In the past week or so, my right big toe has gotten increasingly painful. It's not around the nail, it's sort of at the tip and radiating down along the side. It feels like a bruise, but doesn't look bruised.
I think it has something to do with using my stair-stepper in my sock feet a couple of times, which was dumb, I know. I've cut back on using it (and believe me, I wasn't setting any records on it, but is a new exercise method for me) but the toe hurts all the time. I think it's a little bit swollen. Would ice be the appropriate next step? I'd like to do what I can at home before I have to go to a doctor.

@*Shannon My fellow recipe tinkerer! Lol. Your changes sound good.
@stingfan I love those one star reviews where they change ththe whole recipe. I swear I don't do that! But it IS a challenge for me to make a recipe exactly as written, I'll admit it.

It would appear the state of Virginia has a mess on its hands. You have Governor who has now been branded a racist because of an offensive picture from 35 years ago. You have a Lt. Governor who has had sexual abuse charges made against him from 15 years ago. And now you have this about the AG, who I understand would be next in line to be Governor if the other two are gone. “Virginia Attorney General Herring says he wore blackface in college”. It was in 1980. And I think I read this morning the Republicans gained/kept control of the State House by pulling a name out of a hat after the election last year? No wonder they say politics can be messy. If your a Republican, you are probably enjoying all this very much right now. Yes, in 2017 the Democratic candidate for the House seat won by one vote. The recount declared it a tie, and when they drew names, the Republican won. I took particular interest in the whole thing, because it was my district and I voted for the Democrat.

I haven’t seen that here. And I don’t think that you can really make those blanket statements about many people because most didn’t hear of the incident - myself included - until after he already issued a statement admitting that it was himself in the pictures. And I live here in VA. I just happened to be at a movie when the story broke. I imagine a lot of people were also occupied on a Saturday afternoon and didn’t hear about the story until it was already developing and more than just “a photo was found. We are waiting for a comment from Northam.” And finally, people ARE discussing it. That is what we are doing here. The thread was started at 3:51 with the Fox article that included his apology. Post at 4:03 - resign post at 4:07 - resign post at 4:17 - resign post at 4:29 - resign post at 4:31 “I voted for him and I think that he needs to resign. As soon as possible. There is no excusing away those pictures and what mindset they represent.”Then in typical pea fashion, the thread sort of derailed. So yea, people on this thread wanted him to resign regardless of how he handled it. Because he had apologized and there was still this call for him to resign. As far as the discussion went, until I asked my questions, it was pretty much agreeing with each other, going after “trolls, going after the Republicans who really should resign, but nothing about being this quick to judge. The minute that picture from the 80’s appeared that man was doomed and nothing he said or did all the years after that was going to change that. My guess is he will be gone by the end of the week. Mine was the 4:07 post, and i just said it was inexcusable, because it is. And disgusting. But I didn't say he should resign. I can see both sides of the argument and I probably lean a little more toward your side of it @fred .

Here's the recipe: Cooking Classy Vegetable Soup I usually make vegetable soup with meat (ground beef or turkey) so I was looking for a strictly vegetable soup recipe. This one is great and really flexible. I used a bag of frozen soup vegetable mix (corn, carrots, peas, green beans) instead of the individual elements, and a combination of chicken stock and vegetable broth, and whole canned tomatoes, chopped, which I think are a little saucier than diced. I also used oregano and basil because I dislike thyme. And I threw in some chopped baby bok choy that I needed to use up, only a cup and a half or so. AND I left out the potatoes and instead stirred in 3/4 cup orzo for the last 10-15 cooking minutes. So you can see that you can do pretty much what you want with it. I think the flavor keys are good stock/broth (and not necessarily low-sodium, or maybe a mix) and canned tomatoes that have some sauciness to them. A splash of tomato juice might add some of that flavor if all you have is diced. The bok choy added a little bit of sweetness, I think. I would definitely put cabbage of some sort into this again. My husband and I each had two bowls and I just had another bowl for lunch. Just thought I'd share since there's still a lot of winter cold ahead for most of us. Ingredients 2 1/2 Tbsp olive oil 1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion (1 medium) 2 cups peeled and chopped carrots (about 4) 1 1/4 cups chopped celery (about 3) 4 cloves garlic , minced 4 (14.5 oz) cans low-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth 2 (14.5 oz) cans diced tomatoes (undrained) 3 cups peeled and 1/2-inch thick diced potatoes (from about 3 medium) 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 bay leaves 1/2 tsp dried thyme Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 1/2 cups chopped frozen or fresh green beans 1 1/4 cups frozen or fresh corn 1 cup frozen or fresh peas Instructions Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add onions, carrots, and celery and saute 4 minutes then add garlic and saute 30 seconds longer. Add in broth tomatoes, potatoes, parsley, bay leaves, thyme and season with salt and pepper to taste (for more flavor add in more dried herbs as desired). Bring to a boil, then add green beans. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 20 - 30 minutes, then add corn and peas and cook 5 minutes longer.

That looks lovely, so cosy. It really does! Just want to wrap right up in it.

