Im a grown adult whom has been to my share of LEO furenals, close calls, bruised, injured & hospitalized LEO officers (my own has been bruised, cut & had several close calls). We will honor our fallen brothers by opening a disscussion, as not to discuss is to codon our countries actions.
“I’m Putting Wings On Pigs Today. They Take 1 Of Ours...Let’s Take 2 of Theirs ... This May Be My Final Post...I’m Putting Pigs In A Blanket.” Brinsley wrote, with the hashtags #ShootThePolice #RIPErivGarner #RIPMike Brown.
How is this statement not fueld by the idioliziation of a criminal? Our president sent representation to Michael Browns Funeral. I know there have been many LEO deaths throughout the years & many presidents whom did not send representatives, my point is our cureent Presidents made a statement by sending representation, not past Presidents but this one.
Our AG has publicly stated that we need reform regarding our law enforcement officers. The reform we need is more money for LEO budgets, more officers on the street, funding for additional LEO training, better mental health care, rspect taught for LEO and a judicial system that does not run like revolving door.
Yes we all know they chose this profession, but if they didn't who would? Who would leave their families every morning knowing what they know each day?
Last 12 hour shift my husband worked he answered 2 domestics, one dead body,2 car accdients (deaths involoved), escort for DSS for removal of abused children (thank goodness he has a kid bag in his car), 1 rape, 2 commitment orders, 1 fight, 4 stranded motorists , countless security and check welfare calls & to close out his night 2 drunk drivers.
But my favorite was during his 20 minute lull he was eating a slice of pizza and these two kids 4 & 6 were mesmerized by him. On his way out he asked if they wanted to see his car, for the next 10 minutes he let them play with the sirens, talk on the megaphone, explore his car & take pictures. This usally happens every shift. When he was asked by his trainee why he does it, he stated because if I can show them at a young age that we are the good guys who want to help them, it might make a diffrence in their life later towards us.
It's pitful that LEO know that they are hated because of the actions of a few bad apples. Our country needs to stand up and say enough is enough, support our LEO & honor those that serve and protect.
I know everyone has an opinion ,a say, belifs of right and wrong, honor & disrespect...but please you use your brain when posting. Think before you post ...we are all adults...be civil.

:yourock:Well written post! My DH is a retired LEO and honestly, I'm glad we didn't meet until after he was done. The world view of police these days scares me. We should focus on the 99% of the wonderful ones out there instead of the 1% that we see in the news.

I don't think the either/or is helpful nor is the pro-police vs. anti-police stance that seems to be the new meme. I'm horrified about what happened to Michael Brown and Eric Garner and I'm horrified about what happened to these police officers. Life isn't lived in sound bites. I can both honor and respect law enforcement and still believe that the culture that allows the few bad apples to hide their actions and get away with bad deeds needs to change. I can simultaneously believe that one should not commit a petty crime and be killed because of it. I can simultaneously believe that most police officers are good people out to help the community while recognizing that there are some people in uniform that do not have those motives and should not have that kind of power. Not talking about the bad apples isn't going to make people's anger about these issues go away and it's not President Obama's or Bill DeBlasio's fault that anger exists in the first place. It would be a whole lot better if people on BOTH sides of the issue quit with the soundbites and simplistic "pro vs. anti" mindset and actually listened to each other because BOTH sides have legitimate concerns.

THe issue is very simple SaraH. Stop waving around dead criminals as martyrs for a cause. They were not good men. These officers were good men. When we men on put on par with heroic officers, that makes my stomach churn.
Is there some oversight that can be changed. Yes. But until we change the culture in our inner cities, we aren't going to change anything permanently. Education and employment programs will help. There is a lot we can do, but until I see the other side doing as much to stop the violence in their communities as they do in these protests, i really have a hard time respecting their position as anything but racially based.

What you fail to mention and that is crux to the situation(s) with Michael Brown et al. Is that THEY and only THEY chose to act in the manner that they did which destined their fate. When is charging at an officer and trying to disarm home a "petty crime" ?Just in case you don't know, ITS NOT. The cigarette guy in New York, fought/resisted officers--how on Earth are the officers supposed to know that he was what, asthmatic? This wasn't the first time that this guy was asked to stop selling. Just two examples--these criminals where not sought out because of the color of their skin, others called and asked for police to intervene. The 2 police officers in NY yesterday? Now THEY were targeted because of who and what they were and murdered for it. When are people no matter what their color going to stop blaming others for their stupid actions and take responsibility for their part in what happens? The people you mention were far from innocent.

YES!!!! THIS!!!! EXACTLY 1,000,000 times over!!! I have a very hard time too mustering any respect or support for these protests. I listened to a bunch of ignorant people speak yesterday about the protests in Cleveland, trying to justify their reasons. They were ignorant and irresponsible in their remarks and did nothing for their cause/message except put it back ages. The police officer who addressed them was excellent in his responses and demeanor.

Hi I think it's the mindset that is instilled which leads to the hate and disrespect. My husband can't stand the bad apples & with each incident it becomes a teaching lesson. Our department has had several firings from excessive force, drunk driving, abuse of power & adultry. Each one becomes a disscussion and a teachable moment, which he uses when training & amongst fellow officers to open up a disscussion. For example the Michael Brown he tried to get the officers gun...why to hand it back to him...not to shoot him and kill him. Why is his death idiolized? Why does our current goverment feel the need to step in, they are not opening a disscussion but undermining LEO. Gun control is not going to help, criminal do not follow rules. Stand up and have a disscussion, apperceive those that choose to serve and protect, not those that choose to be a criminal. Remember that every tree has bad apples, but those few should not be allowed to ruin the whole bunch.

