Poor Jailyn. What happened to her is so disturbing. (if that’s not who you mean by ‘Baby J’ my apologies.) Totally who I meant - I can’t even imagine what that baby went though for 11 days! I am just horrified by this. That poor baby. I saw the sentencing and then the coroner testifying on behalf of the baby. That was all I could watch. I can't bear the thoughts of what that poor child went through. It saddens me that neighbors didn't hear her cry and try to do something.

I wouldn't drive a Tesla if it and the electricity were given to me for free. They are actually a blast! I drove a Model 3 and it will set you back in the seat! And I sure as heck would not turn a Roadster down! But electric cars are most definitely NOT a thing around here. I think there might be a super charger about 25 miles from me, but nothing closer. I could easily install a charger in my garage or shop, if I needed to. DH likes the Model 3 and I will not ever be surprised if one shows up in my garage some day. Just for local tooling around. We only have pickups at this point, and mine is an Ecoboost, so somewhat decent milage. But all my short trips to town and back would be nice to have something electric. Probably seasonal though. LOL The truck is really ugly. It looks like a DeLorian that was built in shop class, by a freshman... lol

We’ve tried all sorts of frozen veggies and I haven’t cared for almost any of them. I pretty much only freeze sweet corn now. A few bell peppers, but I much prefer them fresh. Sometimes I chop up some and freeze them on a cookie sheet and then crumble into a bag to freeze. But, like you said, the texture isn't great for me. Frozen home grown sweet corn seems to freeze the best though! I used to do SO much! We had corn almost every day! Now I don't freeze nearly that much. I didn't hardly do any last summer, and I missed it. I also like the Food Saver! I bought mine for Sous Vide, but I do like to seal a few things up that I am not going to get used. I did a few bags of sweet corn last year. It wasn't as efficient as using freezer bags, but it was sealed up nice! It's just a little slow (and expensive) when you do a couple hundred bags!

I’ve read that in a lot of,places, but have run into very few issues with our frost-free freezer. And it was for items not frozen as well (like in ziplock alone) and in there for a very long time, I think like 9 months - 1 year. And we’ve had tons of other food that long with zero issues. I think the newer freezers might be better, but I had an entire season of frozen garden produce ruined in one. In 6 months it was all tasting terrible. I had frozen SO much sweet corn. Probably close to 300 quarts. I was so frustrated! Bought a chest regular deep freeze (not frost free) and I can store things for a very long time! I have found beef that is 2 or 3 years old buried in there and is fresh and good! I try to rotate better than that though! LOL I have come up with a better system for me. I bought the more rigid, but collapsible, grocery totes that can fold down. They have handles. I fill those and stack them in my deep freeze. I keep them sorted by beef, pork, chicken, veggies, treats, etc. That way I can lift out a tote or several totes to get to what I need. Things don't slide and collapse on each other. It works so well, and when I need to dig deep - no mess!

If you are using your refrigerator freezer - it is most likely a 'frost free' freezer. That means frost doesn't build up an don't have to defrost it. It goes through a daily cycle of warming up to melt the frost and then refreezing. You might hear your fridge gurgle every once in a while - that is the melted frost leaving the freezer. But this is hard on frozen food too. That's what causes freezer burn. If you only freeze it for short term a month or two, no problems! But it is not good for long storage. So eat up what you freeze within a month or two at the most. A deep freeze could be frost free - you really want to avoid that. If you are keeping for long term storage, more than a month or two, get a regular deep freeze that is NOT frost free. You really have to double check to make sure

I much prefer the super thin cutting mats. I have some from Pampered Chef, and just some really inexpensive ones from WalMart. Once they start to get too many cut lines, I just toss them. But I love how easily they are stored in a drawer. They go in the dishwasher well. I can pick them up and bend them to add into bowls or pans of food I am prepping.
I have a couple nicer wood ones, and I keep those for serving bread, cheese or other foods like that.
I had a neat wood one that I ended up gluing wood balls to, to make a cut riser for on my kitchen counter. Works to serve cheese off of also.

I am loving my new HexClad. I have slowly transitioned over to them. You do need a little fat in them to make them more non-stick. I keep a spray bottle that has either olive oil (light) or avocado oil in it and give it a quick spray, if I do not have any other fat in the pan. I gently pre-heat the pan a bit, add the oil and it is great. Similar to working with a good stainless steel pan.

