So shocked and sad. I will miss the smiles he brought to so many. If he was to be on a show, I would make sure to watch. It will be a little sadder world without him.

I am not surprised. It was the first thing I thought of when I heard he had died. Seems like comedians are tortured souls - from Freddie Prinz to Chris Farley.

I saw it on a sidebar on Facebook and immediately checked Google News to verify. How very sad. He had such great talent.

He has struggled with addiction most of his life. I wish more could be done for those with addiction. The world just doesn't seem to care some times.

My breath totally caught in my chest when I read that. How incredibly sad. He was an actor that I never tired of watching....

He was just back at Hazelden in MN for treatment again this summer. He was obviously struggling greatly again.

I just said to my husband and 9 year old son that I would like to watch Patch Adams. He was perfection in that movie!!
The world lost a truly gifted actor. May his family find comfort and peace in the days ahead.

So sad to hear this. It must have been a hard role to fill. I am sure he had many "highs and lows" and it was hard to deal with.

I gasped when I saw the headline on Yahoo! news. He will be missed. I had the same reaction reading this thread We just watched RV this weekend. No not one of his best, but it has many things we can relate to. And we really enjoyed him. Mrs Doubtfire, Good Morning Vietnam and Jumanji are some of my favorites of his.

I, and many others in high school marching band in the late 70s, had my Mork rainbow suspenders.

This is so very sad. I did not care for him as an actor, but still it is horrible that someone's life is so tormented. I feel so bad for his family.

If any of you haven't seen The Fisher King, please watch it. It is NOT a comedy and is about mental illness, and I would argue his best acting job. There are other roles I enjoyed more, like Good Morning VietNam and a Dead Poets, but Fisher King is hie best work.

It really does hit home that depression is all encompassing and painful. It's nothing to take lightly and even the most successful, cheerful person can be suffering greatly.
