Car dealerships are closed here on Sundays as well. I always thought it had something to do with banks and financing.

On a side note, it's a law in Wisconsin that car/motorcycle dealerships are closed on Sundays. "Blue laws" are state statutes that prohibit certain business activities on Sundays to preserve the religious nature of the day. Some states also restrict the sale of alcohol on Sundays. This isn't a business choice, but the law. I'm not saying if it's right, wrong or archaic, however most are still in business despite a mandatory Sunday closure.Funny, we just learned about Texas Blue Laws today, after living here eight years. DH is in the market for a new car, and today was the first day we've had a full day to go car shopping, but nothing's open! So frustrating. I'm not a HL shopper either, so they don't get my money anyway. When I did shop there, though, I often wondered how much money they lost with their 40% coupons. (the quote feature is messing up for me) The coupon is only good for one item. It gets you in the door and you spend full price for the rest of your items.

I wonder if that is what some of these people who resell new, more expensive craft items on eBay and Etsy do. I don't know or really care, I'm just wondering .

You're welcome to believe that. Given that the original incident happened in metropolitan New Jersey, an area with a sizable Jewish population, I find it incredibly odd that they carried no Jewish items whatsoever, despite the dubious quote above about products being stocked for demand. However, HL headquarters, where they make decisions for what all the stores will carry, are located in Oklahoma which has an almost non-existent Jewish presence in the state (less then 5,000 state wide or .1% of the state population www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/US-Israel/usjewpop.html ) It isn't going to cross their minds it might be worthwhile to carry in selected stores because they don't use a "selected store" business model. I'm not sure that is accurate, because I know for a fact that the stores in Texas carry almost a full aisle of homecoming mum supplies and you would be hard pressed to find any sort of thing in a Hobby Lobby store in Illinois.

That's exactly what I was talking about. Besides the vile: " We don't cater to you people," after the customer asked if they carried bar mitzvah cards, Berwitz followed up and talked to management, just in case this was a nasty, ignorant sales associate. It wasn't. This was company policy. The official statement why Hobby Lobby didn't carry Jewish items: "" Because Mr. Green is the owner of the company, he's a Christian, and those are his values." My values are to shop elsewhere. Whatever that nasty sales associate said is deplorable. I'm sorry, but I have no issue with a store choosing to carry whatever it wants to carry, or not carry. If that store doesn't have something I need, I'll go elsewhere. Being rude and nasty to anyone of any religion, race, etc would cost my business quick no matter how much I loved that store. Based on what you stated above, the only issue I have is with the the nasty associate and how the customer was treated. There are plenty of other places that carry Jewish items, Muslim items, etc. But yes, some continue to crucify the Christian based stores. Where's the thread about pork based company Bob Evans not catering to Muslims? Oh right...there isn't one. I have been confused by this whole issue for awhile now. My local HL does have Jewish items, more around Hanukkah. They have for as long as they've been here and I don't think we have an unusually large Jewish population in our area. Last year when this article was published, my DH was quoting it and didn't believe that HL does carry Jewish items until I took him to see it with his own eyes. It was an admittedly small section, but that is true in most retail stores. He retracted his statements on social media. I don't like HL more or less than most other businesses. I believe like most other large companies, they make desicions based on their bottom line first. But, I do believe in accuracy of information. It is only fair.

I never pay full price for anything at HL. If it's not on sale, I wait a week or 2 until it is. If it's an item that doesn't go on sale, I use the coupon. You can use a coupon daily, and since HL is 5 minutes from my house, it's easy. And there I go again.... Compounding the problem...

