My drive to and from work has increased by close to an hour, so getting dinner ready quickly is getting to be much more important. It's just DH and me, but I want to start cooking better meals, but quickly. Is this what I need? I haven't been paying attention to the threads about these and pressure cookers. I tried a search and I get all kinds of stuff, but not what I am looking for.
So help a girl out and tell me what this is and what it does. Also pressure cookers scare the bejeezus out of me. (Probably related to a story my Mother told me about how theirs exploded in their kitchen.)

It is a pressure cooker but so much safer and easier than old pressure cookers. It's also a slow cooker, yogurt maker, and you can saute in it.
I was resistant for the same reasons but kept thinking about one. The day I decided I actually wanted one, I happened to see a brand new one in the box on our local Next Door message board. I snagged that thing so fast . . .
I use it several times a week and haven't pulled out my slow cooker once since I got it.

I'm hoping that's the case for me too--that my slow cooker goes into the deep cupboard!! My in laws dropped off a new 6 qt InstaPot to me on Sunday. I need to start reading instructions! |

I gave away all my slow cookers, except for my Ninja 4-1, and haven't missed them at all. Last night I made green beans in one and steamed sweet corn on the cob in the other and grilled hot dogs. Dinner was ready in 15 minutes! I have a gallon of yogurt in my 6 qt one fermenting right now. The Instant Pot also works as an awesome rice cooker - as good as my zojirushi. deshacrafts, if you click on my name and then click on "threads started" you will find all the weekly/bi-weekly pressure cooker threads. There are lots of great recipes and tips. |

I love my Instant Pot! There is a Facebook group for Instant Pot users, they share lots of great tips  and recipes, how tos. Its like a cult or something, haha. I'm really slow to buy a new gadget, I sit on it and mull over it endlessly because I don't like to bring another thing into the house that I won't use. I'd say hands down this is the best gadget I own, behind the Kitchen Aide, Cuisinart and my blender. Like Elaine said, it cooks rice as good (and quicker) than my fancy rice pot, replaced the slow cooker, it saves me time, clean up (no stove mess and pots and pans..everything in the pot!). I love mine. Go for it! |

You think you're being funny but this IS how I feel about my IP -- I'd stand up and salute its awesomeness in a heartbeat! OP -- I just made pasta, tomatoes, and sausage this evening. From start to finish it was about 15 minutes. Seriously. I used canned stewed tomatoes, the large size can. Put that in the pot, some Italian seasoning and garlic, dumped in 1 lb of dry pasta (I used bowties), poured in broth until the pasta was *just* covered, cut up some sausage (the precooked kind from Costco) and put that on top. High pressure for 3 minutes (because there's also some cooking time in the beginning while the pot is coming up to pressure). At the end of 3 minutes I released the pressure manually (it's not at all scary either, except for the first time, lol). Many people just serve straight from the pot but I switched it to another bowl because I didn't want it to keep cooking since dh and ds aren't home yet. The pasta is PERFECT. And it was SO EASY! Like I said, 15 minutes. And no big pot of boiling water to heat up my kitchen, no draining the pasta. SO easy. So EASY. SO EASY! lolol Elaine is the main enabler here. {waving to elaine) hehe I LOVE THIS COOKER! Did I mention how easy it is, and how much I love this IP?  |

Ok you guys have convinced me I NEED one & DH wants to buy for my birthday (in October , but he wants to buy it now so he doesn't forget. Lol )For the most part it is just DH & I (Although we do like & eat leftovers I'd like fewer of them as if it's only enough for one, I usually take to work the next day & I need to work in eating salads or something less caloric .) What size would you suggest? Which ip would you suggest?

This seems to be the most popular size too. Everyone on the Facebook group uses this one, or if they use a different brand they don't confess it. lol. Six-Quart Pressure Cooker
Oh, and they scared me too! Most of us of a certain age remember our mother's old pressure cooker sitting on top of the stove, making scary noises. I was always afraid ours would explode and wouldn't go in the kitchen when my mom was using it.  These new electric ones aren't like that though! Not at all. The only scary time I've had with mine was the very first time I ever did a quick release of the pressure (when you release it by hand rather than letting it drop down naturally). My dd took the dog and went into another room, and I hit the valve with a long spoon so I wouldn't have to stand too close. rofl. Now I do it without worrying. These new ones have a safety thing -- if the pressure built up too high (which it wouldn't because the temperature isn't being regulated by a variable burner, but just in case...) the seal inside the lid gives way and the food oozes out from under the lid rather than exploding on the ceiling. Personally I HATE to cook, as you might know if you've read my threads about cooking.  And I LOVE this pressure cooker. |

I'd think that buying one appliance that can do many different things would be better than buying a one-task yogurt maker. I've never made yogurt in the pressure cooker, not yet anyway, but everyone who does says it's easy and excellent quality. |

It is so much easier than a standard yogurt maker since you don't need a separate pot for heating the milk to 180 before then pouring it into something else to ferment/culture. I make a gallon of milk's worth of yogurt (it is 1/2 gallon of yogurt after I strain it to make it Greek yogurt) per week. I just did it yesterday, as a matter of fact, because I used up last week's making a batch of Sour Cream Banana Bread - substituting my yogurt for the sour cream. 6 qt is the perfect size. |

Many nights I actually have both going at once.  The bluetooth one calls to me - I love tech - but for now, I'm really more than happy with just the plain $119 model. |

Not to hijack the thread... But do you all have a favorite website for a little instant pot 101 and basic/beginner recipes? Is there a one stop shop for info? I am not on Facebook or Pinterest (with no plans to change that). I did a Google search last night and just turned up a lot of random bits and pieces on general mommy blogs (for lack of a better term). I feel like I am going to end up wasting any time saved with the pot itself by spending tons of time online trying to find recipes and such. Being late to the party on this one, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to get up to speed with it all. Thanks!

One of my sons loves rice and beans as snacking food. As soon as he finished his sandwich for lunch he wanted a bowl of rice and beans. I went to the cupboard and found one last can of beans and was able to make his second course. I then got the IP out, rinsed a pound dried black beans, poured them in the pot, added a diced red onion, two diced slices of bacon, a carton of beef stock, a tablespoon of Arizona Dreaming seasoning (Mexican seasoning from Penzeys), salt, and some freeze dried jalapeños (fresh would have been better, but I don't have any). I set it for high pressure for 30 minutes and then will let it do natural release. So, a large pot of seasoned black beans in an hour from dried beans without any soaking. |

They usually have sales so you could get it for $19.99. The guys who teach the class also have my favorite cookbook: Great Big Pressure Cooker Cookbook
when you Google just look for electric pressure cooker recipes - all electric pressure cooker recipes will work in any pressure cooker, unless they call for a special setting like "yogurt" that most machines don't have. |

I do have a question, elaine - are there any accessories I should be considering... glass lid, extra inner pot, etc. I wouldn't worry about a glass lid unless you will be using it as a slow cooker - you will find that most slow cooker recipes can be adapted for pressure cooking and take 1/8th the time. If you cook a lot of dishes for each meal, an extra pot would come in handy. You could prep the side dish to be ready to go in as soon as the main course is done and most veggie dishes are done in 10 minutes or less, so it works great to cook main course and immediately throw in the side. You need one of these to help easily remove the inner pot while hot. The best part is the instructions on the back. You must read them. If you are going to make cheesecake in it - and you MUST try it - You'll need a small pan like this one - either springform or with a removable bottom. |
