We get most of our meat from a local butcher. We also splurge on our animals. Isn't going to the butcher splurging on your animals?

Treats for our dogs and for all of the wild animals that we feed...deer, squirrels, ducks, groundhogs, racoons, birds and a stray cat that comes every night with the racoons.

Honestly, the one that I think of all the time when stuff like this comes up is shredded cheese! We were not well off when I was a kid, my mom was a SAHM with four kids, and it was drilled into me that you bought cheese and shredded it yourself because it's a rip off to pay the manufacturer to do it for you. FYI...the shredded cheese that you buy in the store is coated in something (flour, cornstarch or something like that) to keep the shredded cheese from sticking together in the package. I would much rather shred the cheese myself and avoid the other stuff. It's cellulose. That's wood pulp.

Clothes. I was tall as a child and my mother made my clothes because "nothing from the store fits her" so I grew up with a great fear of not having clothing in case the family income got worse than it already was. I actually had my first dress from a store at 12. So I spend way more on clothing than I need to.
And my hobbies. Right now it's glass and I probably average a hundred a month on it.

Shoes. They always fit. Kitchen gadgets. And my family. I have a hard time living as a single girl with disposable income when people I love are living a more simplistic life. If I buy a nice pair of boots one of my three sisters also gets a pair. So sweet!! To answer the OP, I take this approach to most things I buy. Shrug. I spent so many years of my life in poverty that I refuse to skimp on stuff. That doesn't mean I'm above hitting Marshall's to see whether I find good brands on sale, or that I don't wait for sales. But, I'd rather spend more money on 1 pair of shoes than buy 10 pairs of shoes, for example. Having said that, my little personal obssessions are shoes and clothing. Especially nowadays that I can fit into smaller sized items. But shoes, I don't blink if I have to spend $$$ on them.

Fabric. I'm a fabric and thread snob. I spend enough time and energy on a project that I really don't like working with cheap materials.
That said, I have made quilts with donated/old/low quality fabrics, and they turn out to be very pretty and perfectly usable, and the vast majority of people can see absolutely no difference in the end product. It's just that for me as the maker, I enjoy working with high end, really nice finishes and designs, and with thin, super strong threads that make the stitching a dream and not a nightmare. So it really is an indulgence primarily to me.

I just looked at my package of shredded cheese and besides the usual cheese stuff -- "pasteurized milk" and "salt" and "enzymes" there's "potato starch and calcium sulfate added to prevent caking." No wood pulp to be seen. Calcium sulfate is in many things that we eat, so I guess if I was going to avoid that I'd have to avoid all sorts of commercial baked goods. Totally worth it to me to avoid having to grate it myself.

I buy organic eggs. I don't buy all organic foods, but I think it's really cruel to raise chickens in tiny cages w/ no opportunity to go outside. It seems very unnatural and I can't help but think the organic eggs are healthier. Eggs are such a cheap source of protein anyway, I don't mind paying more for organic eggs.

Calcium sulfate is even used in the making of some tofu...as a COAGULANT. But in processed cheese it's used for the opposite! Crazy.

I pay to have my hair washed and blown dry (I would do it a couple of times a week if I had the extra funds) about twice a month. Such a luxury.
I also buy organic milk despite it being twice as expensive as gasoline.
I also splurge on my espresso- Nespresso only, TYVM. I love it so much I bought a second machine for work, even though I only have one at work a day. I make them for friends as well...

A lot. Too much to list. Everything from internet to face creams. I don't spend a lot on shoes or clothes. But do on purses and wallets. I do my own hair colouring because it ends up costing $300 at the salon. I like good champagne but will drink $10 bottles of wine.

Not meaning to belabor this point too much, but do you realize that cheese makers (real ones) add enzymes during the cheese-making process?

I'm right there with you. We cannot use our cell phones at home with any regularity, so the landline isn't really extra for us, but I totally agree with your reason.

Defnitely our food choices. We eat organic and gluten free. Gluten free for me because I'm allergic, but now my daughters prefer the gluten free foods.
I will spend the extra to color my hair once I have enough white to color. The natural white/grey look is not for me.

We search for food that is non-GMO, no chemicals, no additives or preservatives. And we buy our cats the same thing, we only buy better quality pet food.

I love shredded cheese but hate the texture of the preshredded stuff so I usually shred a big bowl full and put it in the fridge that way I have the good fresh cheese and it is shredded for the week. My daughter will help me keep a big bowl of it in the fridge. She loves shredding it. learned how to shred it when she was three sitting on the counter helping my husband cook dinner.
This past 16 months all our money has gone to furniture and the hot tub. We decided if we were going to live in a nice house we were going to have nice comfortable furniture.
Name brand foods instead of generic brands. There are some food we do buy the generic brand but if we specifically like a brand then we buy that brand... Like mayo.. has to be best foods. green beans has to be del monte.
I think we buy electronics when we want and we usually go for the best we can get with the money we have to spend. We would rather pay a little more and get something that will last longer and work better than get the least expensive.
And our dogs. they eat the best foods, they get the best vet care. I have spent thousands on Gadget going to the vet. but when ever they need to go they go. They actually get better care then we do.... At least when I hurt or am sick I know how I feel and can usually tell if I need to go to the doctor or if I can medicate at home. With the dogs I have no idea if it is something to worry about or if it is minor. I rather be safe than sorry with them. Like Gadgets ears, They have issues with getting infected. so when they start smelling or he starts scratching at them more than normal I take him in. 8 out of 10 times he does have an infection going. usually minor but we get medication and that way we get it early and he heals faster. But that also means we are at the vet every 2 or 3 months getting his ears looked at.
And them 3 dogs have more beds than all three of us put together. They have beds in every room and even have beds outside.
