So, is the city of SF affected too? What about the airport? This is crazy! So far the city, bart and the airports are not directly affected is my understanding. I think most people are fine with one day of no power, but I can't really imagine what will happen if it is really 3-7 days. Our area will be flooding areas that do have power to go out to eat lol

Not sure I believe everything will run as usual.

Benicia/Vallejo/American Canyon are supposed to be outside the outage area, but that can change. For some reason, the AC schools are closed because Napa won’t have power, even though AC will? Makes no sense to me, but it means I may have the step-grands for the next couple of days while my own DGS goes to school here. I’m more concerned about my 90+yo parents in Walnut Creek. They’re quite mobile and independent, and they’re actually just outside the projected outage area, too, but I worry about them trying to get around town and do things if traffic lights are out, stores are closed, etc. Jeez, I guess I’ll go over there if I have to. With step-grands in tow.

I am down in So. Cal. and our red flag days are Thursday and Friday. They say winds up to 30MPH, with gust over 40MPH. There may be outages in some areas, but they are not widespread like up north. Stay safe everyone!

I also find this whole thing surreal. They are shutting down universities, closing the tunnels, traffic lights won't work. I keep thinking they won't actually do it tomorrow.... They will. They were supposed to do it 11/8/18 and they backed off due to public outcry and then the Camp Fire broke out that morning.
I agree with you about it being surreal. Each time we go through this it reminds me of the Purge and I wish I had big security doors to come rolling down over my house. They were supposed to do it right before the camp fire? that's interesting.

They are saying we will go down at noon tomorrow. We have a back up generator hooked up to the propane tank that will power the main level of the house. Propane tank was just filled, so I've got 400ish gallons to work with for now. We are in the hills on the east side of the coast mountains and are being told to prepare to be out till Monday.

My city is going to have outages. Last night our address was included. This am it was excluded. Then, the PG&E site went down so have no idea. The gas station was packed tonight. The thing that bothers me most is I read that you can’t shower in an outage. There’s nothing to pump the water. Duh! I never thought about it.
Well, take care fellow peas in the dark.

Power went off a little ahead of schedule last night. It's going to be a long few days. My city is going to have outages. Last night our address was included. This am it was excluded. I never thought about it. Well, take care fellow peas in the dark. I can shower with no power. Its actually pretty relaxing on a dark shower with hot water warming you up. I have a gas water heater and regular city water service. Maybe what you read is if the water company loses power? When you're on a well it's a different story. With a well no power=no water. I feel really bad for all of my neighbors with wells.

If you’re on city water with a gas water heater, you will have water. We are on city water and have an on demand water heater with an electric start/fan. For us to have hot water, we have to turn on the generator. Fun times. Thankfully, we have power and are just outside the shut off area.

Our city is supposed to be affected on the southern end but someone I know who lives in Vallejo just cancelled everything for this week and said she'd have power back on Sunday. Tonight is our anniversary dinner and fortunately, the restaurant is not affected.

I missed the midnight wave, but it looks like power will go out at noon. Right in the middle of the school day, right in the middle of 1st lunch. That should be fun. No way to know when class ends.

I’m surprised to hear Vallejo is out. ugh
I heard from DD up in Humboldt county ... her power is out, supposedly just for a couple of days. more ugh
We’re still good but I guess I’ll be paranoid all week, anyway. Doing laundry and charging phones again right now.

I'm in Southern California in a low fire risk area (beach city), but the shut offs in No. Cal. just enrage me. My sister is in Larkspur and will probably be without power for 5 days. I can't believe people aren't rioting (well, not literally) -- If I had to go without power that long due to gross ineptitude I would just lose it.

A coworker lives in Vacaville and her power was turned off at midnight last night. I guess I understand them doing it in areas that are heavily wooded and fire prone, but VACAVILLE? It's nuts. I'm glad I'm not a PG&E customer

Your school doesn’t have generators? That is surprising to me, our schools all do, when the generator is running hall lights don’t function, but everything else does. What a nightmare, what about the kids who depend on school lunches? I hope your cafeteria at least has emergency meals to serve the kids.

I feel for everyone who has lost or will be losing power. My freezer is packed right now and the thought of possibly losing all that food terrifies me. PG&E's outage map is down. You can search areas that are affected here: projects.sfchronicle.com/trackers/power-outages/

the schools don't have generators, cause there are very few times they lose power around here.. no hurricanes, no tornados, no snow days... last time wide closures were for bad smoke filled air. and no I would not expect the schools to have emergency meals, since at most schools, there are no kitchens and they get daily delivery of prepared food. there can be very very bad fires in urban areas.. anyone remember the Oakland fire? 25 or more dead, 3000 houses burned.. I saw the flames when I was standing at the golden gate bridge.

I saw the flames when I was standing at the golden gate bridge. Wow, that is surprising to me. We don’t have snow (well, if the predict snow school is closed, we closed 3 days last year for no other reason then the weather men predicted it might snow), bad wind, tornado or hurricanes either, but the school’s have generators. Heck, we have had ours utilized at least 3 times so far this year, and I don’t have any idea why. I just know when it is going off because it is right outside my room. There was certainly nothing that was affecting the power anywhere around us, sometimes stuff just goes down at the school so the generator kicks on. I don’t remember the last time we actually lost power for more than a flicker where I live, it had to be over 10 years ago. Regarding the emergency meals all our schools have food ready for any emergency. It is all food that is storable, pepperoni sticks, protein bars, canned fruit, the milk boxes that don’t have to be refrigerated, etc. I am shocked that not all schools have those. Our school had to use them one day last year when the delivery truck didn’t come for the day. If the schools don’t have power I am shocked they could still be open, the food situation alone would make them shut down in our area. They have to be able to provide food for the kids, how can they do that without refrigerators? The food may be delivered daily, but it can’t sit out all day waiting for the kids and I can’t imagine they can deliver it to all the schools within the safe range of serving it. They must have some sort of a kitchen. Our cook doesn’t cook anything, but she still has a kitchen for preparing the fruits and vegetables and washing and storage.

I would hope the district office decides to shut down if they power does go out, but it won't shock me if they don't. Nothing this district does shocks me any more. They kept a school open for days without running water until the health department found feces in the toilets from them not being flushed. Of course, that was a low income school full of brown kids so that might have had something to do with it. Only about half of our 50 schools are possibly going out and I can't imagine the district shutting down the entire district for that. The loss of funds would be too great. And if half go down, the other half will claim it's unfair that they have to stay open.
