I think the food boxes are good in theory. I do think about those who have food allergies or other food related issues. I would think it would work the same way the gourmet boxes work. Don't those give you the option of stating likes, dislikes and food allergies?

who making money from delivery and packaging? how to do you handle people who can't cook (no kitchen), don't know how to cook, allergies, distance from cities, no storage, ... and massive waste of people getting food they don't like or don't want? our church has a food pantry (food supplies by local food bank.. we just distribute).. given our clientele are poor asians and russians, there are definite things that are not taken as they have no idea what to do with the items. then, it doesn't provide the fresh food people need to be eating.
looks like a big waste of money.

You do have to think about flipping the mindset around. Working single mother qualifies for food stamps. No time. Gets staples delivered to her door. There are many ways to find efficiencies especially if there is segmentation.

I really don't know how I feel about it. I know when I was a little girl my grandmother received food--big chunks of cheese and dried milk--I don't know what else. I do remember she couldn't use all the cheese every month. I also know that without that little bit of help, she wouldn't have had anything to eat at times. She had no choice of what she received. She got what was in the box, and she was grateful.
eta: I DO think that trashing the idea before we get any details isn't the right way to go. IMO, the food stamp (or ebt card) program does need to be looked at to change some. We had a neighbor that was a drug addict and somehow got money from the food stamp cards to feed his habit. We had others here in our town that sold their food coupons (when it was a coupon deal) and spent that money on drugs. My husband had a job and had to pass drug tests to keep his job. Drug testing should also be mandatory to receive federal assistance. (IMO)

Just bumping this so we don't get lost! I like having a conservative thread! I know because there is sometimes I want to say stuff on some of the other threads but it just turns into a 'hate' fest for the Pres. I can only remember being on the the near tears over issues or situations with Obama, (I also like him as person but not Pres) The one I remember being the most upset about was the soldiers were taken and had to 'apologize before being released. We come from a strong conservative military family so that might have been part of it I've said that before on here as my views on things. One reason I have liked Pres Trump is the 'way' he talks. He doesn't talk like a military person or a politician. I think he says some screwy things but they are so blown up the reactions are hard to take serious. I am NOT in anway saying that to anyone in particular just at the who are not Trump supporters react. I also think he says things to get the reactions. He doesn't know protocol or how certain things go but that was to be expected. I see it on my social circles. You're either with him or your not. How do you conservative peas handle it? Sometimes it's caused drastic relations in my family. I've mentioned that before I try to be rational and kind and explain. But sometimes I think it's exhausting so I don't anymore? Do you mind sharing if you've had trouble not just on here but on social media or family stuff? We get a long great with my sibling but now politics are off the table so someone doesn't die! lol! I hope i'm not rambling!! Oh ps my cousins does the one food box, it's blue.. (Can't remember the name I took my night meds lol!) they like it but she's not married. It just her and she sometimes cooks what they are for her brother or parents. She likes it.

The boxes won't be fresh food. They would NOT like Blue Apron or any of the dinner box ones where you get meal ingredients. They would be non-perishable food staples like peanut butter, pasta, canned fruits/vegetables, that sort of thing. To be clear, this plan isn't going to be implemented with the currently proposed budget or anytime soon. Right now, it's just an idea that the USDA is working on as a possibility.

lots of people live in my town with limited to no access to kitchens.. they may have a hot plate.. and live in one small room. that's what I was thinking of no storage, no kitchen, no ability to cook. what seems like a staple to some is not much of a staple to others.

I like the idea of the food box. Obviously there are lots of things to consider in the delivery method, but it’s an interesting idea for sure. My mind goes towards one option being something similar to meals on wheels. For those that don’t have the ability to cook, maybe a hot meal and sack lunch could be delivered.
The system definitely needs an overhaul. It seems like that last big change was moving to EBT cards so that people wouldn’t feel so humiliated at the check out stand. Now a lot of those cards are being sold for pennies on the dollar so that people can get their next high. Others are being stolen for the same reason. It just doesn’t seem to be the best program.
I just know that there are so many people that need help there won’t be a one size fits all answer. Whatever the reform is, it needs to have options and all of them need to be healthy options.

