Doesn't the outrage ever seem contrived, though? This has been going on for years, yet now, right this moment, it's suddenly headline news. That is not true. The policy of separating parents and children who arrive at the border together is new. In the past, children who arrived the border alone were indeed housed in conditions similar to the ones in which children are housed now - THAT is not new. (I personally think those conditions were wrong under Obama and wrong now.) But the separation of parents and children IS new. From 2017: In an attempt to deter illegal immigration from Mexico, the Department of Homeland Security is considering separating children from parents caught crossing the border, Secretary John Kelly said Monday on CNN. The proposal would result in detention for the parent while any accompanying children would be placed in the care of the government or sent to live with any relatives in the United States. Currently, women and children generally are held together in one of three detention centers — two in Texas and one in Pennsylvania — for a few days or weeks before being released to wait for an immigration judge to decide their cases. www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/03/07/dhs-is-considering-separating-mothers-and-children-who-cross-the-border-illegally/?utm_term=.52c5a9fd5474This needs to be repeated - again and again. What is happening NOW is not the same as what happened under previous administrations. Yes, we have a broken immigration system - but the current administration has CHOSEN to implement a policy that leads to separating children from their parents. No matter what Secretary Nielsen said to the press this afternoon, it is a POLICY of the Trump administration, NOT a LAW, that is causing this. And asylum seekers are being turned away or treated like criminals, even though it is not illegal to seek asylum. I applaud Laura Bush and the other First Ladies who are speaking out. We need everyone who recognizes how outrageous and how damaging this is to children to speak out.

The act of separating families is meant to break spirits. If you can't hope for a better future for your children you tend to give up. This is a calculated shitty move on the part of Republicans. They want their mediocrity to reign supreme and they know migrants will shake everything up. They know the children they are imprisoning could one day vote or "steal a job" from their little school shooter. The policy isnt meant to protect any of us. Those children are going to be fucked up and will have the US to blame. We are creating enemies. Wow... your heart goes out to immigrant children, yet you have the audacity to call our children "little school shooter"? America HAS EVERY RIGHT to control its borders, but it seems to me that we're the only country that gets vilified for doing so. The illegal immigrants KNOW that they're NOT SUPPOSED to come here in the first place. They're putting their own children at risk of trafficking, the drug cartels, etc when attempting to cross the border. There's only so much we can do to protect them. If they don't like the way it's being handled, then don't come here. I'm sorry...but if this has been going on for as long as they're saying, then why all the fuss now? Liberal Propaganda Bullsh!t I don't even listen to it anymore. I think of the thousands of children in our own country who are homeless and starving. We have no business trying to care for others when we can't even take care of our own. There is no "us and them" when it comes to the welfare of children. There are only responsible adults who are honorable caretakers of those who have no voice...and those who aren't. Children should NOT be pawns in the games of their caretakers. It is immoral and not the provenance of a civilized society.

Previous administrations have allowed this to go on for decades. Unchecked and unchanged. Keeping it under the radar so they won't get blasted for it in the polls or at the voting booth.
Trump has said he'll take the heat and anger so a light can be shined on it so that Congress - the only ones who can truly fix it - will have to act.
No more kicking the can down the road for another administration to be tasked with dealing with it and failing to do so.
If you want to rail at anyone, rail at Congress - the whole damn lot of them. Demand they reach across aisles and enact comprehensive immigration reform and to STOP using it as a demographic voting tool for their own gain.

Some of you seem to forget that Obama had a hostile GOP senate and house who shut down everything he tried to do for 8 years.
Go ahead and blame Obama..I know it makes you justified.
But Obama never separated families. Kids stayed with mothers unless they arrived unaccompanied by a relative.
To keep putting your head in the sand is, well, deplorable.
And before Lauren goes batshit and on another tirade, I'm out.

This is not true. There have definitely been immigration problems for decades and no real solutions have even been attempted. But what is happening right now - intentionally separating parents and children who arrive at the border together - is new.

