link to THE IP FB Group. I forgot one of the best things about an Instant Pot/Electric Cooker - dried beans!! One of my sons loves rice and beans as snacking food. As soon as he finished his sandwich for lunch he wanted a bowl of rice and beans. I went to the cupboard and found one last can of beans and was able to make his second course. I then got the IP out, rinsed a pound dried black beans, poured them in the pot, added a diced red onion, two diced slices of bacon, a carton of beef stock, a tablespoon of Arizona Dreaming seasoning (Mexican seasoning from Penzeys), salt, and some freeze dried jalapeños (fresh would have been better, but I don't have any). I set it for high pressure for 30 minutes and then will let it do natural release. So, a large pot of seasoned black beans in an hour from dried beans without any soaking. Adding this to my list. Here is the finished pic:

It is a pressure cooker but so much safer and easier than old pressure cookers. It's also a slow cooker, yogurt maker, and you can saute in it. I have got to go to the eye doctor--I read "saute" as "salute" and I got this instant image of all the Peas standing in a row, saluting their pots. SaveDon't feel bad because I read it as salute too.

Adding this to my list. Here is the finished pic: Yum! I just added dry beans to my grocery list. I never buy them because they take too long to cook (the regular way, without IP). I didn't even consider them after I saw that the manual/recipe book that came with the pot says to soak them. ugh. Well, I've discovered that that recipe book is fairly useless anyway so I ditched it. I'm taking your advice on beans since you cook them.

Okay. After listening to all the raves and positive recommendations about this thing for the past year or so, and talking myself into and out of it, I finally caved and it's now in my Amazon cart. You gals are such enablers!! I do have a question, elaine - are there any accessories I should be considering... glass lid, extra inner pot, etc.? Also maybe a bundt pan. Bundt pan like this one. I can hear you saying "but I don't want to make bundt cake." Yeah same... I've never made a bundt cake in my life. lol. However -- in this handy little pan I have made banana bread, pumpkin bread, cinnamon swirl bread, and we're going to try brownies next. I've just been using a boxed mix because I'm not about to mix all those ingredients from scratch. The only down side I see to this lovely pan is that I'm eating more quick breads than I ever have! lol Off to the gym I go!

marianne the flexitol is amazing stuff. My heels are soft like buttah. The gloves however, saw the inside of the trash bin months ago! I find that rubber gloves and a toothbrush are all you need!!!

Or just because we can? Well I'm sure it uses less energy. But even more than that, for me it's not having to heat up the oven. Our AC is already working overtime and I hate to negate all its efforts. And it's SO much easier (for me) in the IP. Stick it in, go away, come back and there it is. No worries about burning it, no having to check every once in awhile. And probably a bit of "because we can" thrown in there.

elaine - okay, I lied... I have another question. Do I need a steamer basket for this? After clicking the button and buying, I've been browsing around getting more information on pressure cooking, and keep coming across people using a steamer basket in the instant pot. Is it necessary?

Not Elaine -- obviously -- but, so far I've only used my accordion-type steamer... the kind that sits in an ordinary pot on the stove to steam vegetables. I've used that many times -- it keeps whatever you're cooking up out of the water at the bottom. I used it for hard-boiled eggs, and sweet potatoes, and cut up potatoes and carrots. However...someone just gave me a $50 gift card to Amazon, so I'll be watching here to see what Elaine says about the basket. lol. Thanks to this thread I've added the tongs (wish I'd gotten them sooner) and the cheesecake pan. lol

I've been wanting a yogurt maker, maybe I want an InstaPot? Yes! It is so much easier than a standard yogurt maker since you don't need a separate pot for heating the milk to 180 before then pouring it into something else to ferment/culture. I make a gallon of milk's worth of yogurt (it is 1/2 gallon of yogurt after I strain it to make it Greek yogurt) per week. I just did it yesterday, as a matter of fact, because I used up last week's making a batch of Sour Cream Banana Bread - substituting my yogurt for the sour cream. 6 qt is the perfect size. Oooh, thanks

I've been wanting a yogurt maker, maybe I want an InstaPot? Well, I have a tiny kitchen so I'm always trying to cut down on appliances. I'd think that buying one appliance that can do many different things would be better than buying a one-task yogurt maker. I've never made yogurt in the pressure cooker, not yet anyway, but everyone who does says it's easy and excellent quality. Agreed

The plain metal type steamer that Monklady uses is what I use too. The kind that is like an upside down umbrella. It is perfect. One of the best things about the Instant Pot is the plain stainless steel pot - no nonstick coating - so that you can put anything in it and not worry about scratching anything. You can also scour it if you want to.

Oh, don't worry! I know that many have a love-hate relationship with my enabling - I own it. The electric pressure cooker is the one thing though, hands down, that I have no qualms about enabling people to buy. Unlike many appliances, it actually does do a number of things - rice, searing, pressure cooking, steaming, yogurt making - and does them all really well. And honestly, at $119, it is quite a bargain. I have yet to have anyone who has bought one and tried at least three things in it come back and told me they regretted the purchase.

monklady123 it's your fault. I have no business making brownies tonight. We are going away for the weekend. But I thought why not? Somehow I stayed up too late. And ended up with an insanely good chocolate lava cake. If only I had vanilla ice cream!

Not to hijack the thread... But do you all have a favorite website for a little instant pot 101 and basic/beginner recipes? Is there a one stop shop for info? I am not on Facebook or Pinterest (with no plans to change that). I did a Google search last night and just turned up a lot of random bits and pieces on general mommy blogs (for lack of a better term). I feel like I am going to end up wasting any time saved with the pot itself by spending tons of time online trying to find recipes and such. Being late to the party on this one, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to get up to speed with it all. Thanks! Amanda, the Craftsy Class is on sale today for $19.99 - it is called "Make the Most of Your Pressure Cooker."

DH cooks dinner most nights and I know that he's been getting bored with making the same stuff over and over. (And if I complain myself, he'll tell me I can cook instead! Ah, nooo.) Maybe I should get one of these just to switch things up. We do use our crock pot some, but more in the winter. It sounds like there are a lot of different things that can be made in the Instapot, and quickly too. I'm kind of liking that it can be used for things like brownies and cheesecake without turning on the oven... Hmm. Belated Father's Day gift? Anniversary present? And Prime Day is coming up in a few days too!

For those who have been following the threads, you'll know that monklady123 was a very hard sell on the Instant Pot. She deliberated and debated and then finally took a leap. Now I know if I wanted to pass the reins to someone else for the threads, and to answer questions, she could and would take over in an instant. (Pun intended)