As a food allergy parent the food boxes would worry me. Even if they don't include a person's allergens, some of us also avoid certain brands of other foods due to possible cross contamination during production. There are foods we avoid that most people wouldn't even expect to be an issue for our allergies.

While I thinks something has to be done, I am not sure this is the right thing to do. Logistically, issues with allergies, preferences....I think there are many things that raise concern for me.
edit: While I don't think this would help everyone, I would like to see more education about growing your own veggies, etc. When I was in High School I lived in Russia as a foreign exchange student with the National FFA. Part of what I was doing over there was helping families learn how to plant their own gardens (in the ground, in containers, in community gardens, etc). I know it won't be a solution for everyone but I would like it to be an option for those who do want to grow their own food or grow their food in community gardens.

I see how that could be a benefit, but I think she would still have to go to the store since the box is only to replace some of the SNAP benefit. And with the way boxes are taken off of front porches these days I would be very concerned about theft. eta: I also think to make this really benefit people it would need to be customizable for allergies at minimum. And that feature would eat up much of the savings they are hoping to make with the program due to the additional employee cost of packaging the boxes.

Am I allowed to participate on this thread civilly?
First of all I am a born again Evangelical Christian who reads, studies and teaches the Bible. A former Republican now as of this election.
What I struggle with every day is now Evangelicals support a man like Trump. I am cool with people who voted for Trump, but I am not cool about the “defense” of Trump by Evangelicals. I am not cool with Trump is doing to this country. I spend hours reading and dissecting things.
For example, I always try and read the Republican platform. It has always supported Ukraine on the platform, then all of a sudden it was gone. It was removed during the Republican convention by Trump/Trump’s team. Why? And the lies.... even lies on things that can be checked began and have continued.
I have so much more to share and will if I am allowed.

Then I have a topic for us to think about and discuss! I got to listen to my favorite radio talker today (I mentioned him in one of my early posts, Michael Medved) and one of the subjects on his show was the part of the budget proposal that has to do with SNAP and shipping food boxes to recipients. This explains the bones of it: Harvest BoxesThat was the only media mention I could find that didn’t go off on what a bad idea it was, total shocker, I know. Most of the articles were comparing it to Blue Apron (gourmet! Expensive! Lost a lot of money when they went public!) but the proposed plan is only like Blue Apron in that it’s boxes of food being delivered. I think it sounds like a very interesting idea. I like that it uses all USA foods, that from the ones mentioned, look pretty healthy. I like that it doesn’t completely eliminate the debit cards, so recipients still have the freedom to shop for other items they need. And I like that it has the potential to cut overall costs while still providing assistance. I also think this proposed budget will not get passed, and who knows what will become of this idea, but I appreciate the out-of-the-box (!) thinking that the USDA put into this. What do you all think? I think that setting up the government to do this not cost effective. The government would have to setup warehouses/deliveries etc. Remember Katrina and how Walmart was able to get water to the affected areas faster than FEMA. I remember being a Republican meant we prefer the private sector to do things vs the government. So, why is this philosophy changing under Trump? It is more cost effective to shop at their local grocery stores. My opinion is that someone is going to benefit from some big fat contract just like Montana company that got the Puerto Rico contract to restore power lines; the contract since has been cancelled. This initial contract was disturbing to me. How could a company that small receive such a big contract? Some scripture regarding how we deal with the poor. Leviticus 19:10 And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. Deuteronomy 15:7 “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, Deuteronomy 15:9 Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin. Deuteronomy 15:11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

