I just bought one from the Amazon Prime Day deal. With a gift card and reward points I got an awesome price on it. I have a slow cooker already but always wanted a pressure cooker. I think this will be a great way to try it out.

I just may have to buy one. . I couple of questions. I see brownies mentioned. Do they have the nice crunchy outside? If you can do brownies, can you do cake? Meats, do they have that boiled look/color to them, or do they get some color like they've been seared? Or do I need to sear them first before adding to the pot?

You sauté before cooking I believe. There is a cookbook with 101 recipes that you can buy for it.

You brown the meat in the pot on the sauté function before pressure cooking it. Some recipes call for a quick trip under the broiler after the meat has been pressure cooked for browning/crisping. brownies and cakes do not get brown - you will get moist, but not crunchy - a pressure cooker doesn't cook in a way that leads to crunch. You can brown the top of your cakes and quick breads by a few minutes under the broiler like meats.

I remember my grandmother had the old fashioned one 100 years ago and the color of the meat from that one was gross. Thanks for the info on the cakes/brownies.

I signed up for the 30 day free Prime trail. Prime with their fast shipping is a bit of a joke since most stuff doesn't make it to rural nowhere in the amount of time they say. The Pot 'said' it would be here in 2 days but the tongs I ordered said they would be here in August sometime.

What size InstaPot do you have and why? I am leaning towards the 8 qt because I already have a six qt crockpot and I think it is too small. I have both an 8 quart and a 6 quart. If you want to make large pots of soup, stock, or chili, go as large as you can. You can still cook 1 cup in an 8 quart pressure cooker (it is different than a slow cooker), but you can't fill a pressure cooker more than 3/4 full or the vents, etc., won't work. I use the 8 quart for soup, chili and ribs, because with my family, I have to make 2 full racks at a time. Thanks Elaine! Especially about the tip that I can still cook smaller amounts in the large pressure cooker. Even though the 6 qt is a great deal today, I think I will save my $ for the 8 qt.

The bigger question here is where did you buy pork for that price? Walmart. I have become quite the shopper for relatively cheap meat on sale. With meat prices skyrocketing in the past couple of years, I buy bonus/family packs for the savings and will buy whatever is on sale if I can figure out something to make with it. I also bought a 2-pack of whole chickens at $0.97 per pound there to make on my rotisserie. With 2 teenage boys I have to cook 2 whole chickens at a time - 1 isn't enough - but that way I can make awesome chicken stock in my large Instant Pot and have leftover meat for chicken soup. dang, I have NO BUSINESS buying any kind of kitchen appliance, but man, you guys make it tough!! I would love to use my slow cooker more, but it takes too darn long, and I don't want to leave it on during the day when the cats are home and can get into trouble. But with the instant pot, you say I can cook anything in the instant pot that I would otherwise cook in a slow cooker?? And elaine, things like those black beans that you gave directions for... is there any way things like that can be frozen to cook in bulk for later, since there's just two of us?? (or canned, I suppose, but still, the thought of it scares me...) Once I'm finally at my goal weight, I'm going to have to cook a LOT more than I ever used to, and maybe this appliance would make it easiser (and quicker) so I wouldn't feel so ambivalent about cooking healthy foods at home?? (Please, please, please tell me the answer is yes!!) I'm not even an Amazon Prime member, but this thread, all by itself, has almost convinced me to get a trial membership JUST so I can get the Instant Pot, darn it!!!

I'm not even an Amazon Prime member, but this thread, all by itself, has almost convinced me to get a trial membership JUST so I can get the Instant Pot, darn it!!! You could cook up a big pot of beans and then freeze some - they would be mushier, but that isn't a bad thing with beans. I make huge pots of chili, and fresh soups and put most in individual Tupperware containers and freeze them for lunches. I love making fresh asparagus soup, or a double celery that uses both celery and celery root, or vegetable beef and barley. It is done in an hour - the longest part is chopping veggies - and tastes so much better than canned soup - which I've stopped buying. I froze 4 of the 5 quarts of chicken stock I made last night and will use them in making fresh soups. The chickens I used to make them were $10 - we ate the chicken for dinner - and then I got more then $10 worth of chicken stock from the carcasses and leftover meat. I pour and store the stock in mason jars. They freeze well.

I don't have an InstaPot (yet), but I second what Elaine said about freezing beans and chicken stock. That's what I do now with the beans and chicken stock I make in my crockpot. It sounds like cooking these will be even easier in the InstaPot.

I did it!!! I am now a brand new Amazon Prime member, anxiously awaiting delivery of my shiny new Insta Pot, handle, spare pot, and two cookbooks (one is out of stock right now, though)... the estimated delivery is Friday, July 15th!! (we'll see if that holds true...) <--- this will be my BF's face when I tell him about it... or maybe this: , or even this: or this: But hopefully it will change to one of these: if I actually start cooking (better, home-cooked food) more often!

So DH caved and agreed that we could get one. he doesn't want me to sign up for prime though. We had an. Issue before with Amazon.ca being hacked so we don't like to have our cc left on the account. We just enter each time.
DH said he would take me to Best Buy later in the week to get one. They are the same price as Amazon anyway.
