If Trump had truly misspoke, he could have made his correction later while speaking with his buddy Sean. It wasn't until he was told how bad it sounded (was told to go out and try to do some damage control) that he came back and changed his story.
ETA I see that I'm late to the post here.

I believe that Democrats are shocked that Republicans could vote for such a morally vacuous man.
People who overlook or excuse his overt racism, sexism, corruption, etc. and continue to defend and support him have no moral ground to stand on. There are some things in life that are way more important than a rising stock market or a few dollars more in your paycheck. I have lost respect for anyone who continues to support him knowing what kind of person and what kind of President he is. I can excuse and forgive those who voted for him but recognize that they made a mistake, but I will never be able to look at anyone who still supports him with respect. This is exactly how I feel. Thank you for saying it so eloquently.

Getting back to the talk of Trump winning a second term. I honestly think he's going to have at least one if not two primary challengers. I think both John Kasich and Marco Rubio will challenge him and I for one can't wait to see all that go down. As far as the Democrats, we need to concentrate on NOW, not two years from now. Let's not lose sight of what we need to do in November and that's turn at least the Senate blue, if not both Houses so we can render this prick a lame duck for the next two years or use him for our bidding because everybody but his base knows that until recently, he was considered an Democrat elitist Manhattanite. He doesn't care which party puts legislation in front of him, he's only worried about WINNING. I will have to look for it, but not too long ago, I came across an article that talked about how historically, when a challenger beats out the incumbent in the primaries, that challenger typically does not win the general election. Did anyone else see that? I think someone here may have posted a link to it.

Watching and reading about his correction........ In Helsinki he said WOULD forcefully. Today he stumbled over explaining WOULDN'T. I think WOULD was intentional and he was in essence forced to take it back. But he didn't take it all back. He still believes Putin's statement that he didn't do it..... dt hedged when he stated he believed the intelligence community BUT there 'could be other people also' He cannot accept that his Russian friend did it.

That seems to be all he gives a damn about. Himself and winning. and not just the election. Just him "winning" in general. at everything.

Attention Republican politicians, this is your chance to be true patriots. You should call Trump out for the treacherous liar that he is. Speak loud and clear that you don't believe his excuse today. You won't, of course, because you aren't true patriots. You are spineless, greedy bastards. You probably came to him and told him he must correct this mess or else. You don't care about this country or its citizens.

Does anyone else think about the movie that could be made of this mess (if we survive it)?
I’m picturing them walking into the room and a guy wheels in an old school tv on a stand like in high school on movie day. They seat Trump up front and center and for the whole time they are in there Putin and his buds are watching a compromising video on Trump while laughing and eating popcorn.
Then he says that unless he wants the world to see that video when he walks out the door that this is exactly what Trump will do.
In that scenario I wouldn’t want to be the American translator though because those two-bit parts don’t end well.

He is a compulsive liar who believes everything that comes out of his mouth even if it is the exact opposite of what was said just hours before. What he said at the Trumputin conference was exactly what he intended to say.

Who would play Putin? This is from a few months back, but... www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/news/a56439/donald-trump-white-house-movie-casting/

What he said at the Trumputin conference was exactly what he intended to say. I agree. It was only when he realized the s*** storm he'd created that he started to backtrack which wasn't really that effective either. What took his so long to explain it? He was probably told by others on his way back to Washington. Bet it wasn't his decision to clarify it.

Even if you believe Putin didn’t have kompromat on Trump previously, he sure as shit does now. There is no way, none, that the Russians didn’t find a way to record the 2.5 hour private conversation. They are genius at eavesdropping, and have been for a long time.
So that dumbass walk back, or attempt at one, could have just put the American President in blackmailable territory. Not to mention what else Trump said in the private meeting. The mind boggles just thinking what he may have spewed.

His walk back is pathetic. I can't believe there are people who will accept this shit. He is a horrible person and a horrible leader. it seems to me like "they" don't even necessarily believe him but will accept any bs excuse/backpedaling to keep believing in him- or what they have in common(?). He only cares about himself winning and "they" may only care about what they can "win" because of him. None of which I am interested in for multiple reasons. One being I don't agree with much of what he is pedaling and another (and more importantly) being I find him a despicable human being who is dishonest and not trustworthy at.all. So much so that if he had something "good" to offer I wouldn't trust it or accept it. If the wonderful, yuge tax breaks were real and came to me, I would gladly return it all to get him the hell out. Sincerely, a recently divorced, jobless single mom who could use every penny coming my way. But not that way.

LINKI had read the original question and answer, but am gobsmacked that the White House censored it. Though I shouldn't be. I just...surely Putin wasn't admitting to their interference? How well does he speak English, or does he?

There were at one point videos of him speaking English in promotions to get the Sochi Olympics. He couldn’t have reached the heights he did in the KGB without being fluent in English, most likely several languages.

So he knew exactly what he was saying and how it would be interpreted and the chaos that would cause. I was afraid of that, just thought he might not be so obvious with Trump standing right next to him. And again, our White House censored that in both forms.

Serious question for you, and not at all a judgement or condemnation. How do you go back to trusting the GOP after their part in all of this? Of them having the power to step in front of the Trump administration and saying "this is not okay," but NOT doing so?

How do you go back to trusting the GOP after their part in all of this? Of them having the power to step in front of the Trump administration and saying "this is not okay," but NOT doing so? My answer is: I don't know. I am really struggling. I am conflicted. I am confused. I'm looking for a hero and I'm terribly afraid none exists. I worked as a staffer in my state legislature. I firmly believe it's a role every person should have to do. When you work side by side with people from the other party, you see just how human they are. You see the staffers all having the same kinds of struggles. I have had to defend positions I don't personally agree with. I have had to work with people coming from a completely different perspective than me and I have liked many of them. I am really struggling right now because a politician I worked for for a very long time in state politics is now a congressman and I am watching...what I thought was a man of principle...a man of strong Christian faith...a man who was well known for helping create economic policy with those across the aisle...and now he is silent on Trump. It is so disappointing in a way you probably cannot imagine. I defended him. I spoke to the public on his behalf for years. Because I *believed* in him even if I didn't always agree. Where does that leave me? I'm not sure.