Then when you see a picture of it, it always looks perfect... or watching a stupid home interior type show or video.. everything is always just perfect. stupid I swear they pull the top quilt/comforter over to the sides you see, to make it look like it drapes that far down. DH & I sleep in a double bed. I hate big beds. But I actually have a king size quilt on my double bed, so that it hangs way down and I can fold it neatly over my double sets of pillows. I have an antique sleigh bed. I have a box spring, mattress, and a 4" topper -so it is HIGH! But the king spread will drape down far enough that it covers the bottom of the area where the box spring sets. I use a king size blanket too, so that it hangs down the sides long enough to accommodate two adults under it. I love it. I rescued that bed from someone's burn pile. GASP. I knew them and stopped to ask if they were going to burn it. Yep. I have them $100, which they took reluctantly. I used denatured alcohol to remove all the stickers their kids had on it and that also refinished the shellac finish. DH re-did the side rails, which were split pretty bad. Oh my god it is a beautiful bed! It was the second sleigh bed I rescued from becoming ashes. My daughter has the other one at her house as a guest bed.

Wow! Those heron are such large and imposing birds! I have one that I chase around in the pasture in the mornings. I check one side and the heron is usually close to the river, so squawks at me and moves up the creek. I then go out and swing back down the creek side to check there, and I swear it throws up its wings and says YOU AGAIN! and flies down towards the river. Amazing and prehistoric looking/sounding. You'd think it would be used to me by now. This has gone on for years every spring.

They have both aged pretty good. Money helps with that. LOL
Both are a bit 'fancy' for my tastes.

I wish we had seen big ones in the water. Would have been cool. I was actually a little nervous with how close we were and how HUGE that gator was. Even my unflappable husband was a bit iffy! LOL That would be the Iowa in us. He can go give his favorite 2000 pound bull a nice back scratch - but that gator was a bit off putting!

The Temu app is horrible, spam and message inundation. Never used the App. That has not been my experience at all. I can't say I really get that from Temu at all. I wonder if I have something set differently. I do get notifications when I order and shipping updates - but that is expected. Do not use the Temu app. That is the reason security experts are worried about Temu accessing your data. Just go directly to their website and order that way. If you use a good credit card, you always have protection if you get charges you didn't make. Better get rid of Facebook, Instagram, etc... lol I do find it easier to shop on my computer, over my Phone though... but that is the case for most places for me anyway.

When we went to New Orleans we went on a plantation tour. We also took a swamp tour. We were hoping to see alligators, but we went in the winter and it was cold, so we didn’t see any. I was hoping to do a cemetery tour, but we didn’t get around to it. We did both of these things in Mid March...and saw BIG gators. Really enjoyed the air boat tour! Steamboat up the Mississippi We enjoyed this also, but it is a bit of a 'slow' day. Not that it is bad, but it's a more sedate adventure. WWII Museum. Fabulous! The welcome movie is narrated by Tom Hanks. We were there for 4 hours but could have stayed all day. Excellent museum! And we have been to a lot of War museums. Top notch. We also went to the Confederate museum which is very close by. It was quite interesting, and my Great grandfather was a Union soldier. Kind of interesting to see 'the other side' ... We enjoyed the trolley cars. You can buy a day pass for very little $$ and you can hop on and off. We rode one out to the cemeteries and walked around a bit.

Everyone says they don't want to buy from China and I avoid it when I can, but a lot of what you buy on Amazon comes from China anyway. Do you want to give Besos a bonus for what you're going to buy anyway? This. I have only ordered from Temu and I have been pretty happy. This is my advice. REALLY read the description. Get out a ruler. Size is sometimes an issue with things like decor, wreaths, etc. I ordered some pretty faux pine branches for Christmas decor and they were about 3" long. LOL I went back and read the description, and YEP that is exactly what I ordered. I thought I was getting large branches, and they looked big from the photos, but nope. They were tiny. I ended up using them on packages and laughed everytime I looked at them. I have ordered some really gorgeous silk flowers for spring. They cost pennies compared to what I could find online elsewhere and they are very nice. But really read that description, measure, and open ALL of the images with it. For some wreaths - the first picture is something stunning - but go deeper in the images to see what you are really getting. Most are ugly plastic copies that look nothing like that original image, which was probably someones Etsy image. You should be good on the graduation decorations - but measure and open every photo to look things over carefully!

I also bought a bunch of the little things you plug into outlets and they emit a high pitched noise that is supposed to keep mice away. I don't know if they really work or if we've been lucky, but no mice in the house in 15 years and those little 'squealers' are plugged into outlets around the house perimeter on the main floor and in the basement and the attached garage ... I am always suspicious if those high frequency devices really work - but I have a friend that absolutely swears by them for his shop. I keep thinking I am going to get some for our shop, but I get too overwhelmed when is start reading the reviews (SO many good/bad) that I just stick with traps and poisons.

