This may not count as October/Fall and some of you may laugh but I had Horchata for the first time ever yesterday. It has cinnamon, so it's got that fall thing going for it; at least for me! "traditional Mexican drink made by soaking rice and cinnamon together for 24 hours and then adding milk." Horchata! It's originally from Spain and specifically the region of Valencia where it's called orxata. It's been around the Mediterranean basin for so long but the current Spanish horchata goes back almost 1000 years in Valencia. It then got brought in to Mexico by the Spanish colons where it was adapted to local crops and tastes. If you ever travel to Spain in the region of Valencia or Catalonia, you have to try an orxata from a good orxateria with some fartons (sweet, light finger-shaped pastry goodness). Spanish horchata de chufa is made from ground and soaked tiger nuts so a totally different flavour from the Mexican horchata de arroz! It's usually drunk here on hot summer days to cool off. It's super popular in Barcelona. Do they also serve it with a shot of espresso to make some iced coffee goodness where you are?

Do they also serve it with a shot of espresso to make some iced coffee goodness where you are? Well, it's Utah, sooo probably not! My son brought it home for me. Total surprise! He's slowly coming off the sh*t list! I forgot to say it's salted caramel Horchata, but they do have the regular too.
The restaurant description is "authentic dishes derived from inspired recipes and traditional cooking of Northern Mexico’s Rio Grande region, Southern Texas, and New Mexico."

I was told by a liquor store patron my husband's alcohol tastes are like that of a female college student. Oh my, the revolution is underway! Hang in there, refugeepea, all the sinful drinks are coming... I can't imagine what the experience of having coffee and alcohol for the first time as a fully grown adult must've been like. The American craft brewing game is pretty strong and very active right now; have you had any local artisan micro beer breweries popping up? If not, it's coming up next, prepare yourself (and your husband's tastebuds)! Utah's and SLC especially are pretty hip right now. You can't stop the gentiles now!

They have seasonal beers too. I can't remember if they are the ones that have a giant Brigham Young plastered on their delivery trucks or not.
"Operating now for nearly 30 years, Wasatch Brewery has made history and paved the way for the Utah craft beer scene. The Park City brewpub was the first in the state, and owners were instrumental in changing state laws to allow such an establishment to exist. Now, Wasatch is enjoying wide popularity with its attitude-filled brews that are inspired by local culture. Cleverly playing on Utah’s history of polygamy in the 19th century, Wasatch created the Polygamy Porter: a dark, brown porter. Poking fun of a county that is notorious for its straight-laced values, the Provo Girl is light, crisp German pilsner that is sure to be the life of the party."
Apparently, they have European style ales

Did you see that Wasatch has a Black o' Lantern stout and pumpkin ale for October? I'd totally get that one down in my October Daily if I could. We had some US-brewed pumpkin beers in Disneyland Paris last year during Halloween season. Polygamy Porter even has a sisterwife in the Nitro Polygamy Porter. Their descriptions are cracking me up!

The packaging was really close to TN size, so I thought I better get it in case I do a TN... So there's a Pepperidge Farms factory sort of close-ish to me, but there's these people that come to my town and sell the overstock and the unloved, slightly damaged packages. I have not had that flavor yet, but I have had mint, dark chocolate sea salt, double dark chocolate, milk chocolate, orange chocolate, chocolate caramel, and double milk chocolate.
When I went there last time, they were giving away a free package of cookies because there was a tear in the side, but there was absolutley no holes! Now I like their chocolate chip cookies.
In summary, I'm a Milanos fan and have a big bag of messed up mint Milanos in my pantry.
Wow, that's a lot of flavors! I've had a few, but they're expensive for what they are so I try not to buy them. For free or cheap, I'll try them all! The verdict on the pumpkin spice ones is -eh. There's a burst of spice flavor as you first bite into them, and then they're pretty normal. Not great, not bad. I almost got the soft baked pumpkin cheesecake ones (like chocolate chip cookies but pumpkin-ish cookies with cheesecake-ish white chocolate chips?) but the packaging was less appealing.

I did find these beauties at the store today and a few made their way home with me! I'd never seen fresh ones so white before!! These are that delicate mix of cute and classy! I'm not sure which these are. Did they come with a name on the sticker? They could be the adorably named Baby Boo variety. I didn't even see if they had a name. But so many people have asked about them and now I myself am curious about them, I will check when I am back at Safeway again this week!

This talk of Horchata is setting off all kinds of bells in my brain, but I can't remember why?! I have been to Valencia...but I don't know if I had it there? many moons ago...
Is anyone here doing Victoria Marie's virtual crop this weekend? It's a wizard/halloween theme? I have a few halloween pages to work on, just thought it would be fun to get in the spirit a bit....

I chopped up half of my Ghost Stories pad to make an album yesterday. I cut the pages down to 8" so I could fold them to make 6x8" signatures. That left 4" to cut into card fronts. But then I looked at the themes and realized I won't be donating most of the cards I make with this collection. The 'don't fear the reaper' piles of skulls themes are way too dark for sick kids and/or seniors, especially during a pandemic! I'll have to pair them up with more cheerful/cute Halloween elements for donation cards or I'll just send plague cards to a lot of friends. I have a vague plan for the album but I have no idea if I will actually like it once I start. I have a plan B. But at least I'm past the 'overthinking it before you've even started' phase of the project. http://instagram.com/p/CF-70kHgm20

What do you mean by signatures? Groupings of pages that will get stitched to other groupings of pages - in my case each one is about 8 sheets folded in half and nested together. I think I'm using the term correctly... Each of the little booklets in this image is a signature.

