I am loving these stories! Stephen King chocolate, possums, that crazy house. I have to go there. It sounds amazing. There is a place in lower Manhattan called the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum that is much the same way.
They have completely "restored" a tenement house to look just like it did during the various waves of immigrants through the city.
You have to get a tour but they play recorded stories of the people who used to live there when they were kids. Amazing.
I was literally in tears it was so moving.

((((HUGS))))) sleepingbooty on your family emergency. Hard any time of the year, but especially now. Hope all is well. Loving everyone's December stories. Glad you are figuring out how to document them in your little books. I am wrapping gifts today. Had planned to bake cookies, but realized I am missing a key ingredient for the recipe I was planning to use. And I need most of our gifts wrapped and ready to travel by next Tuesday. Also, I will be in town tomorrow, and I want to make sure I have a complete list of the little things that are missing from my gift stack. (I always do a little 'stocking' for my adult kids, and while some years the little items to pop into it are the first I grab up when I start Christmas shopping, this year those items seem to have been left until last...) So far my shopping list includes crushed pecans, razor blades, socks, tree ornaments, and scratch & win tickets... I also need to pick up the calendar pages I had dropped off at the printers' last week.

blemon, the Denis Severs House is somewhat similar to the Tenement House on the Lower East Side but is more theatrical than educational, if you get my drift. The experience is very much engineered for maximum effect on the audience and though most of it is historically accurate, it's not 100% and there are a few little anachronisms (there's a photo of Diana amongst a set of historic pictures in one room, for example) It's most certainly not for children - in fact, I think there's a lower age limit (but I'm not certain about that - Charwee do you know?) If you're in London with a bunch of friends, then a day in and around Spitalifields with a visit to the DS house makes for a memorable experience.

My day 3 story is quite a fun and unusual “December story”. Our youngest (and largest at 150 pounds) Great Dane caught a possum. Both our dog and the possum were unharmed but the hilariousness of my husband, in his bath robe, trying to scare the possum off our deck with a stick and umbrella, like he was brandishing a sword and shield (which of course made the possum play dead) makes for a fun story and a memory I want to document. I didn’t get a picture of my husband but I do have one of the playing dead possum. ETA: I also got a picture of two of our Danes worn out after the excitement. The spotted one is Niklaus, the possum whisperer. Ha! This was us last year, though our 16 lb Jack Russell ended up using the possum as a rag doll. The possum didn't make it. Apparently Scout (our dog) was too rough with him.

Niklaus is the biggest but sweetest baby I’ve ever owned. We tell him all the time he’s so big because he’s full of love. He carried that possum around like he was carrying a toy. I never saw him shake it once. When I called him to me and asked him to “Drop it”, he dropped it at my feet, sat down, looked back and forth from me and his “toy”, waiting for me to tell him he could play again. He’s obsessed with the little dogs that live behind us. One is a dachshund and the other looks like a jack Russell or other small terrier. Those two dogs run up and down the fence barking and growling at him...and he just gallops along with them, wagging the entire time.

My 10 year old and I were at Target waiting on a nice lady to get us some Andes crushed up peppermint chocolates for baking. She was perusing, what I call, the stocking stuffer wall. It's all single serve candies and smaller toys, etc. Anyway, she pulls out this marshmallow filled Santa and proceeds to read the name "Russell Stephen King marshmallow" and puts it back. I did a double take and asked her to read it again. "Russell Stephen... oh. Russell Stover." I died laughing. She's a total bookworm (or book dragon, as we call her) and it still cracks me up she made that mistake. I totally asked her to stand there with the marshmallow filled thing for a photo for my DD and I'll never look at Russell Stover candy the same again. Love that story!😁

Where did you find a pink tree? My mom has been searching for one but hasn't had any luck. Sorry your baby is getting big. That must be super hard. Hugs. Treetopia.com has the prettiest at the best price. They have them 50% off all the time so a 6’ pre-lit was $150. I didn’t buy it yet but I will probably in July. That's awesome! Thank you so much.

I've not seen an age limit, but the house isn't suitable for kids at all. Absolutly not touching whatsoever. My eight year old daughter would have been fine with that, bu I think my 5 year old would last about five seconds before touching something! (he'd probably try and eat the gingerbread house that was there)
I had heard of the Tenement House, I plan on getting to NYC in the next couple of years, so hopefully I'll get there...

I'm hoping to get to London in a couple of years. By then the kid will be a teen so we'll be good. I was in London in 1997 on a BUNAC visa. I lived in Wembley and worked at the mall in Watford. It was the best and worst experience of my life. I was there when Diana died. I spent the day of the funeral with a friend walking all around the city. We did not feel comfortable going to the funeral. It did not seem right as we were outsiders.

