Holy cow. I can't believe someone you've known and used for so long did this. It makes me wonder if she's done this in the past and has cleaned up your house before you came home. It also makes me wonder if she's on drugs.

I would definitely go ahead and file the police report after reading the full total of all the damage she wreaked.
I can see how you have come to trust this girl after having a good history with her. So weird that she went rogue so unexpectedly.

This is unbelievable and I think you need to file a police report immediately. I have the bad feeling you won't be getting those rings back. I hope I am wrong.
Like others, I believe she had a little party while you all were gone. Does she still have a key to your house or some other kind of access?

What a story! I was so hooked in I seriously needed to know more! I was thinking she couldn't do the job so she sort of subcontracted someone else to do it.I used to rescue domestic pet rabbits and hired someone who helped me sometimes to take care of them for a week by feeding them everyday, filling water bottles and then on Saturday clean their cages. Well we got home a day early and you never saw such a mess! Well maybe Merge just did, but she had done no cage cleaning, animals were out of their cages because doors were left open and an entire bale of hay was strewn from light fixture to wall socket all over the room. She just basically let the animals out, figured they would eat hay and all she had to do was fill some water bottles. Took me two days to clean it all and the damage the bunnies did to the walls and other items there has still never been repaired. Another time I hired a neighbor girl about 17 years old to take care of my bird. I came home to find the cage door open and the bird was upstairs clinging to a picture frame on the wall with a bald spot on her head. The teen said she flew out when she was putting the food in and she couldn't get her. My bird was like that for days. You can't trust people and sometimes boarding turns to shit too. We just do the very best we can by our pets. This is my thought as well. If she has always taken good care of the pets and left the house in good condition, this seems like a very, very strange turn of events.

It’s tomorrow-did she bring the rings back? What a horrible situation. I’m so sorry. Merge only posted this an hour ago and is at work. She won't be home until later and won't know the answer to that until then. Her quote: "I told her that I expect the rings in our mailbox by the time I get home today, or I'll be filing a police report to get them back." Oh how weird. When I was reading it on my phone, it said 23 hours ago. Or I'm a dodo and read "minutes" as "hours."

😫😫😫 I would be beyond livid. I am LIVID right now FOR YOU. I cannot even imagine! How old is this person? Your poor dogs! Have you checked your medicine cabinets? I would probably still file a police report on her. She stole from you, not just the rings, but also your daughter’s clothing. I would want to ensure this never happens again to some other unsuspecting person. That’s a lot of liquor to finish all by ones self. And with your house in such a state, did she throw a party? I believe so, but she denies it. And yes, to answer someone else's question, I think there is mental illness involved. Which is unfortunate. But doesn't excuse the behavior. Oh for sure, was just a though as to maybe why.

WOW! Just Wow! Police report and cameras (that you can monitor live) if you ever need to use a house sitter again. So sorry Merge.

Thanks all. I agree there was probably a party, and I also think she farmed out a couple of days to friends if she was busy or something came up.
I also suspect those rings aren't coming back.
DH feels like it's hard to show theft when you gave someone access to your home, and that the police won't be able to do anything about it. Who knows.

OMG what a nightmare for you. I'm so sorry. You are far more " forgiving" than I would be. I would have picked that phone up and reported her at a blink of an eyelid when I arrived home. How old is this girl?
I think you're blinded by saying there might be mental illness.....she's had a party and all got drunk and forgot the food they had taken out of the freezer. I wouldn't be surprised that the party was also pre planned given that she had given the house code to someone else. Or she's had a load of friends staying there or calling each day while you've been away Have you asked your neighbours if they noticed anything going on.
I hope you've re-keyed that door code and also checked that ALL the rest of your possession are still there. Very often even when someone has been burgled people miss noticing other less used things until such time that they want to use them/wear them. So double check everything.

WOW! Just Wow! Police report and cameras (that you can monitor live) if you ever need to use a house sitter again. So sorry Merge. One of the hinky things this time was that she had unplugged our internet almost the minute she walked in the door (it was down/unplugged when we got home and the app I use showed it had been down since the 10th). Strongly suspect she was worried that we could see or hear her somehow if there was internet to the house.

That's AWFUL!
Whether or not she keeps a key, I would have the locks changed because if she had a key and had someone else staying there, chances are she made a copy and it's still out there somewhere. Or at the very least, I would change the security alarm code if you have one.

Glad you got your rings back, but that sense of violation and neglect towards my animals would have me seeing red. I'd definitely file a police report.
ETA: I don't think she lost her mind. I think she's on drugs and your house became her place to party. No way was she there alone the whole time.
She hasnt stated if she got them back yet

Ugh. I am so, so sorry.

Yikes! That is my nightmare about having someone watch the pets. My dog HATES to be kenneled and it takes weeks for her to get back to normal after we do. Until a couple of months ago, my daughter had been available to help, so I didn't have to worry most of the time. Now, she's moved further away and that means kennel or pet sitter. Maybe a bonded pet service?
I really, really hope you get the rings back with their sentimental value.

This event needs to be on the record. If you had cameras and they went down you could have the police do a check on your property.

I'd definitely file a police report. If anything it keeps a record of what happened, and maybe its enough to scare her. I'm sorry that happened to you and the dogs.

Over my lifetime I have known a few drug addicts and drunks. Some will rob you blind to get money and others will suffer withdrawl before stealing from someone. There are drunks who can't hold a job and I've known a couple of drunks who never missed a day of work. It is not about whatever problems/addictions that someone has, it is about who that person is. This person who sat for Merge is a criminal. Period.

Merge - Do any of your neighbors have exterior security cameras? If so, you might check with them and see if they have any footage of your house that might show comings and goings during last week. That would be one good way to tell if there was a party. It would also be additional information you could share with police. I would definitely file a police report, if for no other reason but to have it on file about this girl. You are probably not the first, or last, person she has done this to.

Absolutely contact the police, and let them tell you what they can and can't take a report on. Also check all your meds and have the police check for evidence of drug use. Be sure to include the price of the meat and alcohol in the dollar figure you give them, as well as cost to rekey your locks. Check the car for drugs, too. So scary!

Omg, your poor dogs, I would be livid if my dog was left alone, stressed and ignored when I was paying over the top for the service. Give them big hugs from another dog owner.
Now, phone the Police, she may have form and they might just get another piece of a puzzle.
Change any key code, keys, and possibly car keys. Send her the bills.
I'm so livid for you and your pets, such a breach of trust.
