We live in the midwest. In years past, we were always excited to be in the southern States where we could get Chick-fil-A. We were also excited to try Sonic when we were in TN. Now we have both of those places. I think we've been to Sonic once in ten years? Chick-fil-A a little more often, but still not much. We do like Waffle House. Something about the hash brown, sausage, egg, and cheese bowl is just so good. We don't have any around where we live now, but there are a few in Indianapolis, where my dd goes to school. We make a point of stopping there when we are in the area. I also love some Skyline chili. My whole family are big fans. I went to college near Cincinnati, which probably explains it. We don't have it here, but there's one near where I grew up in Cleveland, and one in Indianapolis, too. Last year when we were driving home from Atlanta, we sought out one in Louisville just to make the trip more interesting and give us something to look forward to. there has been chik FIL a where I grew up in IL/IA since the early 80s at least, if not the late 70s. I never knew it wasn't everywhere until they started expanding

There were two located in malls not too far from my Cleveland hometown, but we didn't get there often and it was a real treat back in the day.

I can't answer your question because I live in the North, but I have heard people who have moved from MN miss wild rice and walleye. We are from Kentucky and spent time in Minnesota last summer. The wild rice and walleye are what we miss the most. We have wild rice available here, but it's just not as prolific as it is in MN. At our resort in Kabetogama, I had nachos with wild rice in them...NACHOS WITH WILD RICE! Craziest thing ever but oh so yummy.
I never realized White Castle was a Northern thing. I live in Kentucky, and we have White Castle. And they make me sick every time I eat them.
You didn't ask about out West, but the place we always go to when out that way is In-N-Out Burger. Can't get that here at all. And that is a cryin' shame.

I grew up in Texas and lived for several years in the deep South as well. Now I'm in Chicago.
I miss: - Chicken Express - Good white gravy (we can find good biscuits here) - La Madeleine - Good iced tea (unsweet, sorry. i'm not that southern) - Whataburger - Authentic, not too expensive Chinese food (almost every Asian restaurant in Chicago is pan-Asian. it's fucking weird) - Easy access to good Mexican and Tex Mex. You can get it here, it's just not everywhere. - Good brisket barbecue

I’m from the South but live in the North...the only thing I can think of I would miss would be Rita’s Italian Ice but I heard they opened some up in South. Alpine Spice wine from a local winery here in Pa. Now if we’re talking about me going back home to the South I have a list.... Blue Bell ice cream Cajun food Crawfish Catfish (you can find places in North that have this but it’s not cooked right imo) White gravy and biscuits Whataburger BBQ Sweet tea Hushpuppies If you can find a city/state that does a good fish fry, you can find good catfish. Like I always get the fish fry whenever I go to Wisconsin and I usually get a mix of catfish, perch, and walleye.

I haven’t read the thread yet and I’m not in the South. (Yes, that’s all very helpful, I know.) But I just wanted to say, I’m in California and whenever I hit anywhere near the Midwest, I am all over Culver’s. OMG! Why do we NOT have Culver’s here? Well, I guess I should be grateful. Also cheese curds. I miss cheese curds.

I did forget about A&W ... I rarely go and I’ve never gotten them there. Aren’t they deep-fried? I wanted fresh ones. They go in my tomato soup and get all soft and squishy. That’s why I love them so much. There are actually some in my freezer right now because Costco had some for a short while last fall. I should get those out.

They are in all our grocery stores too and Sam's club by us has them, as well. I assumed you were looking for fried ones since you mentioned Culver's.

Cheese Curds. I bought some in an airport after learning about them here. So if I ever venture to the Frozen North again, that's what I'd want. And a Hot Brown if I ever saw it on a menu.

As a southern girl who has only been to Waffle House once, what am I missing? What makes it any different than say a Denny’s or IHOP? Totally different - it is more like an old diner with the tables set around the kitchen. The food seems reminiscent of a foregone time as well. The hashbrowns smothered, covered, etc., etc. are comfort food for me, even if they use processed cheese slices with a slightly metallic taste.
iHops around here are more of a standard chain restaurant like Applebees or Ruby Tuesdays now. Newer Denny's are similar, though the really old ones have a different feel.
Oh, the Waffle House I went to wasn’t like that at all, it had more of a McDonald’s like atmosphere, hard booths, etc. If anything it seemed like a budget IHOP or Denny’s. Yeah, IHOP and Denny’s sound the same down here as up there.

I'm from Detroit and I miss Detroit Coney Dogs. Every time we head up north we have to have them. White Castle also. The best are at Duly's Place by Holy Redeemer Church in SW Detroit - Vernor and Junction. Bummer - now I want a couple!

Now that dh and I moved to Texas from Michigan, dh really misses White Castle. I went to college in Mississippi so I really prefer Krystal to White Castle. DH loves Krystal. We can get the frozen White Castle here but no where near as good as the real deal. Which school did you attend? University of Southern Mississippi!

Which? The absence of sugar or the pathetic display of ice? Lack of ice is not the norm. Don't know where you are but in my experience living in New England, they tend to ascribe to the European paltry ice cube philosophy.

As a southern girl who has only been to Waffle House once, what am I missing? What makes it any different than say a Denny’s or IHOP? I don't care for Waffle House at all..some people love it. I prefer mom and pop diners. Waffle Houses here are nasty. They were only suitable in your 20s at 3am when the bars closed and you knew if you puked in the booth no one would really care.

Oh my gosh! I don’t know that I’ve ever known anyone outside of MN who has heard of Kabetogama, much less been there! My parents and my brother both have places up there and we go every summer. That’s where we are going when we stop at Gordy’s! I don’t know who loves it more there—the kids or the dog. There’s just nothing like have the run of your own island to bring out the zoomies in the kids and the dogs! One resort on the Ash River started the trend with olives in the beer. I’m a bit embarrassed to say that one summer DD and DS used to go over to the lodge for candy and I found out they were begging people for the olives from their beer. They were 6 and 8 that summer! That same summer, another resort was giving out cans of beer during the 4th of July parade. My kids happily rode in it in a boat on a boat trailer. And loved the minnow races (yes, racing actual minnows)!

Also they have the best milkshakes..it's this cup that is filled with ice cream and you place it inside a machine then it mixes it up. If you're ever in Texas go to a Buc-ee's.

They have fresh ones (not yet refrigerated) two days a week. Though I do like Culver's cheese curds too. I even was waited on by Craig Culver once! I didn't recognize him at first but when he spoke, it hit me who he was. Guess I listen to commercials more than I watch them lol.