October 7. Ladies, we've been at this for a whole week! How's it going? Are you keeping up with the project? Are you printing photos and sticking them as the days pass? I took the day off to spend it in a socially distanced way + FFP2/N95 mask-wearing (and windows open to ventilate as much as possible) at my mother's to help her with a few important chores. It was fun to have a whole day in her company. Feels like it's been forever with the pandemic... The wind was blowing hard all day and left a few peach-coloured trails across the evening sky when I left to return home. That'll be my photo for today's entry because I completely forgot to get my phone out and snap something while we were busy. The Nobel in Literature will be announced tomorrow so that might end up being my focus for the 8th. Not sure yet. I'll likely be in either a foul or a confused mood considering the Swedish Academy's problematic choices... My speculation list for tomorrow's winner(s): Maryse Condé, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Can Xue, Yu Hua, Anne Carson, Ismail Kadare and Claudio Magris. Ah f*ck it, throw Annie Ernaux and Lyudmila Ulitskaya in there as well... Anybody else spending the week predicting one or more Nobel prizes? Song of the day:

My husband and my DH and oldest DS absolutely love horchata and I grew up not being able to stand it! Here in my southern Arizona town which is predominantly Hispanic, you can buy horchata at grocery stores & little specialty stores. You can buy it pre-packaged or freshly made. And you can buy horchata popsicles. Pretty much everything flavored horchata! This is the only thing horchata flavored I'm on board with and we just had it a few days ago! It taste like cinnamon toast crunch cereal when mixed together. But maybe I ought give horchata with expresso a chance? sleepingbooty that is so interesting about Spain and horchata! Thanks for the history, love it!!

I have not had a chance to start my OD at all. My one day off, Sunday, was swallowed up by my DS and his somewhat newish GF(she's been a very good friend for many years) wanting to hang out and cook together and then my other kids joining in. That led to basically a full day with them.
That was followed by two 12 hour shifts, and capped off by a crazy busy 6 hour shift then coming home only to be called from work for several hours regarding a reaction to a high dose flu shot given to the elderly lady I care for.... so here I lay in bed dreaming of my day off tomorrow... trying not to get my hopes up.... Maybe I can start October daily tomorrow🙄
Meanwhile I keep taking pictures. And I also will fill in with stories and pictures of halloweens past on the slow days. Cause my kids are older and boring and I don't want my book filled with just pictures of me!!😂

I have given up on The Ghost Stories Pad as I found another one, and it was cancelled again! The nice lady said the shipping price was incorrect and she couldn't ship it to me for less than like $60!!! Sigh. I will have to enjoy it by admiring your work joblackford. I did, however, take a photo f all my Halloween brooches including the new one I got for my birthday today...does anyone want me to post it?

Louise Glück won the Nobel in Literature. I'm really happy! I thought Anne Carson would be up as the female North-American poet but Glück is a wonderful alternative to Carson. And some good news for the US in 2020! Congrats, Americans, a very well-deserved Nobel. The Wild Iris is such a beautiful poem (and collection of poems) about death and rebirth, quite appropriate for this thread:

You know fall is here when the meadery has pumpkin spice on tap. I'm waiting for the cranberry mead though. I LOVE their cranberry draft mead for the holidays. I plan to hoard it this year www.melovino.com/the-mead-bar/I have on my list a stop at a new cider brewery near me too but it's been so crowded lately that i haven't stopped ( darn pandemic ) And the darn pandemic is also hampering my desires to sample the pumpkin distillery wares of NJ on my list is Pumpking pumpkin whisky from lakewood (southern tier ) and Sourland's pumpkin spiced rum.

The Wild Iris is such a beautiful poem (and collection of poems) about death and rebirth, quite appropriate for this thread: SO beautiful! If anyone wants something oce to listen to tonight, one of my most favourite radio programms (Gideon Coe on BBC 6Music) have an autumn and beer themed show on air right now, but hopefully you can all have a listen later if you want. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000n6w9 It feels lovely and cosy and inclusive. I've had this week off and have kept it fairly quiet with the exception of seeing some friends from afar who are due to have their first baby next week who have moved two roads away from where my mum grew up! I don't think my mum has been back to Streatham since she moved away when she was 18 so it was really nice to send a couple of pictures to her (and crikey, she lived in an amazing house! A big Victorian place down a quiet road with a big garden but still really close to culture and bars. Basicially my dream house) Also had a trip on my own to see the Trees exhbition at the Hayward gallery. It was soooo good it made me cry and seemed a perfect autumnal trip. Social distancing and safety measures were top notch too. The South Bank is so quiet at the moment as well, which is nice. I made my own pumpkin spiced latte yesterday. It was GOOD.

I am not doing October Daily, but I have a continuous 9x12 Halloween set of albums I work on, so time doesn't really matter per se. Small pieces would still be fine, but I live in Australia and it might be a pain for you to ship them to me...
