I'm late replying to this week's episode-just been very busy this week. I was so very glad that we not only got to see two challeges (a reward challenge and an immunity challenge-Yippee) but even better than that-we were spared the boring and waste of time of IOI! I was having so much fun watching this episode thinking to myself-Yes! This is why I love Survivor and how it should be. Thank God we get a break this week. I too have seen the snake in the sand challenge before on past seasons and it's very physically tough for players to get through. Janet did a fine job of it and Tom did too.Jeff's comments about them during the challenge (they were both tied together) were "Tom and Janet are staying in it inch by inch" Janet is 59 and Tom is 60. Karishma is only 37. Personally I cannot believe the lack of intelligence in the tribe in keeping Karishama and voting out Tom. She is the reason they lost both challenges. At this point in the game it's all about winning challenges. Yes, there are a lot of nuances to the game that will effect each player later but we are still in the early part of the game. Right now it's all about winning challenges, staying the heck away from tribal council and losing another tribe member. When they did the tribe swap each tribe had 8 members. The orange tribe ended up with a 5-3 tribe (5 old purple and 3 old orange) The purple tribe ended up with a 4-4 tribe-4 of each. The only thing I can think of that might have happened is that the tribe members from the original purple team didn't know Karishma very well and she was able to swindle them into thinking she was better than she was-but two things about this bother me-1. The original purple tribe members had the new orange tribe members to ask about Karishma and 2. More important they had 2 challenges-the reward and immunity challenge they'd done as a new team with Karishma on their team to judge her performance on-and she lost both of those challenges for them. Hey-if you as a tribe keep her in after that I'm sorry-you deserve to lose after that. I'm not going to feel sorry for you as a tribe after you make a huge mistake like that. From now on I'm rooting for the purple team. Jackie I did hear Jeff calling out Karishma for dragging her butt again and I heard her response "I am not Jeff!" I think he was hoping it would give her the push she needed mentally to dig down deep as he calls it and get it in gear. Sadly that didn't work. Part of me wonders if Karishma's heart is really in it when it comes to physical challenges. The reward challenge-is anyone else getting a bit tired of the obvious commercial product placement (this time it was Applebee's) as a reward? I remember back when rewards were things like going to a cool waterfall and having a picnic lunch with great food from that culture, or going to a really neat freshwater jellyfish lake with a picnic lunch. I miss those rewards. Now it's a stack of pizzas back at your camp or things like a horrible movie with popcorn and movie food goodies, or like the Applebee's food. I wonder if the commercial product placement rewards are because Survivor needs the money but I also find that hard to believe because of the show's success. To keep from sounding like a negative Nancy (I hate the term Debbie Downer because my name is Debbie ) I just wanted to point out something I noticed about Noura on this episode. She was the one paired up with Karishma during the snake in the sand challenge. I really admired the way she spoke to Karishma while doing the challenge. She remained very positive and said things like "C'mon girl, give it all you got!" and things like that. She never once said anything negative. I know I couldn't have done that. If it were me I'd probably have said, "Move your ass or I'll move it for you!" I know Noura sometimes gets bad press but I think her strange outbursts and akward social responses may be due to a mental illness. I've heard of one that can make patients react like that missing social cues. Now as far as the last episode when she messed up trying to explain to her tribe why they had to make her the caller-that's on her-she should have come up with a better story. And not everyone makes a good caller in a challenge like that-you need just the right person. I hope we get more episodes without IOI. This past week was wonderful without it.

OMG, the Applebees product placement was ridiculous. I seriously would be embarrassed if I were Applebees with the over the top enthusiasm and declarations of best reward ever from the winners. Dalton's review is pretty funnyI agree with what you said about Noura, birukitty . Whatever her social awkwardness is about, she sure stayed positive and encouraging with Karishma during the challenge. I was a little shocked at Karishma being so open about questioning where her marriage was going. The arranged marriage and family pressure to get married didn't surprise me at all - I know a few women that have been through that - but the comments about her and her husband essentially being polite roommates was more than I expected to hear. I really see her getting an edit where she goes a long way in the game. Honestly, I'm not surprised Tom was the one to go and expect Dean to be next if they lose again. The 5 expect to get back with their old tribe when they merge and want to do that with the strongest of the other team gone. I didn't miss the IOI at all this week and was happy to see more interactions on the beach and two challenges.

I didn't miss the IOI at all this week and was happy to see more interactions on the beach and two challenges. Now see-that's an angle I didn't even think of when it came to the vote at tribal council-the 5 Purple original members and the 3 Orange original members-that the purple members would look at the vote and think only of keeping their group of 5 together no matter what and getting rid of the original orange 3. Looking ahead and seeing themselves hooking up again with their original purple tribemates after the merge. I finally get now what you meant Jackie by saying they had the numbers advantage. I guess it makes sense to look ahead for them (the 5) and get rid of the strongest 3 first but in that case why not vote Dean first and then Tom? I haven't read Dalton's review yet so I don't know how he analyze's this week's episode. It's fun to look back and arm chair quaterback all of this, isn't it? I would love to go on Survivor but I can't lie at all-I have a face that you can read everything on as plain as day. If it weren't for that I'd be tempted to apply. Regarding Applebee's-Did you hear what Karishma said? "It's my favorite sit down restaurant ever!" Seriously? I can think of a lot nicer restaurants I've been to in my life or hope to go to one day that would fit that catagory instead of Applebee's! It's so obvious they were all coached to gush about the reward and mostly about Applebee's.