I would highly suggest they find a travel vaccination clinic and get a rabies shot. Ask me how I know it is worth it? Signed, The woman who also lives in a log cabin and was bit by a bat in her sleep. (Much less painful to get a vaccine than to go through a rabies vaccination series) I would not hesitate to start the vaccination process. It is not just one, it is a series. They are not the extremely painful type of years ago. There is no going back with rabies. It is fatal. Oh my god!!! Did you know you got bit at the time or did you get sick afterwards??? Thankfully they weren’t sleeping yet and left the house so they knew they weren’t bit or scratched but what a good idea to get the vaccine. I didn’t know there was one!!!! Hope you are all good now!!! I would have them talk to a physician. Any possibility of the bat saliva on any cut or membrane is scary. If you get sick with rabies, it is fatal. The vaccine has to be administered soon after the possibility of exposure. But a physician should be able to help you decide if needed. Mice. They will probably be a part of their log cabin life forever. Manageable, but always there. One way to find small entrances for mice is to turn off all lights, and pull curtains if possible - to make the inside of the house as dark as possible, on a bright sunny day. Look for any light leaks coming in the house. A mouse can fit through the tinyiest hole or crack. Pack tight with steel wool and there is also rodent proof foam that works great. If they have a basement, look there, from the inside, for light leaks. Around the sill of the house, under door thresholds, etc. Mice can come in with boxes that were left outside or in the door if it is left open for even a short time - like when moving in.

I recently registered for Threads for the same reason. Me too! But after much resistance. I was like "I do NOT need another social media to keep me distracted. But then I would want to finish reading what was teased before me. I finally broke down and signed up. But I seldom read and never post. Same for X/Twitter. I have it, never post. I use it more as a "did that happen" confirmation. For example the recent Facebook/Instagram outage. I tried to log in a couple times and then popped on Twitter to find that it was a widespread outage. That saved me from worrying about my account being compromised and trying to reset everything. So I appreciate it for that. None of my friends or family use Twitter. I probably should grab the same name on TikTok too even though I still have some concerns about it. I keep my account private and try to not have anything that would indicate who I am. I did have a TT account. I deleted it because I would get sucked in and couldn't stop watching. Ugh! I had to make myself only look at it at night. It is my TV replacement. I do tend to hop on TT before most anything these days because my algorithm is set to cooking, books, cute baby animals and the like. I don't have to deal with political nonsense at all. Tiktok is my happy medium. I'm totally private, don't post anything but follow a ton of great content creators and have learned so frikin much. Me too! I have my algorithm set now to funny things, cows, farming, cooking gardening and decorating. If something comes up I do not like, a quick flick and it is gone. So, TT users - even if you are “private” can people find you via your email address or is that an option to turn off? If I join TT I want to be totally anonymous. I don’t want people I know in real life to fine me, or for me to be suggested to them, if you know what I mean. Can others still see your profile? I know they look at your phone number or other social media that has the same number attached and suggest friends. I do not believe others can see your email or anything recognizable unless you use a profile picture or name that is easily recognizable as you. You might be recommended to someone that knows you - but they won't "Know you" if your profile doesn't reflect anything personal about you. It will ask you often if you want to merge your friends to follow - I just say no. But I LOVE TikTok. I have managed to limit the time I am on it. I treat it more as watching TV in the evening. I have learned SO many cool things - the most recent was covering a pie, slitting the top and rolling it back to easily cover the edges. So dang simple, but I had never though of it. I find great recipes, how-to advice. Fun decorating videos. And the humor! But again, if it something political or humor that I do not care for - a quick scroll. Do that often enough and that matching content doesn't show up for you. You can also watch TikTok on your computer without needing an account. I don't know if any of the algorithm kicks in to feed you the types of content you want to see - but that is an option. Here is one of my favorite TT videos on how to cover the pie edge. Yep - there are tons of ways to do this, but this one just hits for me! TikTok how to cover a pie edge easily.

if you were a SAHM for a long time what did/will you do after? I have always kinda cringed at the "SAHM" moniker. There is so much more too it! But you all know that! My situation is different than most. Since we farm, I have transitioned into more the a farm hand/truck driver. I am seasonally. The most busy during harvest because I truck silage and all the grain. So from the end of August until November, sometimes December - I am a truck driver and head cook. Silage (which is only about a week for the big bunker) I truck all day, but also make a early morning snack of rolls, or some type of pastry and hot coffee in pitchers, to have ready when the rest of the truckers, packers, and cutter driver show up. I haul all morning, then dip home to get lunch out of the oven, and everyone stops for a quick lunch hour and then back to the field. I go back to the field above 30 minutes after everyone else, so I can quick clean up and get a supper ready in the shop when we quit. Something easy like maid rites or walking tacos that can be simmering the crock pot. And I usually a cookie or brownie to go with that. So I prep a lot of this stuff in advance and pull out of the freezer on the days I need it. When I am trucking grain, I just make field lunches for me and DH that I pack in a cooler for the day. I have a problem with having my stuff all gone by 11 am. LOL Ah Damn it! I also keep hot coffee and some cookies or such in my truck for the cart and combine drivers. I am also busier during calving season (starts soon!) and I help keep planting moving along by bringing out meals, helping fill planter, and parts runner. Always on a parts run! I also do all the bookwork and cook 3 meals a day, plus a little grandbaby watching when DD is out working after daycare hours. She farms and ranches with us. I kinda miss the more "stay at home days" -but my kids are all long grown up! Farm Labor, around here, starts at about $20/$25 an hour. So that is what I am saving our operation by being available when needed. It is pretty hard to find labor, especially when you only need them for short times of the year. And to have a full time hired hand is VERY costly. DH is very appreciative of my contributions. I am a full partner on our farm operation, and have been since the kids were young.

