Now that Christmas is over it's time to focus on our 2020 documenting and One Little Word! Last year I fell off the wagon with this project around July, but this year I signed up for AE's class so hopefully I will stick with this project like I have in years past. I plan to update this thread with a monthly check in and will tag anyone who wants a reminder. If you're participating in OLW or a similar project this is the thread for all OLW discussions, questions and encouragement!
Introduce yourself and if you want, fill out the following questions and join our thread! Welcome
Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) What is your word for 2020? Why did you choose that word? Is this your first year participating in OLW? If not, what words have you had in the past? Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Are you signed up for Ali's class? Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? How are you planning on documenting your word? Note: If you participate in this thread I will assume you want to be tagged in my monthly reminders. If you don't please let me know in your initial post or send me a DM. I don't want these tags to be an annoyance for anyone, but I hope they will help encourage those who want them to keep up with this project!

Introduce yourself! Hi, I'm Linda, I'm in my 30s and live in upstate NY with my husband, 14 year-old daughter, cat and chihuahua. I am a tax attorney by day and love to cook, sew, knit, cross-stitch, do home improvement projects, and of course scrapbook. We're currently building a new house and are living in a temporary apartment until the house is done, which is expected in mid-March. What is your word for 2020? Space. Why did you choose that word? Because I need to work on allowing myself to take space for myself, finding space in my schedule for the things that matter, finding the right balance between giving others space/spending quality time, and literally moving into a new space and decorating it to feel like home. Is this your first year participating in OLW? No, I've done it every year since 2015, but skipped taking the class last year. If not, what words have you had in the past? 2015-brave, 2016-present, 2017-choose, 2018-grow, 2019-breathe. Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Brave has been my best word so far. I really needed it that year and it just worked really well for everything I was going through. Grow was my lease favorite word because that year did not go as expected and the goals I had for the word didn't come to fruition. Are you signed up for Ali's class? Yes. Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? Nope, just here. How are you planning on documenting your word? I plan to create a 6x8 album to follow along with the AE class prompts and will probably add in some of my own layouts/reflections as well. I purchased the star album & the quarterly kits, but skipped the main kit.
In 2015 I followed this approach--the class prompts + my own layouts each month and it worked well. In 2016 & 2017 I just followed with the class prompts in albums using the offered supplies and it got a little stale. In 2018 I mixed it up, used my stash and focused on making my album beautiful & a reflection of my life (almost like a personal project life album through the lens of my word). I found a way each month to very loosely followed the prompts and adjust them to fit my album's style. It was a fun way to mix up the project & use up my stash, but it got difficult to stay motivated through the year because the project required a lot more thought about how I was going to approach each month & the design of each page than just following the prompts. In 2019 I skipped the class and used the OLW journal, but without the class (and with probably the craziest year of my life) I fell off the wagon entirely in about July and am abandoning the project (something I never do).
I'm excited to get back to where I started with this project and follow along with the monthly prompts again... but I'm hoping to bring in a little of what I did in 2018 to my album. I'm hoping after a year-long hiatus the prompts will seem fresh and inspiring again and I'm super excited to see where 2020 and "space" takes me!

Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) Im Melissa and I just turned 40. I am a SAHW with two grown boys. I live in Texas with my DH and two dogs. My degree in Interior Design but I have not worked outside the home in 15 years. I scrapbook and do Project Life. What is your word for 2020? There have been 3 words I have been tossing around, but I have settled on 'RELEASE'. I do have some worries that this word is too negative but I really do feel this is my word for 2020. Why did you choose that word? I am a worrier by nature and want to learn to let things go. Is this your first year participating in OLW? No If not, what words have you had in the past? Content, Downsize, Progress, Discover Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? My favorite was probably discover. Least favorite was progress - I just dont feel like it was specific enough for me. Are you signed up for Ali's class? Not yet, but probably will. Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? nope How are you planning on documenting your word? 6x8 book and then share on my scrappy instagram.

Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) I'm from NZ, with hubby and two camera shy teen boys. I'm late 40s, and work full time.
What is your word for 2020? Restore
Why did you choose that word? I did the Ali E quiz and came up with "heal" - which didn't really fit. When I looked at the thesaurus, restore was a word that stood out. I have had a rough year with various circumstances, and 2020 is the year we are putting some of those things behind us and ready to move on. I'm really looking foward to 2020.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? No - I did it the first year Ali offered as a class, have always picked a word since then, but don't always fully document the word.
If not, what words have you had in the past? I've had focus, nurture, action, persist
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? Renew - possibly because I picked it but it never really gelled and I didn't really do anything with it
Are you signed up for Ali's class? Am toying with signing up again - probably if you get the digitals pack like last year, I'll probably do it. I don't usually fully document the whole year. Usually just a few prompts here and there.
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No - I'd love to know what other projects are out there!
How are you planning on documenting your word? I like having a physical thing for the year - last year I got my friend to embroider a quote, the year before I did the vision board.