I worked at HL when I was in college, and we were open on Sundays (I live in Texas, not everyone is closed on Sunday as the Blue Laws pretty much only apply to liquor stores and bars and even that varies by county). I was a department manager and all managers had to be there at 7:45 on Sundays to go over the new ad starting that day. At that time, the store didn't open till 9AM on Sundays, but we had to prep the store for the customers, and they would start lining up at 8-8:30 that morning to get in for the sales. At that time, they didn't offer any coupons, so unless you got there first thing, there was the potential to lose out on good deals as the trucks from headquarters usually didn't come again till later in the week.
We actually lost a couple of really great employees because they were told if they couldn't work all day on Sunday (they had church obligations). One lady was basically bullied into quitting ; she was the Sunday school teacher at her church and couldn't make it to work till 1PM. The manager basically harassed her and made her come in early shift the rest of the week (which was hard, since she had little kids to get off to school). She really loved working there and the customers loved her as she was very helpful and knew alot about her department (she ran the fabric area), but she and her husband couldn't work out the AM schedule and they decided it was best she go work elsewhere. I honestly hated working there, but it was the only place I could find that would fit with my work schedule, and I was a dumb college kid that would do whatever for a job because I needed it, so I basically took their crap. Management was horrible, the area managers and district managers were even worse.
Now, it just bemuses me to see how "Christian" they are and such, there certainly wasn't any of that when I worked there!
Edited to add since I started on a rant - Sundays were our biggest grossing sales day, so I am sure it has taken them some time to adjust for that. I think by adding the coupon, they probably actually get more people on Saturday that want to use the coupon before it expires.

There are definitely more times I've NOT shopped there because they are closed on Sundays than I HAVE shopped there. Saturdays and Sundays are the only days I have time to go out and do shopping like that. Most of the time Sunday is the day I go shopping, so that means I spend my money at Michael's and Joanns instead of Hobby Lobby.

I tell you what, I hate to travel in the are where the local big box stores are located on the weekend! I hate it now, and I hated it when I was working full time. When DH & I were working full time, we'd be out shopping at night on a weeknight to avoid shopping on the weekend. So I do everything in my power not to be near the Hobby lobby on a Sunday anyway.

Time once was that no matter how many family members worked, they all had Sunday off and could spend it together.
Times have changed, and now when multiple family members work, it is hard for everyone to get the same days off. I find it interesting how many people are grumpy about HL employees getting Sundays off. You have it off, why shouldn't they? Yes, it may inconvenience some folks who want to do their shopping on Sunday, but I personally find it refreshing to see a retail business that gives their employees Sunday off, so they can spend it with their family, or going to church, or whatever they want to do.
I have worked in retail. I had to be there on Sundays, when my DH and children were at home together. I wanted to be home with them, too, but I had no choice in the matter. I hated having to work on Sunday instead of being able to be with my family. My kids were in school all week. My DH was at work all week. When I worked retail, I had no time with them when they could be home. Getting a day off when no one in my family would be home wasn't going to make up for the time with them that I could have had if I'd had a day on the weekend to spend with them instead of working all weekend.
I no longer work retail, and hope I never have to again, but I wish there were more businesses that let their employees have Sunday (or Saturday) off to be with their families.

I choose not to shop there. There was a time when I would've shopped there if they were open on Sunday. Since they weren't, I went somewhere else. Now, I wouldn't go even if they were open on Sunday.

I would shop there occasionally on Sundays if the store was open. I would say 75% of my fun shopping is done on Sunday afternoon. I understand it is a business choice, and I'm fine with that, but I'm sure they are fine with losing my consumer dollars to the Michaels across the street. I am not going to just shop a different day.
Chick-fil-a definitely loses my business on Sundays. At least twice a month, one of us mentions a Diet Lemonade on a Sunday.

I love HL, and I love their store brand yarn.
I am considering going back to work, and HL is high on my list because of their pay and hours. (They close at 8, I can tuck my boy into bed if I have to work late!)
And as for all the other controversy, I understand. There are companies I choose not to buy from because of their stance on certain issues.

I just make sure to go there on Saturday. I think they must be doing fine. They stick to their values like several other stores in our town. It bugs me that I am inconvenienced, but it is certainly their right to do so. I wonder if they have lost money on their birth control stance.
Their great sales are what lure me in. I only have to wait two weeks or so for the thing I want to go on sale. Once Paper Studio started going 50% off on their little wooden veneer cut outs, I bought most of them. I buy almost everything at 40-50% off and HL is the best at so many things on sale at once. Michaels is more often buy two get one free or 30% off. Their specialty paper is $1.53 and HL's is very often $0.99. It does add up quickly. My LSS has very few sales of what I really want, but I shop there to help keep her in business. She has a much better selection.

