Update #2 11:30 PM ET: Thank you for all of your love and concern. I really appreciate your words of encouragement. I slept most of the day. I talked to my BFF on the phone tonight. I think I'm just about out of tears and I've worn myself out. Tomorrow I'm going to call HR and ask if there is something lacking in my paperwork so that I can get it corrected if that is the problem. I'm also going to apply to be a sub. I'm not giving up... I'm so happy to see this! I've been worried all night and came here to check on you as soon as I got on my computer this morning. Hang in there! Sending you all the good job juju!!

I’m glad you’re not going to give up. The perfect job is out there waiting for you, hopefully you’ll find it soon. I’m not a teacher, but maybe subbing first will give you a better, firsthand idea of where you might actually LIKE to work best and give you exposure to the other people you could be working with at the various schools. Good luck, keeping my fingers crossed for you!

I'm glad you're not going to give up. A position is out there for you. It's just taking its own sweet time showing itself. You'll find it. As awesome as it would be to have these weeks leading up to school to get ready, remember that there are a lot of last minute hires right as the school year starts and the need for additional teachers shows with late registrations. Our elementary added four teachers - two K, one 3rd and one 5th - the week before school started because of new registrations shifting numbers just enough to need additional sections. Our poor principal was interviewing like a mad woman to get those spots filled in time for the first day and put out a call to the PTO to get extra hands in to help the teachers get their rooms together. Hang in there. It will happen.

Saying this gently. I have been teaching for the past three years. Prior to that, it took 2 years to find a job. 7-8 interviews a summer, many leads, and they were all dead ends. This summer I was led to believe (just like you) I had a new position.
I get the disappointment. It's exhausting being "on" and preparing, practicing, repeatedly, etc.
However, the wishing to be dead, drugs and alcohol concern me.
Interviewing is stressful. They job is 10x more stressful. I think you need to focus on your health before looking further.
Hoping you find the perfect situation soon.
I think you know by now that finding and getting a teaching job in some places is easy-as-pie, and in others not so easy. I am saying this so so SO gently, like teach4u - these are normal stumbling blocks that most of us go through. I hope that interviewing and waiting for a job offer is your bad place because then this is the worst it will be. I hope it's not whenever you hit stumbling blocks because I cannot imagine how difficult it would be a teacher day in and day out. Send hugs and good vibes for the perfect job for you.

I was a teacher, and my DH and I moved a lot, so I was job hunting quite a bit in my younger days. As the summer went on, I would get frantic and usually took the first job I was offered because I was so worried nothing was turning up.
EVERY SINGLE TIME I would get a call the week before school started offering me my perfect job. Every time. One year, it was the day before school started. It just killed me when I settled for a lesser job and a better one was there.
It will all work out. Trust me. One thing I learned is that a lot of maternity leave teachers who decide not to return to teaching after their leave wait until the last minute to notify the school, so that their health benefits last longer. Not sure if that’s still true, but there will be last minute jobs. It won’t be easy for you to prepare, but you can do it!

I got my first teaching job on August 21. School started on the 23rd.
In the many years since then I’ve seen several teachers hired at the last minute, even after the last minute/day/week.
Also, money might be the problem. Districts like experience, of course, but they also like the number that’s listed on the salary schedule for “Year 1 with Bachelors Degree.” I know teachers, during hard years to get hired, who have, unfortunately, voluntarily negotiated themselves fewer years and less educational credit.
Good luck!

Hiring really is a process, unfortunately it's not easy on the nerves of the prospective hiree! So many things can be at play that one person that needs to prove something can be on vacation something else comes up that's urgent and to add to what the others have said there are so many times when I have seen hires take place just a day or two before the start of school don't get discouraged! You have made so many changes lately it's probably a little overwhelming but in the end it's all going to be to the good! Hang in there!

I taught for 10 years before I quit to be a SAHM. My youngest is in 7th grade now. There are times, like back to school time, that I miss having my own classroom. I loved setting it up each August. I also loved lesson planning. However, with the politics around state testing, I don't want to get back in full time at this moment. I've been subbing for a few years now. It's a great fit for me for now because at the end of the day, I just walk away, no lugging home hours of grading and other work. The district I work in has 11 buildings. I have subbed in all, but there is 1 school that keeps me busy enough that I pretty much stay there. I can work when I want and take the day off if one of my kids is sick, my parents need me or I just need a day at home to get housework under control. It's the best of both worlds for me at this time. If that's what you end up having to do, look at the positives in it. Plus, it'll get you around to many buildings where you can talk to the principals and let them know you're looking.

Good luck! Totally can relate. People get hired after school starts beaus class sizes are too large. Principals often go with a second choice that they don't have to reinterview. Hope that is your case too.

cindytred Thinking about you and hoping things are well! Hey! Thanks for caring and for the well wishes!
The job search continues. I just got home from 2 interviews today.
One was at a school 15 minutes down the street and it was lovely with sweet friendly people.
The other was on the other side of Houston and the principal was an arrogant jerk. He wants me to create a 45 minute first grade reading lesson and come back next week and teach it to a group of teachers. I'm seriously thinking about declining that opportunity. I know I really NEED a job - but I'm not sure I'd be happy driving across Houston in traffic to work for a jacka$$ everyday. What do ya'll think?

Holy Moses slow down! No way are you a waste of oxygen! And don't feel bad, I haven't even gotten an interview yet since moving. It's frustrating, especially when I hear all about the nursing shortage and I know I'm well qualified.
But I don't feel stupid and neither should you!

I believe it’s with the fact that he was a jerk. Personally, I think you should go. If nothing else, for experience in the interview process. If you get the job and the commute is too much, you can keep looking.

what part of houston are you in? are you permanent there, or can you relocate if you want to? I live in an apartment in Sienna Plantation. I'm semi permanent because I have a lease until July 1st next year. I like living here because I feel safe and my dad and brother are 10 minutes down the road. Most of the schools I've interviewed at are in sketchy neighborhoods. I'm desperate and will do just about anything for a job - but I want to feel safe too. Cindy

I’m glad you’re hanging in there and continuing to interview.
I want to say don’t work for an arrogant principal but I also agree that the practice will be good. You may also find that you get along well with the group of teachers you present the lesson to. I say do it.
Good luck!