Such great stories everyone is sharing! Love it!
I'm getting a bit rashy and panicky, December 5th and I do not have a single page in my DD album. THERE...IS...NO...TIME. Every night this week it's been something or the other. Two nights of holiday shopping with friends, which has been wonderful and so much fun. But when I get home at 9:30 it's bedtime. Hoping to get a bunch done this weekend. I'm taking notes, journaling, just need to sit down and get it done.

Hoping to get a bunch done this weekend. I'm taking notes, journaling, just need to sit down and get it done. See, this is why I think AE does us all a disservice by promoting her "easy" daily project. Even the most organized person with all their foundation pages ready would have a hard time keeping up with their album if they're as busy as you. You shouldn't have to get up early/stay up late or feel panicky about being behind when you're out doing Christmas! Make the memories first, document them later! For AE this is her job, so of course she needs to find a way to make time for it every day. But for the rest of us this is supposed to be fun. And feeling stressed about it or (heaven forbid) missing out on holiday fun or sleep to get it done is crazy. I think this is why so many people feel like they "fail" this project. For a lot of us there really isn't ANY time in December. It's OK. You're not behind, you don't need to panic. Either things will settle and time/space will open up, or you'll keep taking photos and notes and enjoying yourself and you'll make time to create the album later. I think we need to have a December-Daily-in-January project. I always feel crappy in January, so I think I'd rather re-live each day of December in January by putting my album together then.

I’m with you joblackford I could document christmas much easier in January. Right now I’m too busy trying to be in the moment and enjoy our christmasy events. And even though I don’t have a real job, I’ve got too much going on to be able to scrapbook. Last weekend I was getting ready to document and my husband wanted to take us to the mall and out to eat. A few days before it was the movies. At what point do you say no to the experiences just so you can document? Without the experience, there’s nothing to document! So I figure my stuff will wait for me until I have time to document.

Any suggestions on what to do with the page protector (the new one) that is two 3X8s side by side?
I used the front with a picture of my kid on the right. On the left is text about what we did.
On the other side, I'm struggling. I don't have a good photo of the evil demon tree. One side I thought I would use the free Kerri Bradford file that was in her 12 days of christmas giveaway. The other side, maybe text again?
I've not seen people use these much yet.

A nutcracker?

Just watched the fourth of Shimelle's Journal your Christmas videos and am really loving her no fuss approach. I really like how she's refreshed the prompts and how "real world" she's keeping it. It's also interesting how she's placing embellishments and tags flush with the edge of the background paper. I'm not quite so sure I like that so much, but I'll give it time...maybe it will grow on me. What do you other JYC folks think? I was a bit bothered by the placement of the die cuts and things on the edges - I don't think I would do that but she makes it work (as always, I'm always giving her the side-eye but in the end her pages look great). I'm just amazed that she's good to go after having that awful influenza last week. What timing! Makes sense that she might take a few days to get back into the swing of things. Plus the whole house being chaos, no studio, no space for a tree, etc.

I think I saw one person use it with two long skinny things - I forget if it was a photo and 3x8 story card or something else - but it just looked weird to me. I think I'd sooner print a 6x8 and spread it across the back. Or cut it down to 3x8. Which is basically not using it for it's intended purpose at all. But hey, I hate plastic page protectors at this point, so I should probably hold my tongue!

Have you been posting on the JYC forum? The new prompts have been pretty fun too. I liked that the "helping hand" one coincided with Giving Tuesday. I watch her videos with my lunch most days. You'll probably be even happier with your decision when December 2020 rolls around and you start getting the emails again automagically - she gives us great value for our money! The only thing she almost never follows through on are the promises of an extra video flip through of the finished album after the end of the class, but by that point I can't blame her for being burned out.

I'm with joblackford on this one - I subbed for some tiny price back in 2007, her first year, and ever since then have had her updates as regular as clockwork. If there's been some glitch, it's addressed immediately and there is no doubt that we are dealing with a real person here! Bless her - she manages to keep it all together in spite of whatever life is throwing at her I especially like how her videos are warts and all - if she makes a mistake, she deals with it and moves right along. We get to see the whole shebang, not some edited perfection. That makes a huge difference for me, because that's what happens here and I can identify with it 100%. I'm still on the fence about the placement - I like her finished pages but I'm not into page protectors and I think I'm sticking with borders and margins too, however small!

