A quick google search shows that the tag “nogfz” stands for no gun free zones. So basically this person wants guns to be allowed everywhere, all the time. I would encourage everyone to ignore the spew of a person who has chosen that username. Thumbs down. It irritates me when someone comes into our community just to stir the pot.

Sadly, when I heard about Gilroy, my first thought was - well, we were about due for another one... And now 2 more in less than 24 hours. Too bad we don't worry about our homegrown terrorists. In Dayton, even though the good guys with guns stopped the shooter in less than a minute, he was able to kill 9 and injure 26.

And another in Dayton OH. 9 dead 16 injured. Within 24 hours. And we still have 4 hours to go in this 24 hour period. Wonder if there will be another.
Another shooting 14 hours after El Paso. This time in white Ohio. How can any of us feel safe? We'll all be dead before congress will pass any gun law.
FWIW, and not that it matters, Dayton isn’t really “white.” About 40% of the population is Black. When will Congress do anything and enact sensible gun control legislation? How many senseless gun deaths are enough? I find it ironic that we have discussed the lack of mental health support and care here on this board for decades, and only now when the gun issue has become impossible to ignore and sweep under the rug are the right-wing extremists suddenly interested in mental health, claiming that no one else has been calling for solutions to our country’s mental health crisis. They are clinging to mental health issues as a last ditch attempt to divert attention away from the very real and undeniable problems of unfettered access to firearms in our country. And they were never interested in tackling mental health until now - much preferring the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” approach.

I truly support the spirit behind all of those restrictions. They make sense on the surface. Now tell me, how do you make criminals and mentally impaired persons abide by them? Again. Focusing on the object is being blind to the true problem. Right, because criminals and some mentally ill people will not abide by laws that make murder illegal, we should wipe all those laws off the books. Because some people will murder, we should make it legal for everyone to murder anyone by that very flawed logic. Stupidest reason for not enacting restrictions on access to assault style weapons and high capacity magazines, ever. Someone in my family tried that logic on me today too, the whole “criminals don’t care if there are stricter laws” nonsense. I said then we should take away the laws that make drunk driving illegal. Then they said we should just take away all cars too because people drink and drive. I just rolled my eyes as loud as I could and walked away. I just don’t know what to say to people that say stuff like that. This is a person I love dearly, and this is pretty much the only thing we disagree on, it is so incredibly frustrating. What the eff is the matter with people? Why can’t people say that most of us liberal snowflakes realize banning all guns is never going to happen, but for the love of life itself what is wrong with sensible gun laws and banning the weapons used in these kinds of attacks?

And they were never interested in tackling mental health until now - much preferring the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” approach. The mental health issues argument has always been a red herring. Even if we pretend that it’s a legitimate argument, the actions of gun rights advocates contradict the focus over mental health. If they argue that mental health is truly the root of the problem, one would think that mental health services would be a priority for them, right? But that’s not so. There were studies that linked voting patterns to the preservation of gun rights, and found that gun owners are more likely to vote for Republicans who generally have no interest in curtailing gun rights. The same Republicans who haven’t stopped attempting to repeal the ACA since its inception. So, they’d rather vote for leaders who would take healthcare access away, i ncluding mandatory mental health services in the ACA, so long as they can keep their guns. How does this even begin to make sense?

But some of this is just pure evil. There are things medicines and therapies can't fix. There are people who are just evil. Agreed! iamkristinl16 is right. What have Republicans done to improve mental health care? I haven't even heard bills introduced to try. The conversation on this is one sided. And minimal, at best. There is a huge issue with parity of care. I can talk all day about this, if you want to start another thread. I have excellent insurance. But mental health isn't given the same kind of coverage as physical health. You both have said it so well! Thank you!

You know I'm starting to get tired of blaming mental illness. I have long been an advocate of psychiatrists having the ability to put mentally ill people on block lists for gun purchase. I'm fine with my name being on that list too even though the chances of me hurting someone are zero. But some of this is just pure evil. There are things medicines and therapies can't fix. There are people who are just evil. I don't blame mental illness, i blame lack of good mental health in people. I don't think you need to have a page in the most recent DSM to have poor mental health

It makes me feel so ill that someone like that walks among us Thanks for your kind words - I’m really okay. Her words say a great deal about her, and not much about me. I would hate to have to live inside her skin 24 hours a day. And, sadly, just as Trump has brought out in the open the hate that a large white segment of the population has always held, this debate has just brought out in the open what has always been a part of our community. She and others like her have walked among us since the beginning; they just choose to take a variety of user ids in an attempt to hide their hate and continue to use the board for personal support under other ids. They are cowards, too fearful of the consequences of posting under their more well-known personas. As much as I vehemently disagree with snowsilver on these issues, at least Elise is brave enough to post under her own name. The others are just keyboard cowards.

