At Walmart paying for my groceries and a person saw my badge in my wallet. The guy behind me says to me, "hey look, it's a racist piece of shit. Are you going to shoot me bitch?" I just said, "No sir, you have a Merry Christmas", as I pay for my things and walk away...interesting world we live in.

He would have called me bitch there would be hell to pay. I've called 911 when someone has cursed at me in public,in a parking lot because of my " protect the protectors" window sticker. It's against the law and the judge saw it as communicating threats. Target has the BEST security system & security team. People are just ingorant. Little bit of a rant...again he is late, over the past two weeks he has not stepped in on time. We have tried to go downtown to take the kids to see the lights and everytime we do he gets called in or ends up being late. Of course those that make our family miss things don't appreciate what he and us are missing. I know people think that's selfish, bUT just one more things we give up for our community. Rant over...

Here's some "reform" I thought of last night as I was watching our local news, giving a background of the NYC cop killer while he was here in Atlanta. This guy was arrested 19 times. NINETEEN. I know we cannot build enough prisons to house these repeat offenders, but something has to be done for someone who has been arrested NINETEEN times. There is no excuse for that nonsense. I know Eric Garner was also arrested a crazy amount of times. If someone cares so little about our laws and justice system that they're going to be arrested NINETEEN times, clearly they should not be permitted to live amongst those that choose to NOT commit crimes and be arrested time and time and time and time and time and time again. I think if we begin to get really serious with criminals, they'd consider thinking about making positive changes in their lives and make the decision to NOT commit crimes and risk arrest.
They get arrested that many times because the jails are overcrowded and don't have the funding to keep them. Many people would be surprised at how many criminals are not in jail and living among us.

what I don't understand is why being upset at the actions of a few bad cops is greeted with such disbelief and outrage by some folks-especially those in LE. Because the cops they are upset with, outraged over and calling bad cops - are not.

Come on ladies lets talk reform...Do we push for judicial reform, LEO reform, tougher sentencing for repeat offenders, more intervention for youth, more LEO, more training, national hiring standards....what we all know the system is flawed, how do we begin. Some standards from our department that astounded us: *Reading comprehension: Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 80 % to advance in selection process. Really...only 80 *No minimum college degree *Background investigation indicates a less than acceptable job performance with past employers. We talked last night over dinner, some thoughts from a group of about 15 LEO & their families...from guys with 20+ years to guys who have just started patrol. We are a Sheriffs department, so run a jail & the county courthouse. N.C has no unions and work at the pleasure of the sheriff, means he can fire you for ANY reason. So the training here might differ from other departments. The overwhelming response was the same...National standards for PD's, SO/ SD & State Police. 1) Raise the minimum age for patrol to 24. They all gave reason and hell 2 of the guys just turned 24. They all felt it was OK to keep the age at 21 for the jail & courts, but for anything patrol related 24. 2) A four year degree or 4 years of military service for any division in LEO. 3) Work a year in the jail, six moths front desk, six months in the courthouse & when you finish rotation then you can transfer to patrol/not before you reach 24 years of age. A minimum commitment of 18 months on patrol before transferring to specialized squads( ERT ,K-9, Detectives,Vice, SRO's & etc). 4) Patrol FTO should be a minimum of 6 months. 5) ALL patrol should do a round (2-3 weeks) at a mental health facility to see how to interact with mental subject and have mental health professions explain some common problems. 6) More than one week of mandatory in-service. With ore focus on mental health subjects, safety techniques, self defense & better communication with the public. 7) That after a certain amount of years higher up need to rise in rank or be demoted. The stagnate of having the same person in a leadership role who does nothing hurts the whole department. 8) Nationwide procedure for promotions, hiring & firings. So much more, but this is a good start. These are great ideas especially coming from the people working in this profession. I love the idea of raising the age for street patrol. I have learned in various classes/workshops that the young adult brain is not fully developed until they are 24-25 yrs old. I love the rotation between places/jobs. Dh works all over the jail, booking, work release, psych ward, court detail, etc.

Says who? How could you know this? Welcome new pea Foolana. The issue that started this firestorm involved Darren Wilson. Like it or not, physical evidence, forensic evidence, convenience store video and witness testimony back up his version of events. In the Eric Garner issue he also put himself in that position. These were not bad cops bored with their day and harassing an innocent citizen for kicks. They were doing their job, he was breaking the law -again, AND resisting arrest.

