Update 3/26 Well, we talked to DD finally on Sunday. She was all excited and couldn't stop talking about coming over to us after her Ireland stay and maybe her BFF would fly in over winter break. We told her to call us again in a few hours after the shine wore off and we would decide then. When she called back, she still told us to go. But she was more subdued and it was obvious that she had been thinking about the problems. By then I'd gotten so many responses from the Peas that I was able to come up with some good solutions.
So yesterday, DH put in for the assignment. They assignment guy was chuckling at him and said it was a job that didn't come up much anymore. He also had been trying to get to Europe for 20 years and it hadn't happened. He said he thought we had a 50/50 shot at getting the assignment, which probably means that he has 2 names to forward for consideration.
So we wait. April 15 can't come soon enough!

Since it is only two years I even I would say go for it. And I’m the one who is usually the killjoy in these sorts of threads.

The aging parent would be an issue for me. Are the siblings in the area that can help?

The aging parent would be an issue for me. Are the siblings in the area that can help? DH has an older sister who is a take charge kind of person and she oversees most of their medical issues. We do FaceTime with them every week and I send photos mid week. His mom has some memory issues, but his dad is still sharp as a tack and I know he's lonely. As for my parents, I suspect they may come over or meet us if we go to Rome. It's hard to say. No one ever came to see us in Seoul, but Europe may be a different issue.

Some how I totally missed this thread before now. We left DD behind when she was in college to go on an assignment in Paris. We did keep our home in the States and she was able to come here for weekends when she had a chance. However, she spent the majority of her time off between semesters and summers with us in Paris. It was an unbelievable experience for her (and the many friends who came to visit). The other benefit was that since we were overseas she had to step up and do more things on her own. My advice is get enough bedrooms to accommodate them all!
I'm glad your DH put in for the job and I wish you luck in getting the assignment! Any idea how long before you hear an answer?

I’ve been thinking about how many bedrooms we will need! We rent, and are 1,300 miles from the kids’ schools. So no house here. DS wants to get a dog since our lab will go with us, but I told him not until he can afford the vet bills. We should hear something by April 15. I’ve been doing a little research on how to get our lab, Emma, over there. It won’t be easy! (Or cheap.)

All pet costs are up to the service member. When the airlines changed a lot of the flying restrictions for pets, they did liaison with the airlines to help pets return to the States. Im seeing costs of $5,000-$10,000 to return pets to the States from Asia. Yikes! When I was pricing it out in 2009, it was more like $1,000 to get her to Hawaii. We didn’t get that assignment, but I’m stunned at the current costs.

I’ve been doing a little research on how to get our lab, Emma, over there. It won’t be easy! (Or cheap.) We took a Belgian Sheepdog and an older cat with us to Paris. Used a pet expeditor and flew them on KLM with no problems. They flew IAH>AMS>CDG, then a local expeditor delivered them to our apartment in Paris. That Belgian flew on KLM 5 or 6 times all over the world and we were always pleased with how well she was treated. It's not that difficult to get them over there from the US, just a little costly. DH is still grumbling a bit about the summer I paid to fly DD's dog over with her. It was actually cheaper to fly him over than it would have been to pay boarding or a pet sitter for almost 3 months. If you have any pet shipping questions, please let me know. It's been 6 years since I've flown one, but the basics are pretty much the same.

Your son would like to get a dog. You'll be moving to Europe for 2 years. Travelling with a dog to Europe is way more work than travelling to move over a couple states. Let your son take temporary custody of the dog while you're gone. He gets more practice being a fully responsible pet owner, and you get to enjoy your time in Europe unencumbered.

I was thinking along these same lines. Your lab would be staying with a family member so the anxiety on both of you would be put to a minimum. You know the lab would have excellent care. Since it is your son taking care of the dog do you think helping with any pet bills would be a possibility? This would give your son a chance to see how much work (and money) goes in to taking care of a pet. It's a hard call, that's for sure. I don't know if I could leave my English Bulldog behind either. I'm sure whatever choice you make will be the right one for your situation. (((HUGS)))

Very briefly. But it just isn’t the best decision. Because I’m her person. Because we did some training to make her a service dog when we thought I might need one, and that bond was formed. Because my DH works 12-14 hour days and I’ll be alone there with no job. We work together daily—either training or actual visits. I’ll won’t be able to work there and it will give me something to do with my days. Yes, I’ll travel. But I’ll also just be living an everyday life as well. I’ll have my role as the commander’s wife, but I’ll need something of my own as well.

Also, traveling with dogs in Europe is not difficult at all. We took ours many places and she was always welcomed. It's also not difficult to find someone to dog-sit for you if you choose not to take them with you.

Thank you for not leaving Emma behind basket1lady. You can't just explain to a dog that you will be back. If you are her person, she would miss you and you would miss her. Hope getting her there will be as simple as gypsy girl's experience.

My nephew took his golden to Wiesbaden as he is in the Army and getting NATO training. It has been VERY easy. Marco has been to Italy and Paris etc. Not more work at all..not sure why you'd think that.

I wonder if then she could fly for free??? No, it's not free. Not by any means. I'm looking at some companies that expedite pet transportation, some that transport zoo animals, and intriguingly, going over on the Queen Mary 2. They have an onboard kennel and it could be a fun experience. But I need to know first if we are going. I will say that American Airlines did waive the fee to fly our lab from LAX to Seoul 6 weeks after 9-11. When we went to check her in at the airport, they said something like "it looks like it's all been taken care of." They also boarded us first and announced that a service member was on board. Kind of cool, but it would never work now with all the anti terrorism measures we use.

Hope getting her there will be as simple as gypsy girl's experience. She loves the kids, but she and I just work together. She is in a special therapy animal class right now and yesterday we were working on some new skills. Not really stuff she needs to know to work, but just things that build trust between us. She was the first to pick up the new commands every time. She just really watches me and I mostly just use hand signals now, so it all appears pretty seamless. I sort of laughed though. They wanted us to teach them to wag their tails on command. I had to think about how to do that, then I just touched her tail and she started wagging it. Ok, that was easy after all!

Update 4/11 Well, it’s official. We are moving to Belgium! We don’t have a date yet. The losing command (current job) was notified today. The gaining command (Belgium) will Be notified in a week. Then we can start negotiating our report date. A lot has to happen in the next few months. Here we go!