Before I talk about this week’s episode, I just had a few more things to say about last week’s episode. I too felt something for Karishma when she talked about her life, family, relationships. I can’t begin to understand what her life is/has been like. I’m sure it factors in to some of her behavior out there. She still bothers me though. She appears very lazy at camp, whiny in challenges, and I really didn’t like it (and Dalton mentioned this too) when she told her new tribe that her old tribe “bullied her”. I agree with him that this term has become so overused that it’s starting to lose its meaning. Granted, we don’t see everything, but I’ve definitely never witnessed anything that could be called bullying. I think it’s part of the victimhood that she seems to convey that just doesn’t sit well with me.
Okay, onto this episode. First, Dean was probably wise to play along with Noura in the next day discussion after last week’s TC but then tell Jamal about it. No way is Noura going to get anyone to go along with her so his much better bet was trying to turn her previous tribe against her.
I was happy to see a reward challenge as I was afraid they’d skip it. But they gave us one and still managed to squeeze in a trip to the island of the idols with Rob and Sandra. I still love Elaine. Her comment about being “5’2” and a can of busted biscuits”. Too funny!
Okay, I gotta address the durag comment. I’m really interested to hear all of your thoughts. When I heard durag, I did NOT think racial. Granted, I’m a white middle-aged midwestern mama. But I hear that term used all of the time for wearing a bandana that style and it has NEVER been associated with just black people. I see all kinds of people wearing it. I’ve never even heard of anyone using it racially. I thought Jamal’s reaction was really surprising and kind of sad. I’m all for careful speech but it does seem out of control to me. Regardless, I think Jack handled it beautifully. He saw it bothered Jamal and he was apologetic, kind, and open. While I don’t understand Jamal’s reaction, it is HIS reaction to have and I was glad that the way Jack handled it meant so much to him.
I loved that Elaine got the vote block. She kind of scared the crap out of me when it flipped out if her bathing suit. I was afraid at first that she didn’t realize it. I HATED the reaction Aaron had to her having the block. I really don’t like him. He’s helping to winnow his original tribe down, not even considering that the original tribe loyalties would stick together. I think he’s being foolish. I’m watching the last bit of the show now, the tribal council, and I will be sooo infuriated with Aaron and Missy if they vote out Elaine. They will be the villains for me if they do that.

I never associated it with black people either, frankly I associate it more with granola boys then anyone else. I think Jack and Jamal handled it really well, although I would have been so confused if I were Jack and someone got upset by that comment. Still watching here, just wanted to check in about the Durag because I was so floored by that conversation.

Loved that Aaron and Missy came through for Elaine.

Regarding the durag and the dialogue about white privilege: It's very difficult to point out to those who are in privilege that they are in a bubble of privilege. It's not the durag conversation. It's the ongoing dings, comments, and other microaggressions that in isolation, simply don't seem like a big deal. But over time, and having to deal with them endlessly, repetitively, and without any self-awareness by those that do, it is exhausting. Even in the comments here, credit is given to how Jack handled the situation. I think Jamal did a wonderful job with trying to break it down to Jack in a very accessible, non-confrontational way. I am so freaking white that I have to work hard to even have a smidgen of hope to better understand what my friends navigate through all the time. And I was not raised with any financial privilege--but I was born with privileged skin.

Well-I always surprise myself by realizing halfway through a season that I never noticed a player thus far-and that player this year is Jack. I even have a kid named Jack so you’d think I’d make the connection-doh! Anyway, I found myself a bit misty eyed during the durag conversation. I think I just appreciated the honest words exchanged and the ability to listen and reflect.
And I am just shocked about all the boo-hooing at the end. Hello, this is the Survivor. At what point did they think they would be immune from back stabbing and blind sides. What a bunch of babies.
So glad Elaine is still around I agree, the busted can of biscuits was such a funny line. Go Elaine!!

Okay peas, here is Dalton’s recap. I thought it was interesting that when Dalton talked about Tommy’s group at TC he mentioned how they’re really playing to win because they ALL said they’d be willing to go to rocks. I kind of disagree with that. I think they were able to say that so adamantly because they felt safe and thought they had Aaron in their back pocket. Plus, I think they were using it to send a message to Aaron—stay with you said because we will not waver. I think that might have backfired a bit (Dalton mentions this too and I thought it while it was happening) because it also sends a message “look how strong our bonds are with our original tribe mates—we will not turn on each other”. If I’m Aaron, that certainly would get me thinking. This bond will extend to the other original tribe mates when the merge happens. Where dies this leave me—on the fringe. Very glad he made the choice he did.

I am confused about Elaine announcing her advantage, did she have to do that in front of everyone or could she have done it while writing her vote? I was wondering if that is ultimately what swayed Aaron.