I'm going to hop back in here and reply to everyone (so many lovely stories shared!) + finally start on my photo book this weekend. It's not been a good start to the month for us and I've got to deal with real life first and foremost but I have not forgotten you ladies and try to read up on this thread at some point during the day. Just no time to come and have fun with you right now. Sorry! Sending you all love and December joy in the meantime. Prompt n°5: Christmas letter
This one is inspired by the lovely and talented Brandi Kincaid who has done two entire December Daily albums in the epistolary format. Christmas is the season for greeting cards, family newsletters and notes to Santa in the hopes we made the nice list. Consider writing a letter in your December album today. To a loved one who's passed away but not forgotten, to your children (maybe you want them to have a heartfelt note about the magic of sharing the holidays with them for them to reflect on later in life when they reminisce flipping through the December albums), to yourself about how far you've come this year, a letter to Santa now that you're all grown up and are passing along this tradition of belief and wonder to your own kids to let him know what he means to you now, etc. Photo ideas: Old and new photos to illustrate the theme and/or recipient, the way you incorporate a loved one who passed away in your present holidays (like their framed photo by the nativity scene or tree), a selfie of yourself writing said letter. Song of the day:

US folks who like Starbucks - are you playing their Christmas game? You can shake the snow globe twice a day without making any purchases so hubby and I do it every morning. LMK if you need help with how to do it (basically you just have to scroll to the bottom of the game board and there's a link that says to play without making a purchase "click here" - you can do it twice a day). www.starbucksforlife.com/#/gameTheir graphics are so much fun, so I like to take a screenshot and include that in my Christmas album as well. I'll have a page about my free bakery item I won the other day - the gingerbread loaf sounds good!

I haven’t been doing a good job so far. I haven’t kept up with my December scrapbook. Plus, I thought I was done shopping but I couldn’t resist Doodlebug Winter WonderlandSigh. I even bought some of the Doodlebug Winter Wonderland stamps. I really don’t need more holiday stamps.

Prompt n°6: Not just the 25th
December is about more than Christmas Day or whichever holiday you celebrate this month. There are holidays from yore, old family stories and traditions, maybe pre-Christian pagan celebrations you're interested in, maybe multiple cultural celebrations in your family (Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.). This is also a wonderful opportunity to document any ancestral holidays you heard family tralking about/grew up with (Saint Nicholas, the befana, Krampus, etc.), old Christmas stories and myths you've been reading about (a lot of Scandinavian nisse/tomte love in here), the origin story of your family's elf on the shelf, ancient winter folklore you're enjoying through novels (like Katherine Arden's Winternight trilogy), etc. Photo ideas: The seasonal décor you put up to celebrate these other traditions, the pile of books you've read about this feast or mythical creatures, a photo of the shoes/slippers your family put out for Saint Nicholas. Song(s) of the day:

All caught up with the daily prompts (finally)! Prompt n°7: From where *you* standToday's prompt is a little different because we're being challenged to see December through someone else's eyes. The two main ways to do this are to level down or to hand over control (I know!). If you have a younger child or pet, you can crouch and see the world from their perspective, perhaps try to journal from their point of view and maybe interview your young kiddo for some funny answers. Try to see the magic they see. If you've got a willing older child or spouse, let them document their day/favourite view or moment and write down why they chose that, what it means to them. It's a wonderful way to step away from the bubble we live in as scrapbookers and our usual documenting habits! You could also have a friend or relative living far away share something from the Christmas spirit in their everyday life with you for this prompt (how their city our home looks like, for example). Whatever you do, let someone else's sense of seasonal wonder enchant your album today! Photo ideas: If you have Christmas decorations up in the bedroom, snap a photo from the POV of your kid in their bed/crib. Get down on your pet's level to see the room from their perspective. Have a loved one send you *their* favourite view of the Christmas season. Crouch down and stand behind your (grand)child to snap a photo of them looking at the Christmas tree/city lights/etc. Song of the day:

