wildfires? A weird haze is hanging over everything, and my chest feels heavy. I guess I'll be staying inside today. If I feel this bad, I can't imagine what it's like for those who live closer.

Yes, I’m about an hour north of New York City and it’s bad here.

Yup. They cancelled all outdoor activities at my kid's school…but not before they had to call an ambulance for a classmate during outdoor gym class this morning.
I’m in the waiting room at the orthodontist and everyone who comes in has the same conversation with the receptionist about the smoke.

We get it out here almost every summer (Seattle) so I feel badly for this affected. Make sure to close your windows, turn off the fans if you can, and wear a mask if it’s really bothersome. It can get really nasty.
ETA: originally said the word ac when I meant fan. has now been corrected for clarity.

Accuweather.com has a link called "Health & Activities" that shows respiratory air quality for people with asthma, as well as air quality & any current alerts for your region.
For my area (East of Washington, DC near the Chesapeake Bay) today, it shows Likelihood of Asthma as High, Dust and Dander as High, Air Quality as Poor, and a State Air Quality Alert in effect until midnight. It is bad.

Currently, Nova Scotia only has one out of control, 4 are under control. Quebec has 160 fires, most are out of control. Alberta is down to 57 fires. BC has 76 fires and one NE of Fort St John is the second largest fire in BC history. Saskatchewan 23 fires. 51 in Ontario. 12 in New Brunswick. No wonder so many are getting the smoke.
Even with a big one SE and the BC one NW of here, each only a few hundred kilometers away and it's always windy here we've been clear here for awhile. Fingers crossed it stays.

Air quality has just gone from Poor to Unhealthy.
That means that some members of the general public may begin to experience health effects, in addition to sensitive groups.

Could that be affecting us way down here in Texas? I just received an air quality alert, and I can’t even remember the last time that happened.

I feel for everyone affected by the bad air! We get it in the Western US just about every year from wildfires. Where I live in Utah there are some winters where the inversion is so bad that the AQI is over 200, which into the Very Unhealthy range. Stay indoors if you can and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. My 84 year old FIL (who is in extremely good shape for his age) just spent his first winter in Utah. Against our advice he went out for a 3 1/2 mile walk a few months ago during a bad air quality day. The bad air affected him enough that it aggravated his A-Fib and he ended up having to go to the ER. Take any air quality alerts seriously, especially if you have health conditions that could be exacerbated by the bad air!

Miserable here in Western CT. I'm surprised they let the kids go out for recess - not only is the air thick, it's creepy as hell.

Yup, I'm in Manhattan and the air is thick and definitely has the familiar orange haze of wildfire smoke. I've walked about 4 miles today and I can feel it in my lungs. Yuck.

A couple weeks ago it was really thick here in Iowa.
Air quality alerts almost every day. Makes for some amazing sunrise and sunsets though.