I was surprised at that announcement too. When she first spoke up I thought no Elaine, what are you doing? But when she finished, it DID seem like she had to do it. It wasn’t as if Jason was allowed to go vote and Jeff simply wouldn’t count it. He wasn’t even allowed to go up and vote at all. So it does seem the person gets to find that out ahead of time. I remember that block being used before and the person blocking announced it before the vote then too. Can’t remember the season, but I do suddenly recall it. The block was a surprising one and I think it really hurt the persons feelings who was blocked.

I was surprised when she pulled that out and started talking... but I think when they flashed a picture of it there was something on it about having to announce before the vote. But I was still distracted at that point googling the origin of durag and trying to better inform myself on that issue.
I was all prepared to be really pissed off after that vote. I especially like the four in that alliance and was hoping they wouldn’t turn on each other at that point. I am curious to see what happens now that an advantage from IOI has been played and people start questioning what exactly is the deal over there since she didn’t show up with an immunity idol.
And as a side note- it looked like Karishma kept up fairly well and was able to help get the heavy bags moved during the immunity challenge. I was happy for her that it didn’t become another pile on her with Jeff leading the charge.

I thought for sure Aaron was going to flip. Was happily surprised at the final vote. Elaine's gotta watch her back though. She seemed a bit too cocky, and that usually goes the other way.

I give huge credit to Jamal for the way he handled it. All Jack did was apologize, listen and learn. I have never heard anyone refer to buff as anything but a buff. Why would Jack identify Jamal's as a durag? How can anyone not see that as racial? I, too, was surprised at Elaine reading her advantage before the vote, but assume she had no choice. I was surprised that they targeted Jason over Tommy or Dan, thinking they'd want to take out a physically stronger player. I took the "we'll go to rocks" as a bluff to to try force a crack on the other side.

I have never heard anyone refer to buff as anything but a buff. Survivor is the only place I have ever heard the word buff in this context. Is a buff an actual thing that exists in the outside world, or is it an invented Survivor word?

I recall some previous black players saying there were issues at camp, so maybe this was a way to showcase some changes in camp life?
I don't trust Aaron - I think the advantage was the only thing that saved Elaine. It should be interesting to see what happens when the merge occurs, especially if the purple team loses again and then takes out another orginal Volkai member, as it would then be 7 orginal Volkai to 6 original Lairos members.
I wonder if Elizabeth is aware of how close Aaron and Missy are - that could be bad for her game.

Buff is a brand name- buffusa.com/ It appears they sell Survivor branded buffs - maybe that's why there have been so many orange and purple teams lately. Inked/Studio Calico sells something similar called adventure bands.

These were probably the worst reactions I remember happening on survivor ( my memory isn’t faultless and I’ve skipped a couple of 1/2 seasons ) but they were over the top sure and then so unrealistically devastated I want to ask them all what they thought they signed up for.

Well I guess I am one of those people that cause you to make the stupid face at because I’m one of those people who would not have seen it as racial. I’ve used that term and have seen people wear durags for ages. Whether they call it buff (which is a brand new term for me with Survivor), or bandana or durag, it all means pretty much the same thing. I never associated it with a particular race and I definitely never considered any negative connotation around it. I’m certainly willing to learn if something has a completely different meaning to others than what I’m aware of. I always try to err on the side of being kind and not offending others. I really try to be aware of hot buttons and all that, but I’m not perfect and really don’t appreciate this idea that I’m stupid or live in some kind of bubble if I don’t see this terrible racial connection with what has always been a very benign and universal term to me.

I will sit on that bench with you. It is not a term I recall ever using, but would know what you were talking about if I heard it. It my admittedly very Caucasian part of the Midwest they are often seen on men who protect themselves when working, such as a welder, or engaging in certain activities where a traditional hat would blow away like riding a motorcycle or out on the lakes. And around here a “wife beater” is also commonly worn by Caucasians with its own stereotypes in our communities, that isn’t uniquely an African American connotation either like Jamal seemed to imply (perhaps that supports the argument that if it isn’t common in your community you don’t know that it has other meanings to some people). So in some parts of the country these objects are viewed differently and I am glad for having learned something watching Survivor last night.

First, how sad is it that Rudy from season one passed away? I always liked him and his honesty. RIP Rudy.
This was a great episode. I really like Kellee and Janet a lot. I like Elaine too. Janet was so good on Island of the Idols and so well spoken at Tribal. Very wise woman.
The immunity challenge was so close I was holding my breath! At tribal I couldn't believe that Jamal played his idol for Noura.

I loved how Janet articulated her feelings during tribal. For only speaking for a minute, it was quite impactful.
RIP Rudy. He’s was a Survivor original-nobody quite like him on Survivor since.

ok so Kelly (is that her name?) gave her idol to Dean to use - but she still voted for Dean. OK I can pretty much understand that from a game-play perspective. But WHY did Noura vote for Jack? What did I miss???
I was surprised that Jamal used his idol for Noura. I thought for sure he was going to use it on himself, and that now he was going to be voted out because of his strategy. Shocked that he wasn't the target
