I thought of one thing I miss about PA, and that's the lemon wedge that accompanied every soft drink I ever ordered (fast food not counted). I miss that lemon wedge in my water and tea. Not so much in my diet Coke, but still. I bet half the lemon imports into this country are for adding to soft drinks in the mid Atlantic region. Have you found any good camping spots for the summer in your new state? DH and I are thinking of heading up to either Jim Thorp which isn't far from us to camp this summer or the Poconos. Yes! The Chattahoochee Forest is close, plus lots of other places, and I've done some glamping already in a tree house and a yurt and a fancy bell tent. We didn't bring our tent with us when we moved because it sprung a leak on our last camping trip in the Poconos. Hence the glamping, rented. During this winter we haven't camped but have been out discovering various waterfalls. It's great to get out hiking all year long, I have to say. Enjoy Jim Thorpe, we went camping there and I really enjoyed the town. We did the train ride too. It was pretty much the hottest day of the year the day of the train ride. About 100 degrees and humid. I'm glistening in every photo, a fine sheen of sweat on every surface. There was a really cold creek by our tent and I got in it regularly to cool off.

I don't know about the Blue Bell Ice cream or Whataburger, but the rest you "can" get in the north, but you will have to look for it to find the good stuff. I can't answer your question because I live in the North, but I have heard people who have moved from MN miss wild rice and walleye. It's never as good as back home IMO. I suppose sometimes, with fish, it is freshness, but often, I think it is the atmosphere/comfort of home. I have had amazing food, here in MN, from various regions that rival what I have had in those actual locations when I have traveled (especially if the person making the food is from that region), but it will always lack a certain "feel" that can't be recreated from eating the food in the actual region/location. Saying you can't get good BBQ in Minnesota is like saying you can't get good a good Juicy Lucy/cheese curds in Texas or good sushi or pizza anywhere in the United States. Obviously, you can and it is out there, but it maybe doesn't feel the same as eating fresh Sushi in Japan or having a pizza on an Italian street.

I am a northern woman. Montana, North Dakota, then Minnesota. But when I travel to a southern state I HAVE to stop at the first Waffle House I see! Its just fun and unique. What types of "northern" places do you like to go to when you travel to our neck of the woods. I realize its a huge country and im being simplistic when I refer to the South and the North. Whether I'm in the north or in the south, I develop a craving for food from the other area. When I go north, it's to the Philly area and I begin devouring cheesesteaks, hoagies, Pork Roll, and other local food including excellent Italian and seafood. When I'm in Texas, it's the Cajun, Mexican (TexMex), Vietnamese, fried catfish and BBQ I can't wait to get have. And Shiner Boch beer! Oh please other states, please start serving Shiner Boch in your restaurants!

As a southern girl who has only been to Waffle House once, what am I missing? What makes it any different than say a Denny’s or IHOP? I don't like IHOP. Denny's is ok. One thing I've noticed is that I've never had bad service at a Waffle House, despite what you may hear. It's a little rough around the edges. Working man's place. Delicious waffles, eggs, bacon, hash browns. Not for fancified folk who want fresh fruit and French roast for breakfast, like my mom. Lol

Lol LOL, well I like both fancified food and delicious diner food. The food was okay, the service was okay when we went. Nothing to either write home or complain about. I was wondering if maybe they had a signature dish (besides waffles) I was supposed to have.

I am a west coast gal, but when I saw a Waffle House I got a little excited. Lol! But, we didn’t have time to stop at one so I never tried it out. When I saw White Castle in Las Vegas that was another must try. I was very disappointed. Lol! Well, to be fair, White Castle isn't expected to be good. It's what you get late at night when alcohol may be a factor - kind of like taco bell. The onion chips from White Castle are good though.

Anyway, it is a cheese stuffed burger: Juicy Lucy Link to video/article

When we go towards the south, Chick Fil A is a must. It is starting to creep into our area, but isn't quite there yet. We used to go to Sonic for the drinks when we went south, because God knows the food is nothing to write home about, but we have Sonic here now. I have never eaten at a Waffle House- I always think they look a little dirty and run down.
From the West, I would want to try In and Out From the South, I have had Whataburger in Texas, but it's been a very, very long time - like over 30 years!