No, he was not however he did not follow the orders of the officer, he was waving what appeared to be a real gun, and when approached and told multiple times to put his hands up, he disobeyed and put his hands at his waistband where the gun was. Officers have seconds to make decisions and the outcome for this was unfortunate. The officers did not know that the boy was 12 yrs old (he does look older by every photo shown), they were called because of a report that a man was waving a gun around in a public park. When is the culture amongst young men, kids, thinking that guns are cool, the thug life is cool, going to change? now there is something to protest about! When is disobeying/not complying/doing opposite of what the officers order going to stop? In each of these cases, if the people would have complied the outcomes would have been different.

Hi, You are right and wrong in a way, he chose to carry a "gun" he chose to " going armed to the terror of the public". While there are rights to bear arms, it's not a right to terrorize the public and those that now and respect gun laws know the diffrence and respect the law. Can you tell the diffrence between a real gun and fake? Rice was pointing and waving a gun.LEO told him to drop the weapon and he chose to raise it at LEO. 12 year Olds can kill. Why did this 12 year old choose to carry around a "gun"? Why did he choose to wave it in a public place? Why did he choose to not follow lawful commands? Why did he choose to raise the "gun" at LEO? ---------------------------------------- Regardless when you willingly break the law and become a dangers, there will consequences. Choose to not break law.

LEOwife, what would this country be without men (and women) like your husband who risk their lives serving and protecting. I appreciate it so much, and will never be able to comprehend the bs - at times life threatening - that he must put up with day in and day out. The way Michael Brown and Eric Gardner are being held up as martyrs by the leaders of this country sickens me, and the fact that those violently "peaceful" protests are being seen as a right is horrifying. I don't live that far from Ferguson, and the way that mob destroyed the town and the businesses of everyone in their path is disgusting, and did nothing to help their cause.

This, 100000000000000 times this. It's called personal responsibility. The men referenced were criminals, engaging in criminal activity. Shame on anyone who puts these thugs on par with the brave men who stand against them.
OP, thank you. My late husband was an officer. I couldn't have said it any better. May your husband be safe.
Prayers for all LEO in this very difficult time. Kat

But the majority of the protests out there have been for Michael Brown, Eric Garner, two men who have a criminal history. The 12 year old in Cleveland was a tragic decision. When the protests against police actions are for truly innocent people, then I'll get behind them. All the protests I've seen have been for these two men, men with proven criminal history.

Leowife, please thank your dear husband for his selfless service and going above and beyond by doing so much to train other officers and helping children see law enforcement as friends, not the enemy.
Our society no longer teaches respect for authority or responsibility for ones actions. Blame everyone but yourself. Everyone makes excuses for their behaviour... well, he was only doing ________. I was just speeding because _______.
These recent situations are extremely tragic. There are bad law enforcement officers, but they are not the majority. All these cases we're having the luxury of dissecting with videos, all the facts, and plenty of time have one common element. All the people involved resisted arrest. The police don't know their true intentions. All they know is that they are at their most vulnerable. They're not just protecting themselves. They're concerned about what will happen if the suspect gets their gun or cruiser. How many innocent civilians will be injured or killed? Will these officers get to go home to their families? Resisting only makes you look guilty.
Selling bootleg cigarettes doesn't sound like a big deal. After 9/11, ATF discovered that terrorists were selling bootleg cigarettes in the US to fund their organization. The police don't know if you're involved in terrorism or are just trying to make a quick but illegal buck. This wasn't the first time this suspect was arrested for this crime. He resisted. The fact that he died is horribly tragic, but he could have made better choices, like not continuing to sell bootleg cigarettes. The police don't know if this suspect is the one that is going to grab their gun and go on a killing spree. I am praying for the families of all of the people involved in these tragic situations. I am so upset about these NYC police officers and their families as well as the family of the gunman and his late girlfriend. How horrible for everyone involved.

My heart is hurting so for the families of the murdered officers. They are in my thoughts and prayers!
Every police officer will be getting extra prayers said on their behalf as well. My thoughts & prayers will be with them & their families, especially for the foreseeable future.
And finally, I stand with everything Jonda said, as well as leoswife.

Holy cow. Where do you live In a densley populated area that is home to two colleges & several beach communites. With 2 major corridors that feed into other major cities.Sorry that's as detailed as I feel comfortable with. Now that might not be an average night, but it's pretty damn close. They have been running short so instead of having a full squad sometimes he has to cover two sectors.

It might not be the popular opinion but actions speak. How many LEO furenals has our current president had people go to representing him? But send some to a criminals furenal, who was trying to kill a police officer. I tell my kids sometimes actions speak louder than words. __________________________________________ The president did, however, send three White House aides on Monday to attend the funeral for Michael Brown, the 18-year-old black male who was fatally shot by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri,"- CNS News So an African American criminal deserves the presdients attention. Actions can show a person true beliefs. My own opioin.

I don't know what moral issues the President teaches his children or intends to convey to the country, but I assure you that the moral issues that I taught involved don't rob a store, do drugs, and charge a police officer.

I can simultaneously believe that one should not commit a petty crime and be killed because of it. Neither Michael Brown or Eric Garner were killed because they committed a petty crime. You and others that do it it need to stop perpetuating this myth. It's what fuels the hate for the police.
