, do not deserve to have their rights revoked no matter what rhetoric you spout.

There will always be disturbed people. If they don't have easy access to guns, they won't be able to cause as much carnage. It's about the guns. I agree with you to a point. Yes, the guns are doing the actual killing. I've said elsewhere that when it's easier to buy guns and bullets than allergy medicine, we have a problem. If my family has to take a field trip to Walgreens every 10 days to get some Claritin-D (because 3 people take it and one person can't buy enough), we need to re-evaluate. But we also have a breakdown in society. There's a lack of compassion and empathy, there's no regard for human life (from a lot of people), people don't fear the consequences of their actions. The guns are here. To me, there's a lot that has to be done to try to right the wrongs and that starts at home goes on up to Congress. I read the foster parents of Nikolas Cruz knew he had a gun arsenal. I'm going to assume they also knew about his other troubles from killing animals to getting kicked out of school. If the neighbors were aware, I'll guess they were also. So why in the hell did they not intervene? Why did they allow those guns to be anywhere near him in the first place? I live in the Chicago suburbs. Last year Chicago's top cop, Superintendent Eddie Johnson, said this about gun violence and criminals: “They think the judicial system in Cook County is a joke. They just don’t fear it, and until we create that mental accountability to them to not pick up a gun, we’re going to continue to see this cycle of violence, and it’s just silly, it is,” Johnson said. “It’s silly on their part, but even more tragic is the leadership doesn’t listen. If you are in charge of these communities, and you have something to say, or you can do something to prevent this, and you don’t, then that’s a failure on you. Shame on you, because you should be.” Again, the guns are here. It's unrealistic to think limiting access alone is going to turn this around.

Please don’t insert any other meaning/twist/play semantics with what I wrote. 2. Nikolas Cruz was a law abiding gun owner, by all accounts and legal regulations, until he went and shot up a school. So was the Las Vegas shooter, law abiding all the way. So, one doesn’t really know who is law abiding...until they are not. My comments were not some “rhetoric” party line, NRA speak, the were/are relevant to the context of my entire post, my words, not just a few cut out snippets. My comments were simply the fact that both those shooters were law abiding gun owners...until they weren’t.

Totally off subject right here-- This week, one of my daughters was getting ready for the day. She has three sons. Her husband was home. All of a sudden they heard a BIG bang from the other end of the house. On investigation, they found someone had tried to break into their home by trying to kick their back door opened. Thankfully, they had a chain lock on the door and whoever it was couldn't get in. If they had gotten in, no telling what would have happened. My son in law IS armed, and I'm sure he would have done whatever he had to do to protect his family. I'm thankful the person wasn't able to get in!! Donnie, I missed this earlier — I’m glad everyone is safe, that’s so scary!

Unfortunately, they didn't know how to use it, and someone pushed some buttons on the security ap, and the alarm went off. Our 10year old grandson ran to the bathroom and locked the door!! Scared him half to death. But it was only the alarm thank the Lord!! I think they know which buttons not to push now!!

The gun debate is one that has never gone well at the Peas. I wish it hadn't really made it's way into this thread since there are several "mainstream" threads going on, and it has kind of derailed our drama-free haven. I said in the OP that I wasn't going to police this thread because I can't really, but I ask ALL of you to please try to refrain from discussing someone personally or their posting style here. Go bug them on another thread if you feel you must, and let's keep this thread llama-free. Thank you Now, while I won't get into the traditional gun debate, a friend linked this article on Facebook, and I thought it was so worth sharing. Our world could use more thinking like this! I'm finding it funny that so many are against Trump's plan that the government picks out some of the food people on assistance eat but never said a word when "someone" picked out what lunches kids ate at school (for ALL kids--not just the free lunch program). I am not sure what you mean, but at our school each child has a choice of 5 different main courses each day (at least one vegetarian, one turkey/chicken, one beef, one dairy free) and about 7 side items they can choose from. I assure you at our school even the pickiest kids find something to eat. Also, our schools big change to meet Obama’s healthy lunches were things like serving whole grain buns instead of white bread, using whole grain crust on pizza, using reduced fat cheese, adding a cup of granola with the yogurt option, serving whole apples instead of applesauce cups that had added sugar, serving milk instead of juice for lunch, etc. In other words a whole bunch of stuff the kids don’t even notice but is making them a little healthier. Also, I guarantee you that kids that bring their own lunches throw away at least as much, if not more then the kids who buy lunch at my school. This is what I've seen as well. The actual contract for the food is local, so the school has some local control over what exactly is served, as long as it meets the guidelines. My kids rarely complain about school lunch, and often choose the salad bar option. This seems like a "common core" argument, where parents thought common core was a textbook that the feds mandated rather than a standard to be met (and the schools chose a curriculum/method locally). But I'm no expert on the food program.

I did not state what you are trying to emphasize or what you think it sounds like. Please stop trying to push that issue as that is not what I stated, and I clarified it, yet you’re telling me what I said/meant. 2. Any of these/combination thereof: -require a 30 day wait on gun purchases -require gun owners to carry liability insurance -Require mental health checks, via a medical professional -adapt similar gun laws/regulations and/or bans as other countries, that have effectively and successfully reduced the rate of gun deaths -stop allowing pay for play—congress should NOT be taking money from the NRA -since current laws are ineffective/not enforced, change them to work and enforce -no more gun purchases at gun shows with out mandatory 30 day wait -require gun owners to have xxx hours of training every so many years There are about 88 pages in our state manual for obtaining a drivers license and operation of a vehicle —more than there are for owning a gun. Doing nothing is not working. And no one knows that a ban won’t work.

Here's the deal Gia. Whether you believe it or not, it's a fact that easy access to guns causes these massacres. When you are immediately going on about how no guns can be restricted ever, you are saying owning guns is more important than keeping human lives safe. End of story.
