We will probably be buying something in the next few months, as DHs truck--2003 Chev Silverado 4x4--has some major issues. We will keep the truck for now, nursing it along while we decide if we (meaning he) really needs another truck, and my Toyota Camry hybrid (he will use to get to work) and I will get something new. I originally wanted a van again--I loved my Honda Odyssey for the utility and comfort, and being able to haul lots of people and/or stuff. But after visits to dealerships, I'm thinking of getting a smaller SUV type vehicle. Haven't driven any yet, but the ones I like so far are the Honda Passport, Subaru Forester Touring, and the Hyundai Santa Fe. Chime in with your likes/dislikes on what you have--Peas opinions seem pretty reliable. TIA

My sister had a Santa Fe that she liked well enough, and I considered that several years ago when I was car shopping. We ended up getting a Ford Escape. It worked out so well for me that when we were looking to trade up, I got another one in 2017.

DH is a fan of Jeeps and we have had a few. He now has a Grand Cherokee and really likes it. It’s big enough to haul most things with the seats down, passengers have enough room in the back, and it’s good in the snow.

If I was buying I might buy a Santa Fe.
I am currently driving an Atlas and I loathe it. Too truckish and boxy. I like an SUV with extra cargo space but that feels more like a car.

I replaced an early model Honda Pilot with a CRV. We no longer needed the third row and wanted better gas mileage. The CRV has been great for us. Our favorite thing is that the backseat area is surprisingly roomy and is big enough for road trips with our college age kids.

I have a 2011 Kia Sorento. I like it and it's been a great car for us but I don't want/need all that seating anymore. I've been looking at the GMC Terrain or the Chevy Equinox. I want an SUV but something a bit different (smaller?) than my Sorento.

I love love my Acura RDX. Not too big, but comfy on a road trip. Drives beautifully. Controls are intuitive.

No personal experience but when we were car buying in 2017 we heard and read nothing but rave reviews for the Subaru Outback. It was just to smallfor our needs, we ended up with a Highlander. But SIL has one and they love it. They use it to go camping and haul gear quite a lot.

We are going to be in the market for a new car early next year and we are between the Subaru Ascent, Kia Telluride and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Probably in that order.

I like my Nissan Rogue a lot. It is my 3rd small SUV. It sits up high, and it feels very solid.

I’m looking at the Subaru Crosstrek - I had one as a rental car and really liked it. Seems like people always love their Subaru’s

We traded in a 2004 Honda Pilot (which I LOVED) for a 2019 Toyota Highlander. I didn't think I could love a car more than my Pilot but I do. The Highlander drives like a dream and has so much leg room my 6' 2" DH and DS can't believe it. In the Pilot I always had to pull my seat way up for DS to sit behind me. I don't have to adjust the seat in the Highlander at all.

We were just exactly where you are! Our 13 year old Altima gave up the ghost last week. I just purchased a 2018 Santa Fe two days ago and I'm loving it. I decided on the Santa Fe after test driving a Rouge, Kia Sorento, and Buick Encore. Honestly, they were all very nice, but the Santa Fe just felt the best to me.
Good luck. I do not enjoy the car buying process.

I love my new CR-V. It has loads of bells and whistles for safety and other things and it drives so smoothly.

I don't have to adjust the seat in the Highlander at all. We are on our 3rd Highlander, both of our current vehicles are Highlanders. Dark grey and light silver. I actually wanted the new one to be the same dark grey but DH was not on board DH is 6’5” so that is always our first concern when car buying. And we travel a lot for his triathlons, and don’t travel light so even though it is just the 2 of us we really need and appreciate the space in the Highlander. I also have back issues and the seats are so comfortable. I just drove to Boulder (14 hours) and back and Springfield (11 hours) and back with almost no issues. That’s unheard of for me. So Agnes, if you decide to look at mid-sized SUVs I would definitely recommend the Highlander.

I have a Subaru Forester, and I do love it. It is a great car for winter driving. I am in the northeast and work a 2nd shift job, where I can’t call out, even if we are having major snowstorms. Going home at night is often dicey and to get to my condo I have hills. This has been a game changer to my commute, and well worth the downfalls of the vehicle. The back seats do not fold flat, so while okay cargo space, I am sure there is better options if that is crucial. I have a roof rack if absolutely necessary, but have access to trucks if i have something really large to transport, so again that didn’t really play a part in my decision. It is not the smoothest riding car, but again I revert to the great winter handling as the more important option. Good luck with your purchase. Buying a car is like sticking 1000 needles in my eye as far as I am concerned.

I just recently got a VW Tiguan and am loving it. I had I 4 days and took it on a 1,000 mile round trip vacay. No issues, it was comfortable and got amazing mileage. 500 miles and didn’t have to fill up the tank (interstate travel).
It could have a little more power, if it’s something you might need, but I won’t be towing or anything.

We have had 2 Mazda CX-5's - love them both. Great ride, no major maintenance issues.
We traded my DH's car in and just bought a Chevy Traverse. It might be bigger than you want, its my first Chevy ever. But I love it! The next sizes down are the Blazer and the Equinox, you might want to try them out!

I have a 2019 Forester Sport and love that thing. The gas mileage is awesome. It is not the most comfy ride for a 1000 mile trip but after awhile, no car is comfy.
I had a Ford Edge before and I did lose a bit of cargo space in the back. Unlike someone upthread, my seats do lay flat.
My DS has a 2018 Outback and really likes it. I do think he has a bit more cargo space than I do. When I get to a point where I don't think I will ever need to haul anything, I am looking into the Crosstreks.

Dh had to pull me kicking and screaming from my car to an SUV when our dogs outgrew our car. I love my Toyota 4runner. It’s not small like you are looking for since we keep a larger crate in it to fit our Samoyed and German Shepherd Dog. Whenever we talk about what to get next it’s always another 4runner.
Because we love both of the Toyotas we’ve had I would lean towards a highlander.

We have two Subuarus-- a Forester and an Outback. My dd is currently driving my old Forester. Both cars are great-- the Outback is a tad bigger and more refined, IMO. They're both great cars and great options if you are interested in a smaller SUV-type vehicle.

Because we love both of the Toyotas we’ve had I would lean towards a highlander. Our first Toyota (small truck) lasted over 300K miles. We were young, broke, and did not take care of it. The next one (Highlander) we bought used w/ high mileage and I believe it was over 200K when we decided to buy new. The one I drive is a 2017, actually purchased in 2017 and I’m about to hit 60,000. Zero issues so far, as to be expected. We love, love, love the 4 runner but DH doesn’t fit nearly as well, the back seat had a lot less legroom and less cargo space. All of which we needed so we had to pass. He was especially disappointed. OP in case it’s important to you, the ride didn’t seem as smooth. I think that’s because it is on a truck like chassis rather than a car one. That’s what a salesman told me and I have read several times anyway. But it is a bit smaller than the Highlander, much sportier looking, and is known to last forever so I’d definitely consider it!

I am deciding on either the GMC Terrain or the Chevy Equinox. I love the new Blazer and the Equinox as well.
Am only going to consider GMC / Chevrolet products due to employee discount. LOVE "On Star" as well.

I just got an Acura RDX last spring and I love it. The MDX is a little roomier, but I drive a lot of miles each week and didn’t want that extra size.
My last car was a Santa Fe and it served us very well for a decade. Kept us safe in two high speed rearenders!

I have a 2017 Subaru Outback and I LOVE it!! I got it with the eyesight technology (I think that's what it's called), it will almost drive itself sometimes. LOL
