Governor of Georgia just signed heartbeat bill. linkThat’s pre-viability banning. Won’t hold up in court. I could be wrong, but I do not know of one state that has been successful in doing this.

Zee Responded ok to your correction. It wasn't really a correction, just adding what I thought I had read. In any case the southern states seeking to ban abortion have the highest rates of maternal and infant deaths. Clearly we're not working to correct that, we're just concerned that they're all born somehow. I can't believe this is 2019.

Busy Philipps opens up about having an abortion: We need to be 'sharing our stories more'BY MORGAN GSTALTER - 05/08/19 10:27 AM EDT TV host Busy Philipps on Tuesday night revealed that she had an abortion at age 15 and encouraged other women and girls to share their stories more. The host of E! Network’s “Busy Tonight” said that while her talk show typically shies away from overtly political discussion, she was spurred to tell her story after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) became the latest state leader to sign a fetal "heartbeat" abortion ban. “Every woman deserves compassion and care, not judgment and interference, when it comes to their own bodies,” Philipps said on her show. “The statistic is one in four women will have an abortion before age 45. And that statistic sometimes surprises people and maybe you’re sitting there thinking ‘I don’t know a woman who would have an abortion.’ ”“Well, you know me,” she continued. “I had an abortion when I was 15 years old. And I’m telling you this because I’m genuinely scared for women and girls all over this country and I think that we all need to be talking more and sharing our stories more.”“So, let’s talk about the Met Gala,” Philipps added. “Is that a hard left turn? Is it kind of jarring? Yes, it is also kind of jarring. But guess what? That’s what being a f---ing woman is. Having a regular Tuesday and then suddenly be reminded that people are trying to police your body. And then you just have to go back to work.” The actress sharply criticized Georgia’s legislation, which bans abortions once a fetus has a detectable heartbeat, which generally occurs approximately six weeks of pregnancy. Philipps noted that is before many women even know they are pregnant. Similar fetal heartbeat bills have been signed by Republican governors in Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi this year, and others are advancing in states including Louisiana and South Carolina. “Here is the reality — and we know this from before Roe v. Wade was passed — no bill that criminalizes abortion will stop anyone from making this incredibly personal choice. But these laws will put more women at risk,” Philipps said. Women in Georgia may still receive an abortion if the pregnancy is believed to be "medically futile," according to Georgia Public Broadcasting. Exceptions will also be granted to a woman whose life is at risk and if a police report has been filed related to rape or incest. Planned Parenthood on Tuesday vowed to sue Georgia over the legislation and work to remove GOP lawmakers who voted for it in future elections. thehill.com/blogs/in-the-know/in-the-know/442671-busy-philipps-opens-up-about-having-an-abortion-we-need-to-be

Just like w/LGBT, those who have had abortions must "come out of the closet" - so people can stop dreaming up boogey men (women) and start seeing the real faces of those who have abortions and hear the real stories of why. It was so easy to hate on LGBT when it was "someone else" but much harder when it was uncle Ray, or son Bob or sister Beth. It will be the same w/abortion.

You will never truly know what you would do until you are faced with this exact choice in this situation. I thought I knew and I was oh so wrong. i 100% agree with this. not sure i could have one but not sure i wouldn't... depending on my life at that exact time. i also don't think it's anyone else's right to tell another woman they CAN'T have access to safe abortions. what a massive step backwards. i just listened to an enlightening and thoughtful podcast on "the daily" from NYT. this is the link to part 1 but you can find it wherever you listen to podcasts. Both parts were VERY good and discussed some of the points manda has addressed as well. NYT podcast - The Abortion Wars part one

State Senator Figures was SO COMPOSED when you know inside her head she's screaming. Of course she has to be as a woman, because if she showed emotion, she'd have been labeled a hysterical female. But that was chaos, for sure.

And this little tidbit ... "Alabama doesn't require sex education in schools. Schools systems that do teach it are required to emphasize abstinence, but can include information about different methods of contraception. Despite the state's abstinence-emphasized curriculum, Alabama has some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy and STI rates in the country."
No abortion and no sex education. Alabama needs to get their head out of the sand.

The five states with the lowest maternal mortality rates were:
1.California; 2.Massachusetts; 3.Nevada; 4.Connecticut; and 5.Colorado.
The five states with the highest maternal mortality rates were:
1,Louisiana; 2.Georgia; 3.Indiana; 4.Arkansas; and 5.New Jersey.
Well that is disconcerting for NJ!! Shameful really!

Opinion piece! What's behind the absurd gamble on women's rights and healthBy Carliss Chatman Updated 8:46 AM ET, Tue May 14, 2019 (CNN)Last week, Georgia joined the ranks of states in a sudden rush to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks after conception -- before a woman may even know that she is pregnant. Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio passed similar laws this year. Alabama is taking its fight against choice even further, with a bill that not only bans abortions but makes it a crime for a doctor to perform an abortion. ** As I posited in a tweet last week: "If a fetus is a person at 6 weeks pregnant, is that when the child support starts? Is that also when you can't deport the mother because she's carrying a US citizen? Can I insure a 6 week fetus and collect if I miscarry? Just figuring if we're going here we should go all in." In short: If a fetus and expectant mother are two legal people, they separately have access to all rights and privileges. What is happening here is clear, and should draw us all to the barricades: States are expending public resources to challenge a standard set a lifetime ago—all in hopes that five members of the Supreme Court will choose personal beliefs and politics over principles and clear precedent. ** www.cnn.com/2019/05/13/opinions/georgia-alabama-abortion-bills-carliss-chatman/index.htmlI like the way she thinks!! Better than the pro-birthers! Who care nothing about babies/children food, housing, medical, et al!

Let's hope she doesn't have to think hard about not signing it.
On the other hand I am proud of my state for passing legislation to try and amend our state constitution to include abortion rights. It is a long process but they are thinking ahead.
Excerpt from the article: "Note: This article has been updated with the results of the Senate and House votes on the proposed constitutional amendment in 2019.
The Vermont Legislature has voted to add the right to have an abortion — broadly contained in a right to "personal reproductive autonomy" — to the state Constitution.
The Senate approved the constitutional amendment by a vote of 28-2. The House of Representatives followed suit with a vote of 106-38.
Lawmakers are expected to take up the proposal for a second round of voting in the 2021-2022 legislative session.
The proposed constitutional amendment moved through the Statehouse this year in parallel with H.57, the House of Representatives bill that would recognize abortion rights in state law.
Enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution is more difficult, and would require several years of work, but would set up a stronger legal standard for abortion in Vermont. "

Well...trump has said that all women getting abortions should be punished. Now it’s becoming reality. And yet the men that got them pregnant face no consequences.

I can't believe this is 2019. I am happy to be past my fertile years. But I will fight for my daughter's right to choose. I am beyond any realm of angry. I am livid that men can impregnate a woman and walk away without consequence. No one but the woman and the doctor has the right to make that choice.
If I were a woman in these backward states, I would stop having sex with any man. That needs to be the start. No sex. No abortion. Problem solved.
I would also fight for a chemical castration bill. If a man impregnates a woman that they are not married to, that man is chemically castrated.

No one is forcing women to have an abortion. Legal or otherwise. Yes, there are alternatives. @eighteen24 - I am hereby banning you from posting here at 2Peas Refugees ever again. There are plenty of other alternative sites you can go spew your vitriol at. What? Don't like that? Because you have a right as well as anyone else to post wherever and whenever you want? And who am I to try to take away that right?! Exactly. I will quote scrappinghappy "You just cannot take away a woman's right to her own body..." Did you stop reading right there or did you read what was written after that and just choose to ignore it just so you could say that?