There seems to be, IMO at least, a misunderstanding of what this thread is about. I see this thread as a place to exchange thoughts, beliefs, ideas, etc. without being criticized, ridiculed, and belittled for having a different opinion. Not everyone is going to agree on things (how boring if we did ). It's how people talk to and treat those that disagree that has become a big problem here. My hope is if people know they'll be treated respectfully here, more will participate. Since I'm an atheist, I'm not in a position to wade into the religious questions in your post. Hopefully you'll get some that will. However, what I bolded above: I see a lot of comments similar to yours (used to be Republican but not now). I don't quite know how to word this...there are some pretty big fundamental differences between the two parties. If you don't consider yourself a Republican now, is it because your position has changed and you truly lean more left now, or is it specifically Trump's behavior? Does that make sense? I consider myself a moderate. I've voted for both parties over the years, because I'm not hard core for either party. I tend to lean towards candidates that are more in the middle. I've got a big issue with the democratic party platform right now (as I see it) and I'm already starting to dread the next presidential election, lol.

I am so glad to see some really good discussion here! This is exactly what I envisioned for this thread, so thank you to everyone who is participating and contributing ideas Like @devildog said above, despite “conservative” being in the title, anyone is welcome here. As you can see from previous posts, many here aren’t conservatives or Republicans in the strictest sense, many of us didn’t vote for Trump, but nor do we all disagree with everything he or Congress has done. 50offscrapper I hope you find your ideas and thoughts listened to and considered here. ITA that I don’t believe government is the most cost effective way to get most things done. In the case of the Harvest Box idea, it’s not creating a new government agency but rather trying to streamline the existing one in an effort to reduce costs, which is a conservative ideal (this is not to say the GOP is far more spendy than they should be!) I am not religious, but I am a believer, but I can’t really answer your question about support. I don’t, personally, have a conflict over agreeing with something like the tax reform but not liking Trump the man — is that what you mean? His great many faults haven’t caused me to abandon my core political principles.

There are foods we avoid that most people wouldn't even expect to be an issue for our allergies. I think the Harvest Box plan is only proposed for a % of SNAP users, so they could deal with things like allergies by keeping that segment of participants fully on SNAP and not the box combo. I don’t know how they would determine who is who, though, and that could prove to be a cost deal-breaker.

I asked her why she didn't supplement her food with a bag from church, and she said she didn't get to choose things she would eat. My first reaction was my father's voice in my head saying, "Beggars can't be choosers." But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be better to let people at the food pantry make requests for what they will and won't eat, rather than deciding for them.

For me, it's because I feel like the party left me. I've always identified with Republicans from the perspective of a fiscal conservatism. The way that Republicans are adding to the deficit with little or no concern about the repercussions turned me off to the party several years ago. My change has very little to do with Donald Trump's behavior (as abhorrent as I believe it is). I'm not rich or religious, so the conservative attitude toward spending was the only thread that tied me to the Republican party in the first place.
Re: food boxes - I don't have a problem with this in theory (especially if we could make an effort to get local farmers involved in providing food for the boxes - if we're subsidizing farmers with taxpayer money NOT to grow food, then we can subsidize them to grow food that will help those who need assistance). I remember my family getting food boxes from the government when I was a child (Government cheese grilled cheese was the greatest when I was 8) - I assume that program was stopped for a reason, I'd like to know more about WHY it was stopped to begin with if it's such a great concept/idea.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be better to let people at the food pantry make requests for what they will and won't eat, rather than deciding for them. We have a food "give away" at our small church. We give away food 2 Saturdays a month. We get our food by buying it from a food bank in Los Angeles. Although we "put an order in for x amount of food" sometimes we get y amount of food. We have about 100 people that come in for food. We may get 1 can of beans 300 cans of pineapple, 50 pounds (in one pound chunks) of hamburger, 22 pounds of ham. We have a committee that boxes up 110 boxes. They try their hardest to put things in evenly so everybody gets "about the same things" but as you can see, with 110 boxes, and 50 pounds of ground beef, and 22 pounds of ham, that task is very hard to do. They do their best. Some people are very ungrateful for what we do. They will shout at the volunteers--HE GOT THAT--I DIDN"T GET THAT. and other things I'd rather not say. Everybody stands in line, gets a number, and that number decides the box they get. Whatever is in it is what they get. Sometimes it's no meat. Sometimes it's no beans. Sometimes it's a can of pineapple. When they run out of numbers, the rest of the people are turned away. (which happens). Anyhow, all that to say--we do the best we can with the money we have to spend. It is one of our churches highest expenditures. We are a SMALL church--under 50 people, and chose to do this because of the extrodinary amount of homeless people we have in our community. The Lord is blessing this outreach to the community even if some of the recipients aren't happy with "what they get." And as always, it's more of a blessing to those that give than to those to those that receive. This was just an example of what they might get. The boxes are all FULL of stuff--all different things, because that is what we get to hand out.