Struggling with Christmas spirit this year and feeling like I'm behiond before I even get started. Others have said it already but just in case you need a reminder: take it easy, take it slow. You don't have to get in the Christmas spirit or feel like you do other years. This is also your time for grieving and mourning. It sucks that it coincides with the "happy season" but just remember that as long as you're feeding yourself and the family, making sure you sleep enough and monitor your mental health, you're doing good. Hang in there, sweet Linda , it's rough. Give yourself the time and space to handle the pain. It's ok to have a subdued Christmas this year. It really is. *hugs* I've decided i am only putting the limited amount of free time and emotional energy into that which gives me joy. Sounds corny, but i just can't do more than that. There will be easy cookies, and gifts ordered online, and lots of holiday movies watched. You're doing good, mama! I grew up with a single parent who didn't get any child support despite what the divorce settlement said and I know the struggles you're going through. Keep it easy and cosy and comfy! You shouldn't feel bad about no longer being the middle-class SAHM mother who could "do it all." And it doesn't take away from the fun and memories you can create as a family either. I look back with a lot of fondness and love at my childhood Christmases. I've tried to convince my kids that a Christmas Coq au Vin or Holiday Pasta is a better alternative. In the same corner, janamke... Currently trying to convince my stepfather that bœuf bourguignon would make a wonderful Christmas Eve dish! One bright spot, I decided to add funny Christmas memes to my kids' advent calendar this year. They are 15, 12, and 12, so that was a risk, one never knows how stuff like that will be received with those ages. They are loving it! Score one for the cool mom! Such a lovely Advent calendar idea! You've totally earned your Cool Mom cred. we had a full family snow day... with a record snow storm... we got 22.6 inches! With our snow day I ended up having time to work on my December daily and was motivated! That is a lot of snow! So glad this day off gave you the space to get into the DD spirit. I know how important starting on this album was for you... My daughter is 11 now and clearly knows the elf is not real anymore but she really wanted the elf to be real. So I found a green bag and Owen showed up with the bag so she got to look through the bag and we talked about how she is now the creator of magic and she gets to move the elf. I was bawling. Yay for letting the children in on the adult secrets and handing them a little responsibility in making the magic happen. You did great with the official passing down of Owen and I'm sure this will be a very special memory for her to cherish for many years! I have noticed her wearing long long sleeves like she gets very cold (although a friend pointed out that some people wear the thumbhole sleeves all the time to hide scars from cutting, which I don't think is the case but I could never get out of my mind). I wondered if she's just a cold person, or if they keep the house cool. Thumbhole sleeves are particularly addictive if you grew up with them. They are prevalent in dance wear. I still love a cosy thumbhole sweater or arm warmers with a thumbhole. Yep, I'm that 30-something... Also, our apartment averages at about 18°C (64°F) during winter. Curse you, bad insulation from old homes and buildings! Ya feel me, joblackford? (or ya don't because ya frozen ) We've never had an elf, but German Godparents taught our son about St Nikolaus' visit and he's still careful to polish his shoes for the 6th December "just in case"! (And yes, he's sometimes lucky, if I remember to organise something fun!) Did I mention he's now 35?! Ain't no shame in our Saint Nicholas game! I still get my mother a tiny St. Nicholas gift for December 6 as a nod to a few years of living abroad in a place where they celebrated it. She's in her sixties! Oh my, that's so funny! A true literary brain at work, there... Went to East London with a friend and wandered around Spitalfields. We ate bao for lunch, got a (free!) mince pie from a favourite baker with a coffee, enjoyed the neon Christmas lights and drank mulled wine, but we were mostly down to visit Dennis Severs' House, It's a strange place, not quite a museum, not quite an art installation, but the experience is incredible and wonderous. It's a house that is decorated as if it were still in the 18th century, and at this time of year is full of Christmas decorations. I should visit Dennis Severs' House for Christmas then! It must look extra special... Sounds like you had a great time in London. It's also interesting how she's placing embellishments and tags flush with the edge of the background paper. I'm not quite so sure I like that so much, but I'll give it time...maybe it will grow on me. What do you other JYC folks think? The flush embellishing is a bit more modern but I find that it suits the smaller format well and that Shimelle anchors them properly so they don't look funky. At least not to my eye... Aww, what a funny and sweet story! I was born into a Great Dane family. After he passed, we had sighthounds so I'm very partial to tall doggos. I'm not surprised your big boy didn't hurt the possum though: Great Danes truly are gentle giants. How freakin' appropriate that his name is Niklaus for this December story, though! So far my shopping list includes crushed pecans, razor blades, socks, tree ornaments, and scratch & win tickets... Our December shopping lists always look so odd, grammadee! Festive stuff mixed in with everyday necessities... I love the photo you shared of your grandson discovering what's in his Advent calendar, by the way. His PJ's matched the Advent calendar's colour scheme perfectly. And how cute that the pooch was keeping an eye on him from the sofa! Very adorable. This was us last year, though our 16 lb Jack Russell ended up using the possum as a rag doll. The possum didn't make it. Apparently Scout (our dog) was too rough with him. Those little terrier dogs, they will survive the apocalypse, I tell you. Fun but feisty! I think we need to have a December-Daily-in-January project. I always feel crappy in January, so I think I'd rather re-live each day of December in January by putting my album together then. Definitely! December Daily/JYC/December albums should not add extra pressure to an already busy month. Big fan of giving us the space to create/continue creating with those memories in January. Great idea! This is my first year doing JYC and I've only watched the first 2 videos so far (hoping to at least catch up on the journaling this weekend) but I'm enjoying it so far. Her style is not at all like mine but she's such a great teacher, it doesn't matter. I'm so happy I listened to the peas and joined in. Shimelle's got that teacher magic. My style also differs greatly from hers but it just doesn't matter. I still learn every single time I watch one of her videos. I posted the other page too. Swipe to see it. I do really like the two verticals. It’s a fun challenge. Gah, loving your horizontal versus vertical strips for the Grinch spread! Very well done (and that fun bit of stitching).