So please explain why John Kelly, in 2017, said that they were considering separating parents and children at the border as a deterrent. If it was already standard procedure, why would it be a deterrent and what would they be considering?

Forget the opinions by the talking heads. This is Sec. Of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen speaking on this topic. Even talking heads on the right are admitting that this is a new policy - e.g., Steve Cortes, former campaign advisor for Trump, just said so on CNN.

Not all on the right are saying the same thing. This is hearing straight from the Homeland Sec without interpretations. ETA - CNN does not speak for the more conservative people. Truly, they do not.

There have been way too many people saying this is a new policy (including Jeff Sessions and Kelly, the former DHS head) for me to believe anything Nielsen said today.

So, the leftists have a new moniker to add to their list of mantras "racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamaphobic, and now heartless".
And they wonder why we don't care what they call us because to my way of thinking, they are just plain stupid, unrealistic idealists and financial idiots. I'm proud to be called "racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamaphobic and heartless". It is us who will keep this country viable.

I am heartbroken that there are so many on this board that are actually denying, or worse, defending what is happening to the INNOCENT CHILDREN caught up in a political battle over immigration. THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. This is a NEW action. It does not matter if you are a democrat or a republican. It does not matter if you were a conservative or a liberal. It does not matter if you support President Trump or hate him. The only thing that matters is the children.
There are hundreds of children right now being kept in an abandoned Walmart behind chain-link fences sleeping on a concrete floor with only a thin mattress and a Mylar blanket for comfort. They do not understand what is happening or when they will see their families again. They do not have any toys or books. Nobody is allowed to touch, hug or comfort them. The lights are on 24 hours a day. There is also a TENT CITY near El Paso to house these children—in near 100 degree heat.
This is not fake news. This is not an exaggeration. Multiple, reputable news sources are reporting these conditions.
Please. PLEASE—even if you think the parents shoud be punished for entering the country illegally, surely you cannot believe the kids should be treated this way. They should not be punished for the actions of their parents. We can do better.
Please stop the blame game. Please stop making this political. Let’s COME TOGETHER and demand that we do better,

I'm happy to wear it. And don't think for one second you won't have to answer to some higher power. Wear it proudly now but trust and believe there is a right and a wrong to this life and you unabashedly made the choice to be a shit human being. Also it is my sincere wish that the only person available to turn your aging body be a brown person. And since the universe is in the business of humbling people let's hope your bedsores and heart size never coincide.

Several times I have listened to Attorney General Jeff Sessions specifically talk about this separation of families at the border.
Going to Google to find a video, I'm several pages back and seeing only a liberal spin to what he said, which is not what I have heard him say directly.
YouTube it is, then.
For those who want to hear our Attorney General speak about this without the political commentary.

Jeff Sessions' actions speak louder than his words. Plain and simple. They do want to seperate children from their parents. If they didn't, they wouldn't. It is that simple folks.

Let’s COME TOGETHER and demand that we do better, Katy, this is a good post. I honestly think that if the left would quit trying to make this all Trump's fault (which is absolutely is NOT) and admit that the roots of this goes back more than one administration, we could all come together to help these children. But we also have to admit that something has to be changed! We cannot just keep accepting these crowds, many of whom truly are NOT coming here legally. We all know that. But we would be heartless indeed to read your post and not want to do something. These children must be helped. But laws MUST change too. Both sides have to give on this. And quit ramping up the blame game.

I’m wondering how you would have felt in 1939, when the US turned away 900 Jewish refugees and sent them back to Europe, where more than a quarter ended up dying in death camps. There were “valid” arguments against accepting them—“We can’t help everyone....we have to take care of our own, first...they could be dangerous (spies)... But history has proven turning them away was the wrong thing to do.

(the seperation of families) So basically its both parties who want to make change, want children to not cross, and are blaming Sessions but not one of those sides is really making an effort to put in change? Because the blame game keeps circling around with the teeter totter crap? I guess Sessions is the triangle and dems and republicans are the opposite teeter totter seats?
