I'm worried about y'all without a/c because I am afraid this summer is going to be more like a new normal and not a one time thing.

We moved to Seattle area last summer. We were in corporate housing apartment in Bellevue for 2 months without AC, I understand what you are going through. The house we bought has AC, no way was I going through that again.

Oh hunny, you’re so funny. I have 5 going. Yeah...it's kind of like living inside a hair dryer. Haha - every time I walk past one of the fans my hair goes all ways and not in a good way

PNW as well. I don't remember our summers being this hot when I was a kid. Grew up without air conditioning, and while I remember being warm, it was never outrageous. We had a heat pump put in two years ago, after years of saying, "It's only really hot a few weeks out of the year." Best money we ever spent.
Hang in there! It's usually about 10 degrees cooler at our place on Whidbey, if you are looking to get away! It's sunny and 66, according to my weather app. Maybe a nice air bnb?

Temp in my place at 10:30 last night was 84 degrees. (Seattle, no a/c) Needless to say it was a bit of a tough night. It’s cooled to 78 this morning. Weather isn’t supposed to break for another week. Somebody said last week that their cats could be chalk outlines on the floor. That exactly describes my two. Once or twice a day I’m picking them up and wrapping them in a towel drenched in cold water for a few minutes. They’re actually relaxing into it (which I never would have expected). Uncle. Uncle. Uncle. Keep cool girls! I feel your pain (Although we do have ac). Over the past 2 weeks, or temps have been 108-112. I haven't enjoyed doing anything outside. Luckily, next week we are expecting a "break" with temps in the mid 90's, with 1 chance of rain (C'mon rain!!!!!), before they start to rise for the hottest part of our summer. I hope you're able to cool off soon!

I hear ya! I'm dropping off my DS at Wild Waves (water/amusement park) right now along with the entire population of Western Washington it seems. I'm more than happy to be sitting in my a/c car waiting to get the text that he met up with his friends.
We open all our upstairs windows and put fans in them every night which usually helps keep the temp down in the morning, but when I got up, it had only gone down to 80. No wonder I couldn't sleep last night.
We were out at the coast last weekend (Kalaloch) and were complaining because it was cool, foggy, and Misty. We're just never happy. Lol

As a former Seattlite and now Texan I totally feel your pain. I read that Seattle is the least air conditioned place in the country and I believe it. We had it added to our house when we had to replace our furnace but it's just miserable when it gets above 85 there.
Now here in Dallas, we've had record heat of up to 114 over the last week but every place is air conditioned, although mine was struggling to keep up. We've had warnings from the power company to reduce electric use during peak hours and it's been pretty miserable. It looks like it's back down to the usual 90s next week.
Stay cool!

We bought some penguin A/C units a few years ago. Best thing ever! It keeps the bedroom comfortable for sleeping and the living area in the low 80s.

Oh hunny, you’re so funny. I have 5 going. Yep, funny
We have ceiling fans in just about every room and a large one on the floor for the dogs. We also have 2 window a/c units - one in our master bedroom and one near our living room. My dogs are melting too

I'd go buy a small window unit if possible... If there are any to be found! They don't last long in a heat wave here.

Maybe y'all can save some money and buy window units/portable a/c in the off season so you have them for next summer. And encourage any elderly/infirm you know to do the same. This is scary.

Honestly I would move to a place that has AC or where I can at least have a window AC unit ,Climate change is real and that’s not going to get better for a long time if we don’t make drastic changes I was listening to NPR in the car today and they were talking about Burlington, Vermont used to have 10 days a year that where they pass 90° now it’s 40 days a years .

My parents (mom/stepdad and dad) all have at least one window unit in their houses We will never be without at least one window unit, we've actually talked about buying a third for just in case

Just a little after 9:30am at my house and the inside temp is already 75. :-( I read somewhere that you could tell how hot it was outside by the length of a cat! We like to say that cats melt at 90 degrees. My cats love the heat -- they beg to go out on the screen porch and melt when the AC is on inside. They don't have all that much fur, though.

Worst case scenario? You have one you can loan out if you don't need it, but someone who has nothing does.

For those who suggest a portable ac unit. Below are the windows in my living room. I live in a registered historic building (was converted to living spaces in 1986) built in 1908, my wing added in 1955. There is no changing the windows :/ Heat is electric in the wall, so no options to add built in AC. I am going to look into possibly doing something upstairs in the bedroom and/or office. Question, is a ceiling fan any more effective than a good floor or box fan? Ceiling height upstairs is 9' (downstairs is 12.5). Or is the draw simply not having to fuss around with a regular fan? http://instagram.com/p/BlI3MyanhJv

The news was showing the 5 longest streaks of 90+ degrees in history. All five were in the 2000's. Climate change is real, for sure. I love my building. My unit is a unicorn condo. After moving a lot in the 5.5 years since my ex and I split, I swore this is the last move until stairs get to be too much for me. Am I rethinking that stance? ummmm. Yeah

You have an amazing view, just beautiful. But I couldn't live like that. Are there no portable a/c units that don't require venting from outside? If finding a place with a/c is going to be really hard anyway I'd definitely exhaust that possibility before I moved.

I agree that climate change is real and there are going to be more hot days and also that it's miserable when it's this hot. But let's level-set reality. Seattle is cooler than Portland and Portland only averages 12 days 90 or above each year. It's not like parts of the country where these hot temperatures go on for months at a time. Giving up a dream place for a few days of discomfort seems kind of excessive.