I agree that if the memo has any possible security breeches, those need to be redacted. Whether it's Military maneuvers/plans, Cyber security information, infrastructure safety etc... Redact it, but if it's he said/she said or that a certain person did something unlawful (no matter who it is) it needs to be released. We the people, deserve to know who is truly in the wrong or who has committed a crime. I don't care which party it is. I want to know the truth. I can't make informed choices if the only thing I am hearing out of the media or from the talking heads in government is opinion. I want to see cold hard facts and see evidence of wrong doing. If there is wrong doing, those people need to be punished to whatever the extent of the law allows. Well said. I couldn't agree more.

As to the food boxes for staple items (cheese, peanut butter, non-perishables), I think it's is a good idea. From the articles I'm reading, people would still received food stamps or their equivalent in order to purchase perishable goods.
Food allergies are certainly a consideration but as far as not liking something, I doubt there will be anything exotic in these boxes and that even if someone doesn't like a particular item, someone else in their family probably will.

That's the entire point of having this thread.

I’m not sure I think it’s a good, or rather necessary idea, to investigate Porter since he’s gone and it could be a big waste of time and money. Not that I don’t think the subject of security clearances is of major importance — I do — I would rather see an overhaul of how that whole system works. Right now, when a new Admin comes in, several interim clearances are granted while the actual background checks are done. It is generally agreed across party lines that this system is slow and cumbersome. They need a more efficient, expedient way to get it done, and I’d rather see time/money go to that rather than an investigation into an individual who has been purged already. Maybe looking into Porter will help with that, though, so my mind could be changed. I also think it’s important to note that allegations aren’t enough to keep someone from having a clearance, convictions of certain things are. My personal opinion of Porter isn’t relevant to the law and rules.

My first reaction was my father's voice in my head saying, "Beggars can't be choosers." But the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would be better to let people at the food pantry make requests for what they will and won't eat, rather than deciding for them. I appreciate that. It's the reason why my gut reaction was my dad's expression. Volunteers work very hard to donate, make and distribute the food. I just wanted to contribute the idea that if the government was going to provide boxes, some consideration might be given to choice. And thank you for volunteering.

I saw a clip where Trey Gowdy has launched an investigation into Rob Porter's hiring and employment at the White House. Good! I don't know how Porter's past could be ignored and it's quite disappointing. Can I go back to Joy Behar? I just saw her latest ridiculing, this time against VP Pence. She sickens me, truly. That's what I'm hoping comes of this. From what little I know about the information coming out about Porter (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) there was a restraining order against him, I think by the first wife? I haven't heard if it was temporary while the issue went thru court, or was it permanent? What I find troubling is his lack of top security clearance while being a top aide. If the FBI closed their file, and he didn't end up with top clearance, how could he hold his position? There's a very good chance I don't know all of the details though. I've read a few articles but can't seem to find all of it.

The protective order was temporary from June 19, 2010 to June 23, 2010.
I don’t think the FBI issues clearances, just does the investigations and submits those results to the agencies that do issue the clearances.