I definitely miss Waffle House after living in Atlanta, and many of the restaurants there. There was place that was famous for it's Brunswick Stew, but I can't remember the name. I also loved The Varsity. We have no Sonic anywhere near here in New England, so when I went down to North Carolina, I had to stop in for a drink and loved it.

As a southern girl who has only been to Waffle House once, what am I missing? What makes it any different than say a Denny’s or IHOP? the show you get!! There is always some sort of "entertainment" behind the counter going on. Maybe it is just the ones we frequent but I have never been to one that didn't have some sort of drama going on behind the scenes. Didn't affect the food but made for fun eating.

I'm just speaking from my experience and places I've lived compared to the South..what maybe good for you may not be for me. As for pizza (which I don't care for) everyone always tells me the best pizza is in NYC so I feel this urge to try it..same with bagels in NYC.

I'm from New York, and moved to FL in 2011 (feels like a lifetime!). When I go back home, I indulge on everything since I can't find decent food in FL. I have REAL NY bagels, egg sandwiches, NY pizza *authentic*, great Hunan food, great Mexican food......... great steak..... everything!!! My family usually cooks a lot so I get to enjoy all of their cooking too. I cook here daily, but the ingredients make every dish here taste entirely different (the produce is different, as is most of everything here).
I wouldn't mind being up north in a blizzard vs. being here in the 'sun' and 'warmth'. I belong there!!! I'm trying to think of 1 thing I'd have in FL if I ever moved away and came back to visit. Maybe a Publix sub. There's not much more........ Ooh, strawberries when they're in season are excellent. That's about it!

If you ever travel through Michigan, you may want to try a Coney dog (only Jackson) copy cats are always a form of chili. Chili does not equal Coney. In Lansing, Big John's Steak and Onion. It is a local chain with wonderful subs. My DD has worked at one for almost three years. Up north, Leelanau coffee. Banana bread is the best. In the UP go for a beef pasty, if you like pot pie, the pasty puts it to shame. Mackinaw Island, fudge and saltwater taffy.

I've got nothing.
BUT- I thought Krystal and White Castle were the same thing with a different name.
I also thought the big complaint with tea outside of the South was that it doesn't come pre-sweetened. I drink mine unsweet, but the taste is also usually not quite right other places.
As a southern girl who has only been to Waffle House once, what am I missing? What makes it any different than say a Denny’s or IHOP?
Totally different - it is more like an old diner with the tables set around the kitchen. The food seems reminiscent of a foregone time as well. The hashbrowns smothered, covered, etc., etc. are comfort food for me, even if they use processed cheese slices with a slightly metallic taste.
iHops around here are more of a standard chain restaurant like Applebees or Ruby Tuesdays now. Newer Denny's are similar, though the really old ones have a different feel.
Oh - and both Krystal and Waffle House are late night places - maybe after an away football game or when you've partied a little too long (I don't do that much these days). In the same spirit, many of us learned in college that Krystal burgers will stick to any surface.

We live in the midwest. In years past, we were always excited to be in the southern States where we could get Chick-fil-A. We were also excited to try Sonic when we were in TN.
Now we have both of those places. I think we've been to Sonic once in ten years? Chick-fil-A a little more often, but still not much.
We do like Waffle House. Something about the hash brown, sausage, egg, and cheese bowl is just so good. We don't have any around where we live now, but there are a few in Indianapolis, where my dd goes to school. We make a point of stopping there when we are in the area.
I also love some Skyline chili. My whole family are big fans. I went to college near Cincinnati, which probably explains it. We don't have it here, but there's one near where I grew up in Cleveland, and one in Indianapolis, too. Last year when we were driving home from Atlanta, we sought out one in Louisville just to make the trip more interesting and give us something to look forward to.

I'm a Minnesota girl, but live in northern Virginia. When we go home, we always stop at the Cheese Chalet at the DeForest exit when driving through Wisconsin. They make their own cheese curds on site and have a nice place to let the dog out to sniff. There's quite a few places in Utah that have the same thing. That's where we buy our cheese. Much cheaper than the grocery store. We call it squeaky cheese.
All I can think of statewide that is different is fry sauce. No two are alike at any restaurant. It's a big state and there are a lot of local owned restaurants that have their own unique thing.