Introduce yourself! I'm from Australia, have just turn 30 and have been scrapbooking since I was 13. I grew up scrapbooking all through high school and have continued to document my life (and now my husband's life) as time has gone on. I live with my husband in our cute little apartment in Melbourne with my furbaby. I currently work as an exercise scientist full time but also have a degree in graphic design which comes in handy when I scrapbook.
What is your word for 2020? My word is Joy
Why did you choose that word? I'll be opening my own studio/business in 2020 which is called Joyful. I thought the word Joy was appropriate as it corresponds with that (which I predict will be the biggest project taking up my energy in the new year) but it also poses as a reminder to myself to stay light hearted, happy, smiling and to focus on all the small positive things - especially when life gets crazy, busy or hard.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? If not, what words have you had in the past? No. I've had an intentional annual word for many years - prior to Ali Edwards starting the class I followed Susannah Conway who ran a similar workshop on her blog. Some of my previous words have been: Balance, Create, Choose, Trust, Complete, Grow and Love
Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? I really connected with Trust and Grow. I think because these were both big years full of change for me and the words seemed very relevant to what was going on in my life at the time. I love the word Create but didn't feel as though I connected with the word well that year - I wouldn't mind repeating that word again in an upcoming year.
Are you signed up for Ali's class? Not yet this year. Ive signed up the last few but the class always seems similar so I thought I may save my pennies this time and just rewatch previous years content.
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No
How are you planning on documenting your word? I think this year I'll just include random reflections in my yearly PL album or my stories album. I have done stand alone albums in the past for some of my words when they have been more private/personal. I think Joy will tie in well with my day-to-day documenting.

I do have some worries that this word is too negative but I really do feel this is my word for 2020. I don't see it as a negative word at all? The word release to me makes me think of breathing out a sigh of relief! Or letting go of negativity. It seems like a good word! Are you signed up for Ali's class? Am toying with signing up again - probably if you get the digitals pack like last year, I'll probably do it. I don't usually fully document the whole year. Usually just a few prompts here and there. But it's good to have some new bits to play with for when I do work with them. Also trying to find someone in NZ that will laser cut my word - think that would be a nice way to add to my collection of physical items. Buying the "official" custom product is just prohibitive with FX and shipping

I copied my post from another thread, over on the NSBR board.
I don't do the "One Little Word" class. But every year since 2008, I've chosen a word or words(sometimes a saying), as a focus and inspiration as to how I want to live my life.
For 2020 I chose "Less and More".
With the thoughts of: "Less and More"
Less spending money.
Less stuff.
Less junk food
Less toxic people in my life.
Less saying "yes" (because I feel I have to or should).
Less time wasted on other peoples issues and drama.
Less commitment and obligation.
More boundaries.
More putting myself first
More "me time".
More saving money.
More saying "no".
More downsizing.
More checking things off the proverbial bucket list.
More healthier eating.
More exercise.
More drinking water daily.
More scrapbooking.

Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) Hi, I’m Margie. I’m 55, scrapbooked for years and then stopped when my only child, my 25yr old ds went to college. I made cards for years which I loved. Then I went through a lot personally and professionally and lost interest. I want to be creative again and I want to push myself forward in my life.
What is your word for 2020? I choose MORE which I hope isn’t too general.
Why did you choose that word? In March of this year after 33 years in Florida, I moved to St. Louis, MO for a fresh start. My last few years in Florida we’re not good. When I moved here I stayed with a friend for 5 months. Now I have my own place and a great job. Taking that leap of faith turned out well. I don’t want to stop there, I want more. More adventures, more savings, more cooking, more healthy choices, more friends, more fun, more moving forward towards the life I want.
Is this your first year participating in OLW? yes
Are you signed up for Ali's class? No
Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? No
How are you planning on documenting your word? 6x8 album

So I am looking at the 6x8 papers for sell int he shop vs. the 6x8 that are given to the class. Not all of the papers are in the printed version. I wonder why? There are 12 in the listing in the shop and 18 in the digital downloads.

Introduce yourself! (e.g. name/where you are from/who you live with/occupation/fun facts about you/general age, etc... whatever you want to share to help everyone get to know you!) HI! I am Lisa. What is your word for 2020? simplify Why did you choose that word? my word last year was less, which was great. I still feel called to that word, but even more than less I often make things hard for myself. I want to simplify my life so I have more time to enjoy the things that truly matter to me. Is this your first year participating in OLW? no If not, what words have you had in the past? I have used move, no, less, home and a few others. Which of your prior words was your favorite/least favorite and why? my favorite was probably home, which as lead me on this journey to love my home, have less, keep it simple etc. Are you signed up for Ali's class? yes Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? here and at alis site How are you planning on documenting your word? in an 8.5x11 album

There are 12 in the listing in the shop and 18 in the digital downloads. The pages included in the physical kit are double sided. The additional pages in the digital kit are just the backs of some of the double-sided pages. Some of the papers just have a simple grid on the back of all of them, so she only had to provide that once in the digital... so that's why there are 18 and not 24 in the digital pack.