"some say we shouldn't judge unless we've walked a mile in a LEO's shoes-well, the same could be said for people of color who have been mistreated at the hands of LE. don't judge them, unless you've walked a mile in their shoes."
Hello, I wanted to address this point that was made. My husband has "walked a mile in worse shoes", he Is attacked, bitten, scratched, cut, bruised, stiched up,twisted an ankle, tweaked his knee, thrown out his shoulder & been exposed to god know what, just because of the uniform he wears. JMO... Happy Holidays

Your facts are your opinion @gialupea. I'm sorry. I know you believe them to be so but all of your points are completely debatable. What was Garner doing to break the law? He was not resisting arrest, he was trying to stop the cop from strangling him. How did trying to keep himself from being strangled put himself into that position? How was it the cop's job to murder somebody?

To LEOwife, did your husband know what being a police officer entailed when he applied for the job? It sounds like he's very unhappy at his job.

To LEOwife, did your husband know what being a police officer entailed when he applied for the job? It sounds like he's very unhappy at his job. It sounds to me like he goes above and beyond for the public. Why would someone who was unhappy with his job do all of that? I'm glad leowife has shared what her husband goes through, as well as herself and her family. It makes me appreciate law enforcement more.

My opinion is that your brand new account sounds awfully familiar to someone else who ignores actual facts and has her own version of facts on any given topic. Garner was breaking the law by selling untaxed cigarettes. A law he's familiar with because he's been arrested for it many times. He WAS resisting arrest, despite your insistence that he wasn't. The cop didn't forcefully try to get him to comply UNTIL he he resisted. Any semblance to an actual conversation goes out the window when you stoop to this level to prove your misinformed point. Just like the pea you sound an awful lot like does every time.

To LEOwife, did your husband know what being a police officer entailed when he applied for the job? It sounds like he's very unhappy at his job. That's an ingorant statement, my post have only been about all that he goes through each and EVERYDAY, he gets up and dose it over and over with compassion, pride and a belief he can make a diffrence. A diffrence through HIS actions, a diffrence through his traniees, a diffrence when he teaches LEO classes, a diffrence on a call, a diffrence when he volunteers, a diffrence when he acts... Without those that get up and go to their patrol car, to prepare for who knows what day in and day out, to serve and protect those in their community, who would answer when YOU call 911? Thank you ladies, be nice.... I've shared only a small portion of what our family has dealt with over the past 10 years. There is so much I have not shared. It might be on my end a little bit of complaining but more of a little peAK into what we go thourgh. I am proud of what my husband does, his kids are proud and our friends are. We are proud of our circle of friends who also serve and protect with honor and diginty. My husband love his carrer, why else would he put up with all he does if he didn't? I'll check in later... Enjoy your day.

LEOwife - I like a lot of your ideas for reform. The only one that I couldn't support would be the federalizing of the police force. These MUST stay at a state level, otherwise they would really just be another branch of our military and we don't want a militarized police force, nor if I remember correctly does the constitution allow for that.
A couple other suggestions that I personally think would make a difference, and I have long advocated for is the decriminalization of drug use (See Portugal) We have 5% of the worlds population but 25% of the worlds prison population significantly because of non-violent drug offenders. Regulate it, tax it, and only criminalize the unlicensed grow and distribution of it. Then take the money we save on prisons for these offenders and pay for voluntary rehab. 1)It takes the risk of jail away from those who would maybe otherwise seek help, 2)provides a solution for those who want out, but cant afford rehab 3)Starves the gangs, mafia and drug cartels of vital income, thereby crippling them financially.
I would also legalize prostitution. 1)It's a person's body, it's their choice what they do with it. 2)Again it starves gangs and mafia of income. Regulate it, tax it, but there really is not a good reason for it to be a crime.
Spend the money saved on community revitalization projects that increase education, enrichment programs, vocational studies and job training in poverty stricken neighborhoods. Given them an ownership of their neighborhoods. A reason to fight for the safety and protection of their neighborhoods.

Hello all, Sorry I SPENT THE DAY WITH MY FSMILY YESTERDAY. It was the first time he has had off Christmas in 8 years.
As for the ideas on reform... the thought on the age for patrol is at 21 you are still young, you really don't have much "real life experince", use that time to familiarize yourself with the rest of the departments functions. They weren't saying you couldn't be hired, they were just saying Patrol is not the spot for someone under the age of 24. As for pay it most definitely needs to be raised, no doubt about it. All the other ideas will most definitely be discussed in our group when we meet later in the month. Keep them coming as we are always interested in hearing suggestions.
