I would not go all crazy about pre-mixing it, however I did get a Penzey's free cinnamon kit with one of the jars being cinnamon sugar, so I'm all set to be proper for some time.

If you add them separately, does the cinnamon get powdery or does it mix with the sugar anyway when you toast it? If the latter, it doesn’t matter. I’ve always done it mixed together first.

I don’t make cinnamon toast all that often, but have found the Pioneer Woman’s version to be really good. You don’t have to buy pre-mixed cinnamon and sugar from the store, but you do mix it together first- right in with lots of softened butter- before you slather it all over the bread and then bake it in the oven. When I first saw her recipe, I thought, it’s just toast, how much different can it be?? But wow is it ever delicious the way she does it! I should probably make it more often, lol!

I usually premix it as needed. But I am not militant about it, it's my preference If I am making it I premix a batch in a bowl or mug. The kids love cinnamon toast and will use it up in a matter of days. If they are making it and there is none made up, they sprinkle separately.

IF I were to premix it i’d premix the sugar cinnamon and butter. But when I was a little girl it came premixed in a little plastic shaker shaped like a man in some sort of uniform I thought was the mail man. The jar was yellow plastic and had a red cap.
I haven’t premixed it for toast in forever but I do ore mix it for home made cinnamon buns

I have an old butter dish that holds the cinnamon/sugar mixed. It makes it easier etc. to have it premixed.
I have added them separately, but prefer the premixed.
I would never/have never purchased it premixed. gee whiz, I CAN mix my own!

I have mine in a jar premixed, but I also am good with whatever floats your boat, Francis.
Now if I was making it for someone and they complained. They could figure out how to get the mixture our of their hair.

We always mixed the sugar, cinnamon AND the butter together and spread it on before we broiled the toast. I haven't made it in years though. For full disclosure, I can't remember the last time I had cinnamon toast and I'm not sure my kids have ever had it, but I would absolutely mix the sugar & cinnamon with the butter before spreading it on the toast. Same way I make garlic toast.

I’m in the ‘mix it first, you heathen’ camp! I always have some premixed on hand in a Tupperware spice container with big sprinkling holes that works perfect for the task. If the cinnamon is mixed with the sugar beforehand, there are no big clumps of cinnamon and it clings to the grains of sugar so the ratio of cinnamon to sugar is just right. I agree completely with the other posters who have said that there’s no way to get the cinnamon to sprinkle out evenly by itself otherwise. And FWIW, I also keep a big tub of vanilla sugar on hand for when I make Starlight Sugar Crisp cookies. The only way to do that really right is to infuse the sugar with several whole vanilla beans in a tub, and shake it periodically over the course of several weeks or months so the sugar takes on the flavor from the vanilla beans. As the sugar gets used, I add more plain sugar, mix it up, and every so often throw another vanilla bean or two into the container. The recipe says you can just mix liquid vanilla extract with plain sugar, but honestly it never tastes the same to me. I bet Vanilla Sugar toast is amazing too, I never thought to try it but maybe now I will!

The key is to add a lot of butter to the bread. Lots of butter is not even negotiable! I've never eaten this in my life! Is it good? lol It's always been a bit of a comfort food for my family. Sometimes with tea for someone who is sick. I made it for my mama this morning as she said she was feeling "peckish" - which is a whole 'nother post. Lol. I used Penzey's! It's the only way for it to be properly melged. I had to look that one up as I'm always intrigued by learning new words. It's actually in the urban dictionary and totally fits this conversation. Bonus points awarded to PolarGreen12! Every time I read your title, it makes me chuckle. It occurred to me that the title was a bit of a pun! And I knew this would be one of those perfect crazy topics that could easily go multiple pages. One of the many reasons I love this place!

I don't think it matters. I got a free jar of cinnamon sugar from Penzeys and I refill it when it's empty. I refill it using the cinnamon I get from Penzeys with sugar from my cabinet. I'm not fancy enough to need Penzeys to continue to mix it for me.

Put the cinnamon sugar butter mixture on, then broil? Well, it's MY thread so you'll have to use MY recipe. Haha. I butter the bread liberally. I use stick butter which doesn't spread easily so it ends up making these pools of butter which are great! Then I scatter sugar over the top by scattering it out of a spoon. Then I shake the cinnamon out of the bottle on in a separate step. Place it under the broiler and watch closely for that perfect sweet spot where the sugar has melted and then sort of 'toasts' so when you eat the finished product it has this satisfying crispness to the top and a wonderful buttery sogginess to the bottom. Doesn't that sound great?!?

Always pre-mix before you put it on the toast, otherwise you risk getting a bite of too much cinnamon and not enough sugar. I am picky on my cinnamon, as well as the sugar/cinnamon ratio, so I make my own. Enough sugar to fill my sugar shaker + 2 Tablespoons of Vietnamese Cinnamon is the perfect balance for me. If I don't have bread, or want a change, then I butter a flour tortilla, nuke it a few seconds, then sprinkle on the cinnamon sugar (liberally!). Roll it up and it makes a nice sweet snack!

Well, I am hardly an expert since I just had my first piece of cinnamon toast this past week and I'm over 50. A long way over 50. However - I was told you must premix it for a proper distribution. Otherwise, it just is not right.

We always kept a shaker of cinnamon and sugar mixed. But then one time Penzey's sent me one for free, then I saw a domino's brand cinnamon sugar at the store so I tried that. I can't tell the difference between my mix and the bought mixes.
eta: we toast the bread, apply the butter, then sprinkle on the cinnamon/sugar mix.

I have 2 bottles of cinnamon. When one of them gets half way, I fill it with sugar and then dump and mix, put back into the bottle. I guess my girls never realized I did that. So I have been questions by both of them on what do I do to my cinnamon. Haha, first I told them mom secrets and they both sat me down on Christmas eve and asked me "no, mom seriously what do you do to the cinnamon?" I just wanted to add that this is genius for those who don’t have a dedicated Tupperware cinnamon sugar shaker.

While bread is toasting, mix some cinnamon and sugar. When toast pops up, scrape thin ribbons of butter from tub and place on toast. Wait a couple of seconds and spread butter. Sprinkle with an extra generous helping of cinnamon sugar mix because you have made more than enough. DO NOT CUT. Eat crusts first. Then enjoy melty yummy toast centers.

If the end product tastes like it should then it doesn't matter . I have bought it mixed a time or two and feel guilty about buying something that is far too easy to make on my own at home. I keep a small tupperware bowl mixed in the cabinet. Some butter company came out with containers of it all mixed in and we tried that - not bad. I still prefer the old fashioned form of sugar and cinnamon though.