What is your word for 2020? I choose MORE which I hope isn’t too general. I think "more" sounds like a great word! I prefer using a word that is general enough that I can apply it to different areas of my life because there are typically different things I want to work on. Is this your first year participating in OLW? yes Are you signed up for Ali's class? No Just curious, what prompted you to start this project for the first time? If you aren't signing up for Ali's class and haven't taken it in the past, what are you going to use as the basis for documenting your word? Definitely not saying you need to sign up for the class, I'm just curious.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B6tcGwgpdu_ Ali shared her OLW on Instagram and her blog. She chose the word "less." I thought this might be particularly interesting to you teacherlisa because that was your word last year. tampascrapper it might give you some insight too because it's the opposite of your word--and definitely just as general! This year is the first time I have chosen a word that Ali has used in the past (not on purpose, it just happened out that way) so I'm kinda excited to go back through that old class and review her prompts using my word. I think I will do that tomorrow before diving into the first prompt. I also am planning on writing a little reflection on each of my prior words in the beginning of my album... something I haven't done before, but I think will help get me in the mindset for this project because I really let it fall through the cracks last year and this year I think I need it more than ever. Any one else have any plans to help get themselves ready for this project before diving into the first prompt?

I was just too busy, too broke or too stressed! I can use any prompts from here, Ali’s blog, Pinterest or the internet. I am doing this with a group of 5 ladies. One of them is the leader and will be giving us prompts and doing check ins. The thing with scrapbooking, OLW, December Daily, etc is that there isn’t a wrong way to do any of it. You just do want feels right to you. That being said, I can sign up for Ali’s class later if I feel I need it.

I was just curious because typically when people say they're not taking the class it's because they're using an old class they purchased. I was just wondering what else was out there. I think that's great that you found a group to participate with! Are the rest of them peas? I would love if you/your group shared their prompts here... we could all use more inspiration!
That said, I'm doing the class this year so I can't restate the prompts here given that it's paid content from Ali... but I'm sure people (myself included) will share their take/check in and you can often figure out the prompt that way.

I just signed up for the class. After skipping it last year, I figure I'll give it a go. Introduce yourself: I'm Michelle. I have 3 kids, 20, 20, and 15. I'm a sahm. What is your word for 2020. Grow. I had this word last year. I didn't take Ali's class last year, but I did do vision board and some of the beginning of year and mid year journaling similar to the prompts from other years. I felt I could go more with this word. Why did you choose this word: I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to figure out some things. I have a wide, varied interest in many things, and I'd like to explore that. Is this your first year: No my first year was 2014. my other words were: open, worthy, strength, joy, and grow. I took the class the other years except last. Open and joy were my favorite years. Worthy was by far my least favorite. I got nowhere fast with that one. Are you signed up for Ali class: yes Are you participating in other check ins: no. I'm undecided, but probably will not do the Facebook group. How are you documenting your word: travelers notebook

I'm MaryAnn, 41, and a SAHM.
What is your word for 2020? create Why did you choose that word? I chose it because I want to create a better life. Is this your first year participating in OLW? No, I've done it a bit in the past. If not, what words have you had in the past? The only one I can remember is more. Are you signed up for Ali's class? I'm not participating. I might if I have a better idea about the prompts. From what I've seen, I don't think most would apply to my life. Are you participating in any other similar projects/check-ins online or elsewhere? Undecided. How are you planning on documenting your word? I have a private pinterest board divided into sections like create peace, create happiness, create art... I'll add another section documenting how I implemented the word. I'm not sure how I'll document it on paper.
I don't think I've stuck to using the word the entire year because one little word is too vague to me, hence the sections with the added second words.

So here we are on January 1st and I decided to do OLW and I can’t pick a word. The word that keeps coming is control but it feels so negative. I am a bit of a Type A (alright not a bit-a lot) and need to transition into a new phase of life. Our boys are young men now and I need to stop worrying about some of their choices as much and control the things I can. I’d also like to give up control of some of the planning of our life (we are currently on vacation and I planned the whole thing and I plan pretty much our day to day.). My husband works long hours and I just figure things out for our home.
I’m trying to let things go.

A word is only negative if we associate it with negativity. If you feel that it's possible as the year goes on it could be negative, try out some other words. Look in the thesaurus for control and see what else jumps out at you. Other words that come to me are, Relax, Release, (the phrase) Let Go. Good luck with your word!