I hadn't heard of this, but I just googled and saw that Corelle itself recommends not using its older (pre-2005) for anything other than decorative purposes, which would be enough for me to discontinue use (I'm pretty sure the plates I grew up with were Corelle, although they did just have an edge pattern, so ugh). Can you find that on the Corelle website? I can't .. I think it was someone called "Lead Free Momma" or something like that, who got this all started. Her testing methods were not scientific and she was scare mongering to get more clicks. It has been disproven, but the hoax still gets brought up and passed around every so often. There seems to be a lot of information on Corelle - most of it inaccurate.

I think she’s also referring to the fact that so many animals have been lost in the fire, not just the feed. A couple of days ago I think I saw a Texas paper say up to 60%. Or, is it possible losing that much stock won’t affect prices drastically? From what I have read, I see it at around 7000 head, leading up to 10K head after euthanasia of more animals that were affected. Although that sounds like a lot, feedyards in Western Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Western Colorado are anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 head yards. And there are MANY feedyards in those states. So 7K to 10K is a loss, and it will definitely hurt the owners of those stock, but it shouldn't have any impact on prices.... shouldn't .. but that doesn't mean the packer can't spin it and bring even more money into their pocket. About 95,000 cattle are slaughtered each day in the US (M-F) ... that is a very approximate estimate, but that gives you an idea of how big US beef production is.

I wish the article directed you to the actual database. Oh me too! How interesting. My Great grandfather immigrated to the US in 1850's. I know that his mother died and most of the family, except for him and his father. I know he went back to Ireland when he was older, after having served in the Army/Civil War, then serving on an Army post to protect the settlers moving west on the Santa Fe Trail (exactly like Dances With Wolves, and even same area). He went back to Ireland, probably in the 1910's with the plan to stay for quite a while, but the records show he came back to the US and to his farm in a very short time.

People who can might want to stock up on beef now, if they eat it. I imagine those prices will go up massively with this Texas Panhandle fire. I don't think that will have an impact on beef prices. Also - there are large quantities of hay being shipped to the panhandle now. Plus it is still early in the grass season. Most beef isn't raised on grass though - it is finished in feed yards (and they have BIG ones there). Cow/calf pairs do rely on the grass pastures more. But the calf is sold off the grass and finished in feedyard. The beef price is more set by supply/demand, corn price and whatever the packers can swindle out of producers, and screw the consumer. We are actively shopping for calves to finish now and the calf price is SHOCKINGLY high. Some went for a very high price last week in Pierre and they were program calves. The buyer bought them and took them out of the program, which was a shocker. To pay the premium for NHTC calves, then take them out and feed them as straight commerical and not get the premium NHTC bump at harvest. We can't figure out how that will make ANY profit. It's perplexing to say the least.

For us - it just makes for a much longer work day. I would much prefer to stay on standard time. DH works until it is dark out, not what the clock says. If you are adversely affected by DST adjustments, do you find the same problems when you cross into a different time zone? Times zones were created to balance the sunrise times. It regulates day/night across the globe. I went to Florida last month, and I woke up with the sun usually, so I woke up when the sun was rising. The time difference really didn't affect me that much. The biggest issue many people have with standard time is it being darker earlier. T he sun sets about 4-5 hours earlier than with daylight savings time. So when people get home it is dark out. And so people are less active. It isnt as safe to be out in the dark. Sunset times change with the season, but it would be 1 hour difference between staying on standard time vs. daylight savings time. I think I get what you mean though? As the spring and summer days get longer, the sun is up longer. The sun would set only 1 hour earlier on the clock with standard time, not 4-5 hours. The sun sets tonight about 6:17 and next week that will be 7:25 - but that is only a difference of 8 minutes on our circadian clock. The longest day is June 20, and that sunset will be 8:59 DST... taking into account time change, that would be 7:59 standard. So the sun sets only 1 hour and 42 minutes later on June 20 than it will tonight (although - since times changes it would appear to be 2 hours and 42 minutes on a physical clock, but it's only 1:42 on our circadian clock. -- my times are reported at Central Time. Also note - sunset doesn't mean it's dark by any stretch The further north of the equator, the later true night comes.
