I haven’t read the thread yet and I’m not in the South. (Yes, that’s all very helpful, I know.) But I just wanted to say, I’m in California and whenever I hit anywhere near the Midwest, I am all over Culver’s. OMG! Why do we NOT have Culver’s here? Well, I guess I should be grateful. Also cheese curds. I miss cheese curds. Can you not get cheese curds? We have cheese curds in a lot of different places. Do you have A & W? They sell cheese curds I also said I loved cheese curds in Wisconsin. Had them in a bar in Madison before the Wisconsin Nebraska game lol. With my 18 year old! I've never seen them anyone else -- and I'm not sure if there is any A&W in CA??

My friend has one near her in Idaho. I think they just hate California. (for God’s sake, no one tell me they’re Trump supporters and ruin my crush)

When I go back to NJ, the must haves are: pizza, Italian hot dog, bagels, and a local place called white diamond. A step above (very small step, mind you) from White Castle, but a diner/ish hamburger place. And anything Italian.
Love where I am, and the food, but some things are just not the same

Lack of ice is not the norm. Don't know where you are but in my experience living in New England, they tend to ascribe to the European paltry ice cube philosophy. I've never been to most of New England. I've lived in IL, IA, and PA and they are all free with the ice, generally speaking. I visited CT once and received the usual number of cubes. I can't stand when there are not enough cubes, I suffered all throughout Scotland and Ireland. Lol!

Northern girl here, with family in Oklahoma. We miss Braum's ice cream (the peanut butter on the sundaes -- YUM!), and Mazzio's Pizza. Mazzio's has an Oreo dessert pizza that is so good.

I’m from the South but live in the North...the only thing I can think of I would miss would be Rita’s Italian Ice but I heard they opened some up in South. Alpine Spice wine from a local winery here in Pa. Now if we’re talking about me going back home to the South I have a list.... Blue Bell ice cream Cajun food Crawfish Catfish (you can find places in North that have this but it’s not cooked right imo) White gravy and biscuits Whataburger BBQ Sweet tea Hushpuppies If you can find a city/state that does a good fish fry, you can find good catfish. Like I always get the fish fry whenever I go to Wisconsin and I usually get a mix of catfish, perch, and walleye. I grew up on Lake Huron, now I live in DFW. In Michigan we would never have thought of eating catfish. Never, ever. I loved fresh perch and walleye. Even smelt. Now that I’m in Texas I’ve learned to like catfish. But when in Michigan, I have to have my perch and pickerel ! Oh and a Coney Island hot dog !

This Yankee girl loves heading South! Can't wait to get on a plane Friday and get down there. Some of my faves:
Sweet tea. I could drink that stuff by the gallon! Hush puppies. The best I've ever had was at Nance's in Murrell's Inlet, SC. Publix. Especially their crab dip. So good. My DD16 loves the Piggly Wiggly. When she was little, she'd walk around saying "Save big with the pig!" Wawa Circle K polar pops but now they've migrated up here so it's not exciting any more.

My friends from Florida always ask me to bring things when I'm going down there from the NYC Jewish delis, like pastrami, rye bread, and bagels.

Deep Fried Cheese Curds are the best from the stand in the Food Building at the MN State Fair. The End Non deep fried cheese curds are delicious and I am just starting to see them out in CO in our refrigerated section at some stores. These were a staple in my MN/WI childhood and I love them equally! Also, deep fried gourmet pickles from the MN State Fair(basically I go home for the Fair!). My town just got Culver's and it is by the kids swim school so I will now have to try their cheese curds, thanks lucyg! I could smell the fries during the lesson yesterday and it was I could to go home for dinner! When I go home I also have to get Old Dutch potato chips. My mom can now get Portillo's in MN so the Chicago girl is now happy since they go to MN more than Chicago. I always get LeeAnn Chin's when we go home, but they took my favorite dish off the menu so now I might just be going for my favorite tea.

So if I ever venture to the Frozen North again, that's what I'd want. And a Hot Brown if I ever saw it on a menu. My experience with Hot Browns is associated with Kentucky. They're ubiquitous in restaurants there. Speaking of southern sweet tea --- my former MIL made hers with both enormous amounts of sugar and a few saccharine tabs added in to make it "sweet enough." That stuff was awful. You could practically stand a spoon up in it. For the record, while I grew up on sweet tea (made the 'normal' way - lol), I drink it mostly unsweetened now.

I had heard that, so they are creeping closer. There is one on the campus at Oakland University and one at Somerset, but none of that is particularly close to me!

Cheese curds are everywhere here. Fresh ones in the grocery stores, deep fried ones in several restaurants. But the best ones are at the Tulsa Sate Fair. Though Brick-Town Brewery is giving those a run for their money.
I guess I haven't spent enough time north to know what I'd miss from there. More what I would miss from home. Like local Mexican food spots and good ranch dressing.

Oh my gosh! I don’t know that I’ve ever known anyone outside of MN who has heard of Kabetogama, much less been there! My parents and my brother both have places up there and we go every summer. That’s where we are going when we stop at Gordy’s! I don’t know who loves it more there—the kids or the dog. There’s just nothing like have the run of your own island to bring out the zoomies in the kids and the dogs! One resort on the Ash River started the trend with olives in the beer. I’m a bit embarrassed to say that one summer DD and DS used to go over to the lodge for candy and I found out they were begging people for the olives from their beer. They were 6 and 8 that summer! That same summer, another resort was giving out cans of beer during the 4th of July parade. My kids happily rode in it in a boat on a boat trailer. And loved the minnow races (yes, racing actual minnows)! We loved it there and can't wait to go back! We are US National Park junkies and went up to visit Voyageurs National Park and absolutely fell in love with that area of the country. Absolute paradise!

If you are back "Up North" again, and you haven't checked it out yet Ely, MN and Bear Head State Park Bemidji and Itasca State Park The North Shore from Duluth to Grand Portage (Canadian border)----an incredible journey with so much to see Ludlows Island Resort on Lake Vermilion ....and so much more!

YUMMY Provel Cheese - Mainly sold in Missouri, occasionally can be found in Florida I think (IMO's pizza is famous because of this cheese) Deanie's Seafood Restaurant in NOLA... I dream about that place. That is pretty specific but OMG I love it.

When my southern living relatives and friends come to NW Pa they are always ready for Primanti Brothers burgers and Quaker Steak and Lube wings. Neither are my favorite but they are both local restaurants that became very popular and started to open chains in other locations. Personally I think both restaurants lost some of their uniqueness when they branched out and streamlined their production. The Original QUaker Steak and Lube had the best fresh wings ever and was a a fun small establishment where being greeted by name by the employees was something special. And Primanti Brothers would specialize your order and if you went there often enough you could just order your burger by name. “I’ll have the Judy26 please.” Now it’s just a busy chain that is famous for slopping undercooked fries and cole slaw on top of your sandwich. (You have reached the end of my curiously off topic rant about local dives selling out in the name of corporate greed.)