Meal planning is not my favorite thing, but it helps me SO MUCH when it's four PM and I'm tired and it's time to start dinner. (We eat early many nights because of my husband's work/volunteer schedule.)
I don't plan a whole week at a time, because we eat out sometimes and also eat leftovers sometimes. I plan three, sometimes four dinners. (Breakfast and lunch don't require a plan.) I'm flexible and swap my planned meals around depending on how time-consuming they are and what needs to be used up first. Apart from beans, my husband is willing to eat whatever I cook, (except breakfast for dinner, he hates that!) and we don't have any kids, picky or otherwise. This helps a lot! I decide what we'll eat, and I do all the cooking...every so often my husband makes a request, but he'd eat hot dogs and tacos for every meal if I wasn't in charge of making sure we get a healthy rotation and regular vegetables, lol. I don't mind being in charge of food because it helps my dietary needs, too, and I'm a good cook whereas my husband has zero interest in the kitchen. (He does lots of other stuff, though.)
I don't mind grocery shopping too much, either, because I have my regular place I go, which almost always has what I'm looking for, and I know the layout well (except when they do a store re-set, which they did recently and which makes me rage-y.) What I dislike is coming home and unpacking it all and putting it away. And the thing I HATE about the whole process is cleaning out the fridge and tossing things that didn't get eaten up or even used at all. I've been making a concerted effort to avoid food wastage, but it really does take a lot more effort to be aware of what's in the fridge and plan accordingly.
When I'm planning the week's meals, I pick one source for recipes for that week, either Pinterest or a specific cookbook. I try to mix a new recipe or two in with the ones I use regularly.
I think the hardest thing at this point is coming up with healthier recipes and figuring out how to incorporate more nutrition-rich foods. Our suppers aren't terrible, but there's still room to cut down on the carbs and fat and add more dark greens.

I read two great books this week.
The Library Book by Susan Orlean. If you've ever loved a library, you'll enjoy this book. The author uses the story of the catastrophic fire at the Los Angeles Central Library in 1986 to tell a broader story about libraries in general, the services they provide, the challenges they face, and the people who work for them. I just loved it. Here's my favorite quote: "In the library, time is dammed up--not just stopped but saved. The library is a gathering pool of narratives and of the people who come to find them. It is where we can glimpse immortality; in the library, we can live forever."
The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai. This tells two parallel stories, one about a young gay man in the 1980s in Chicago and all of his friends, as AIDS sweeps through their group, and the other about a woman in 2015 who was the younger sister of one of the men and who has been scarred by grief because of so many losses. She is looking for her estranged daughter in Paris and in the process starts to realize how her unresolved grief and anger have affected her relationship with her daughter. As usual in these types of things, the older story is better, but both are necessary. This was a very absorbing book for me, I kind of fell into it and didn't come out for a few days, and after I finished it, I had an emotional hangover. I highly recommend it, it's a complex story with a lot of characters to keep track of, but so beautifully told.

And, yet, Trump won the WH. Those midterm elections had Dems squeaking out wins not total landslides. The Repubs got away with shit to win elections—Hello, GA and whatever Northern state that screwed over the indigenous population. People complained. What was done about it? Not a damn thing. 2020 is going to be a fight, to be sure. #1 priority should be to get Trump ousted. Gather the white women...Seriously? How many of them voted for Trump? Despite his despicable behavior toward women and views about women. Have you been paying attention? *smh* 52%, yes. But if you read some of people's posts here, some of those women are changing their minds. It's not outside the realm of possibility. My fear is that if the Democratic party decides they can win only with an old white man (yet again), that we will lose the young vote and the votes of people of color, who overwhelmingly voted for Hillary. I fear that they will see themselves unrepresented yet again, and will just sit out. We need to MOBILIZE voters where it matters and work hard to fight voter suppression, because THAT will be one of our biggest challenges in the 2020 election. No need to shake your head at me. I'm not stupid, and I am paying attention. We need to run the candidate who most likely can beat Trump, and I do NOT think that needs to be a white man. My opinion. I really do hope you're right, and I appreciate your optimism. Mine is sort of low.

@peano I totally agree with you about Kobluchar and Brown. I'm a huge fan of Senator Brown. I've said it before and I'll try not to say it again, but I really feel it will take a white male candidate to beat Trump. It makes me mad and sad to say that, but I do believe it. And Brown is one of the good ones. He's sensible and steady, which I think might appeal to the few Republicans who are queasy about Trump's lack of those qualities. We have to sway some of those people, or the electoral college will hand it to Trump again.

Ummm, no I'm not looking for any one to justify unjustifiable behavior. I find it interesting that any potential case of a conservative is shared multiple times. Sometimes the story hasn't been verified and later discredited. I was interested that no one brought this case up since any and all conservatives in similar situations are ripped up one side and down another, with cause. FFS, it's been in the news just a couple of hours. I saw it on CNN about twenty minutes ago. Sorry we're not as speedy as you believe we should be.

I did an enormous purge last spring, got rid of about 60% of all my crafting stuff. Mostly scrapbooking, some stamping, a little cross stitch, and just odds and ends from other attempts that never took, like crochet.
I feel comfortable with the stuff I have now, except I'm feeling increasingly that my scrapbooking days are done. I'm going to do a 50th anniversary album for my parents and see how I feel after that. I think making cards and cross stitch are things I'll keep enjoying, as long as my eyes hold out.
What I still have that i probably shouldn't is two big boxes full of punches. They're heavy, they're hard to rummage through, but they were an investment and most can't be replaced. I purged a few, but I can't let go of the rest yet!
