After reading this thread on Reddit, I thought I'd ask the peas. So what do you spend a little extra on and feel like it is really worth it. I buy foundation and facial cleaning products that cost a little more. I don't know if they make me look any better but I feel better about how I look. A couple of years ago I bought a bed pillow that cost almost $100. I cringed but it has help my allergies and my snoring problem -- so worth it! I switched to drinking rice milk and now my gut doesn't hurt all the time. Really worth it. Shoes. I broke my leg years ago and after it was healed I had foot pain unless I wore quality shoes. Every time I put on shoes from Payless/Walmart, etc. I wound up literally crying over how bad my feet hurt. I don't have that kind of pain any more but I still can't make myself go back to cheap shoes because the more expensive ones just feel so much better!

Clinique cosmetics, because I have allergies to almost everything else.
I also spend more on clothes from Talbot's, but in the end, it's cheaper. They last for years.

Nice cosmetics.
I buy at Ulta and don't bat an eye at the price bc I know I can take then home, try them out for an extended period of time, and still return them if they don't work for me. It's completely risk free buying.

Food. We buy almost all of our food from local farms that use organic/sustainable farming practices. It would be a lot cheaper to buy conventionally raised produce and meat from the grocery store, but for health, environmental and animal welfare reasons, we choose not to. We would economize pretty much everywhere else in our lives before we'd give up the kind of food we prefer.

Coffee. I have a fancy espresso machine and the cheap stuff really tastes bad when I use it. DH understands and gives really good coffee or gift cards for those stores as gifts for holidays, etc.
Garden seeds. I put too much time and effort into seed starting to mess with seeds that haven't been stored properly, don't have a germination rating, or might not be true. Since I tend to grow heirloom varieties, I save seed each year and only have to buy more if I want to try a new variety.
Shoes. I can't wear anything with a closed back that might touch the back of my heel. The area where the tendon attached to the bone is chronically inflamed on both feet, so I can't stand even a raised edge along the back of the shoe. Zappos has become my go to source for shoes. They cost more there, but I can try several at a time and wear them, with socks, on the carpet for a while to make sure nothing rubs my heel.

We discovered that your truly do get what you pay for in most cases. We found it's better to spend a little more upfront than buying something cheaper that doesn't last as long or just doesn't work as well. We don't live an extravagant lifestyle by any means but we do buy the best that we can afford.
We buy a lot of our food from local sources where possible, especially meats. I stock-up over the summer at the local markets when I can easily find organic beef and port and freeze it. Or we do drive a bit of a distance to a really good butcher shop to buy meats and sausages. So I would say this is the one area where we really do spend more money on to make sure the quality is really good.

my dogs eat and play better than I do! cosmetics and face products, I never bring my husband to Sephora with me or he would die Ive recently been spending more on jewelry, nice stuff that will last forever rather than a ton of cheap accessories.

I spend money on getting my hair professionally colored and cut every six weeks by a color specialist.
I have premium channels on FIOS because I love HBO
I also have my first Coach purse which I have carried every day for almost a year and it looks great, so I will invest in truly nice purses in the future.

Honestly, the one that I think of all the time when stuff like this comes up is shredded cheese!
We were not well off when I was a kid, my mom was a SAHM with four kids, and it was drilled into me that you bought cheese and shredded it yourself because it's a rip off to pay the manufacturer to do it for you.
I tried keeping up with that for as long as I could, but now I'm a working professional with two kids in a multitude of activities, and there are just not enough hours in the day. I would rather pay someone to shred my cheese for me now than to take the extra time to do it myself.

Shoes. They always fit. Kitchen gadgets. And my family. I have a hard time living as a single girl with disposable income when people I love are living a more simplistic life. If I buy a nice pair of boots one of my three sisters also gets a pair.

Healthier food choices. We buy meat from local sources and freeze it. I also spend a bit on fruits and veggies.
Fluffy towels. After years of using cheaper, rougher ones, I decided to splurge and purchase some soft, thick towels at Kohl's. Love them!

Butter. Real butter. Only. Sheets. I forgot we only buy real butter also. I don't eat much but it is there if I want to eat it. We started buying real butter when I was reading a book about nutrition and it said that margarine is only one molecule away from plastic. That just didn't sound healthy to me.

We get most of our meat from a local butcher. We also splurge on our animals.

Make-up for sure. I may try other things once in a while, but I always come back to Clinique & Bare Minerals. I would rather pay someone to shred my cheese for me now than to take the extra time to do it myself. I find when I do it at home, it isn't as easy to 'sprinkle'. I've tried throwing a little cornstarch in, but that seems to effect the melting. I try to get the huge bags, divide them up & freeze them to cut down on costs, but that is definitely one area that I will spend the extra money on. Like a pp said, I find w/a lot of things, you get what you pay for. Those llBean backpacks cost me a fortune, but last f o r e v e r, so it was money well spent. I don't like the idea of everyone having access to me 24/7, so I don't like giving out my cell [HASH]. We still have a landline, so you could say I spend extra money on that, lol.

Good coffee for home, Starbucks for latte's
I was gonna' say Bare Minerals makeup but while more expensive up front, it lasts a lot longer and I use less - so it's probably the same overall cost.

FYI...the shredded cheese that you buy in the store is coated in something (flour, cornstarch or something like that) to keep the shredded cheese from sticking together in the package. I would much rather shred the cheese myself and avoid the other stuff.

We pay quite a pretty penny for dog food - there's more natural stuff in their diet then in mine...
We also went with a local organic vegetable delivery service a few months ago. It's a little bit pricier, but we are throwing out a heck of a lot less then we used to!

I would rather pay someone to shred my cheese for me now than to take the extra time to do it myself. My mother was the same way! And when I first got married I shredded my own cheese, probably for a couple of years. Then I had my first kid. And even though our income dropped since I quit working to stay home with ds I discovered already-shredded cheese and never looked back. lol Also in the food category I buy baby carrots instead of peeling and cutting up big ones (which we always did when I was a kid). I buy celery hearts instead of the regular bunch of celery. I buy ready-made frozen burgers instead of making my own from ground beef. Etc. lol. For non-food, my answer would have to be shoes. I have a difficult foot (larger size, wide) and plantar fasciitis, so I'm not even sure I'd say I spend "extra" money on shoes. I'm buying good-quality shoes because I have to in order not to be miserable every day. Plus, then last so much longer than cheaper ones so it's worth it. My total splurge is pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks now that it's pumpkin season. And soon it will be peppermint mocha. I limit that to one a week.