I agree that guns/lax gun laws are the main problem. But I am also concerned about what seems to be a problem with some young men. I’m not a mental health expert, but there does seem to be a problem with young men who are/feel socially isolated. I dunno; maybe I’m wrong. But why do so many of these shooters seem to be young men with few friends? Honest question. I do know that somehow, some way, we have got to reform our laws. And just because we have a second amendment doesn’t mean that you should be able to have a gun that can murder a number of people in a few seconds. That’s just a sense of entitlement gone barking mad.
I think my slogan for the 2020 elections will be “ Haven’t we all had enough?” I certainly have.

They are useless, aside from thoughts and prayers.

I think it was someone being interviewed on CNN or MSNBC said they were glad they hadn't heard those words yet! Well, we can all rest easy now. Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and John Cornyn have all sent out their thoughts and prayers. Now let's just move on to the next one, shall we? Even in my disgusted sarcasm, I didn't imagine the next one would be less than a day later. I'm just sick.

I do believe that fully automatic weapons should be banned. I do think things like bump stocks and anything else that can make a gun fire like an automatic should be banned. I think high capacity clips should be very well regulated in that there must be a specific reason, you must pass a background check, and maybe even some sort of psych test to be able to legally own more than a 10 clip I truly support the spirit behind all of those restrictions. They make sense on the surface. Now tell me, how do you make criminals and mentally impaired persons abide by them? Again. Focusing on the object is being blind to the true problem. Hey, no gun free zone, there aren't any mentally ill people free zones or countries. people are people worldwide with the same problems mentally. Yet here, in our 'best' country, the shootings outnumber most countries combined. What's the difference? Hint: it's not the stability of the people in general.

While we argue amongst ourselves about the perfect solution, more massacres are happening. Still others are being planned. What we're doing IS NOT WORKING. And it seems to me that there are so many things we could try without even approaching a 2nd amendment argument. While we bicker, people are dying. Something needs to happen other than just thoughts and prayers! (And I am one who does believe in prayer, but we also have to actively work towards a solution ourselves.)

What else should we do? My Dem lawmakers are writing/supporting bills that would alleviate the problem if not totally solve it (because of the 2A) and we’re not getting anywhere because of opposition. I continue to contribute to The Brady Campaign, and I’m sure many others do, too, with other gun control lobbyists. I vote for people who are not in NRA’s pocket, and I’m sure many others do, too. What else can we do?

I guess that it’s comforting for some, but it is time for Congress to move past it and actually address the problem. They won’t, though. Which is why the Senate race in 2020 is so important. We have got to neuter Mitch McConnell.

This “guns are inanimate objects” argument is about the silliest thing anyone can come up with. Staplers are also inanimate objects but you can’t massacre people with it. Exactly. Or knives. Yeah, people can kill with a knife, but when was the last time someone killed 9 people and gravely injured 26 others with a knife in less than two minutes?

Beyond that, yeah, we are pretty helpless right now.

WELL!! A republican says 'white supremacy' !! Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Sunday condemned the recent mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, as "a heinous act of terrorism and white supremacy."“We must speak clearly to combat evil in any form it takes. What we saw yesterday was a heinous act of terrorism and white supremacy. There is no place for this in El Paso, in Texas, or anywhere across our nation,” Cruz tweeted Sunday. “We are all Americans and we are all standing united with El Paso.” He added that as a “son of a Cuban immigrant,” he is “deeply horrified by the hateful anti-Hispanic bigotry expressed in the shooter’s so-called ‘manifesto.’” “This ignorant racism is repulsive and profoundly anti-American,” he tweeted. ** Cruz's colleague, Texas Sen. John Cornyn (R) responded to the shooting by pushing back against the calls to pass gun control legislation. He tweeted that “for every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong.”
“Sadly, there are some issues, like homelessness and these shootings, where we simply don't have all the answers,” the Republican senator said, adding that some progress has been made by “improving the broken background check system, improving access to mental health treatment, by hardening soft targets like our schools, by enhanced training for law enforcement and mental health professionals.”
“But we need to keep trying. Focusing on law abiding citizens exercising their constitutional rights solves nothing. We need to treat these crimes as problems to be solved, rather than one to be exploited for partisan political gain.” ** thehill.com/homenews/senate/456118-texas-gop-senators-respond-to-el-paso-shooting

These shooters are armed with high power assault weapons and sometimes body armor. Hard to fight them off if you have a handgun.