I have to admit that it does bug me that they're not open on Sundays. I sometimes like to do things then and I am not a fan of Michaels. HL people have honestly always been so nice to me (strange since I have sooo many tattoos). But, I hate waiting forever to check out, the cash register is a joke, and I hate that they close at 8 instead of 9. The Lowe's here closes at 10 and I love that!!!

I think their antiquated POS and inventory system is the pits and politics aside, is one big reason why I don't shop there. They have actually upgraded ; when I worked there, the registers weren't computerized POS systems, they were basically giant calculators. We have to put price tags with a price gun on each item (after unwrapping every god-forsaken piece of crap that was wrapped in bubble wrap). Heaven forbid something make it to the register without a price tag, it would shut the whole line down :/ I would love to get the little old ladies that had 100 tiny shells and none had price tags , I would sometimes just say "Hey, I think these are on sale for 100 / $1.00, today is your lucky day!"..there was no way I was gonna price check those things and wait the 20 minutes it would take for a manager to come up the the register. I am surprised they never implemented the Sams Club receipt check at the door at HL! If they only knew how many times cashiers would just say "eh, no tag?" and charge someone a penny for something :/

I was recently in Europe and people were amazed that stores in North America didn't close at 4:00 pm on a Saturday or that the majority of stores were closed on Sundays. People couldn't understand the NEED, not the desire to have stores/shops open every single day. The 24/7/365 concept is very strange for me. I can schedule my errands around when a business is open (doctor, dentist, grocery store, etc.).
Enough on this topic from me. I tend to be more European in my thinking about family time and the absolute NEED (again not DESIRE) to have stores open every single day.
Just wanted to say that that attitude is not Europe wide. Depends on the country. In the UK and Ireland Sunday trading is common place. I just quickly picked a shop which is part of a craft chain here in the UK called Hobby Craft and their opening hours are
Opening hours Monday 09:00 - 19:00 Tuesday 09:00 - 19:00 Wednesday 09:00 - 19:00 Thursday 09:00 - 20:00 Friday 09:00 - 19:00 Saturday 09:00 - 18:00 Sunday 11:00 - 17:00
Those hours are fairly typical. Most supermarkets are open 24 hours Mon to Sat, with 11.00 - 17.00 on a Sunday. Laws restrict Sunday shopping to six hours.

Yes, once again that 'Europe' generalisation, as if 50+ independent, often vastly different countries act as one in terms of culture, laws etc etc

Too bad it's always the "poor retail" people with this sad story. Never mind nurses, doctors, people who work for utility companies, convenience store/gas station folks, shall I go on? Isn't that one obvious, though? It's a lot harder for the ER to be closed on Sunday than it is for Hobby lobby. People have heart attacks on Sundays, but they won't die if they can't buy yarn on Sundays. So HL has more of an option than the hospital when it comes to its scheduling. Gas stations could close on Sundays - some used to where I grew up - but seeing how many people travel on Sundays and holidays it is certainly a more necessary service than HL is. Not all businesses can close on Sundays. Some can, and choose to. That has benefits for the employees of those businesses. I'm grateful for the nurses that worked all day Sunday when my dad had his heart attack and when my daughter was born and and and. I know that's a sacrifice for them - one they make because it is a legitimate need. I also think it's perfectly reasonable for HL to close on Sundays. The two aren't really mutually exclusive.

Hobby Lobby is relatively new to NJ. My sister lives very near the store where the incident about "not catering to your people" occurred. My sister and many of her friends are active crafters- always making something for some reason or just to create. It is a heavily Jewish area. My sister and her friends drive further for their supplies, avoiding HL completely. It is also a liberal area, so the birth control stance bothered people that may have missed the religious controversy. I have to wonder how long HL will last there. Actually, same for 1 yr old store near me. I know many people that will not set foot in there.

When I still shopped at Hobby Lobby, they did lose money from me because we're usually only in the area where the store is on Sundays for soccer. I love their Christmas decorations so drove there a few times during the week but it's not the kind of store worth going out of my way for very often. Since the owners have since made it clear that they have no interest in my money, now they get none of it.
