We unexpectedly had trick or treaters! We didn’t put up decorations and I turned out the lights but they still knocked. Luckily I had a bucket of stickers and erasers leftover from last year in the basement so after turning away the first 2 families (which I felt terrible about) I put the bucket out on the porch. I think we had about 5 visits, maybe 10 kids by the sounds of it. We usually get about 50 kids on a non-rainy non-school night. My husband and FIL are the kind of people who assume that if you set something out some kid will steal the whole thing and smash your pumpkins while they’re at it. That has literally never happened. I just collected the mostly-full bucket from the porch. My faith in decency continues. I thought I might make some pages about ancestors today. I think I will make something about the Day(s) of the Dead (and how is has been appropriated) and then make a couple of pages about some family members who have died and what they liked. I chose not to buy mass market Day of the Dead products, but I think it’s interesting to learn more about the various holidays that have turned into our American version of Halloween. It might be fun to print a spring picture from NZ to illustrate why Halloween in the Upside Down makes no sense! I think with a little energy push I can fill out a second booklet. I’m going to try to channel my inner minimalist, or at least try not to overthink printing photos. That’s where I can get bogged down. ETA: just read this and I think I will quote a little bit in my book: www.lataco.com/read-this-before-celebrating-dia-de-muertos-this-year-signed-a-zapotecan-american/

Makes sense to me. I've done skull (not calavera) makeup in the past for Halloween and wear a crowned skeleton necklace through much of October and November (which I forgot to photograph for my OD, ugh) but those are in reference to the European baroque vision and celebration of death. While there are several traditions that interlap and resemble each other (big pots of chrysanthemums to honour the dead, favourite drink of the departed shared by the living to honour them, skull and skeleton imagery), you have to be aware of whether it's part of your heritage or if you're simply using someone else's heritage as entertainement and "fast culture consumption". ETA: What are the traditions and rites of celebrating the dead beyond burial in white America, generally speaking, joblackford? Do people refer to their heritage to find those traditions or did they melt into a more common, typically American set over the years?

ETA: What are the traditions and rites of celebrating the dead beyond burial in white America, generally speaking, joblackford ? Do people refer to their heritage to find those traditions or did they melt into a more common, typically American set over the years? I was just reading about appropriation and I think one of the first steps is to understand the reasons why things are done, where they came from, what they mean to the people whose traditions they are. And then to ask, who is profiting. I have some colorful calavera pillows I made from fabric that did nothing to honor or respect the people of Mexico, their religion or traditions, and that they did not profit from. Now I see that as appropriation. Everything you can buy at Target or the craft store is probably appropriated. I avoid that stuff now. I'm not sure I can speak to America (or even NZ) generally because I think there are regional, family, religious and cultural variations. My family is a bit weird because we don't generally care much about ritual at all, or about what comes after death. My grandfather insisted that no notice be placed in the paper about his death until after his burial or cremation (? I'm not certain which, which illustrates my point, and he just died in the past decade). He didn't want any ritual or religious words said over him, he wrote his own obit, and I think a gravestone was placed for him next to his mother. I think I know where that is, but more because of my interest in genealogy. I've never visited either of them, or any of my grandparents' graves. I have never visited a cemetery to mourn anyone actually. My parents didn't agree with my grandfather - they feel that the gatherings after death should be for the comfort of the people still living, whatever they need, so if they want to pray over a grave what business is it of the dead person? They don't seem to believe in ghosts, or possibly even souls. I'm from some generally atheistic/rationalist/humanist people, which I don't think is typical. Anyway, I definitely know people who visit graves regularly, but I'm not sure if that's regional/cultural, religious, or what. Outside of organized religion, which is sometimes heritage-cultural and sometimes Ameri-generic, I don't know that this culture has many rituals for remembering those we came from and those we've lost.

Well it's been a funny old month here, lots of things happening which have left me feeling overwhelmed, stressed and exhausted (don't we all right now?!) which isn't the way I want to feel at the end of my favourite month, but hey ho, what can you do? I've kept an eye on this thread and it's been the one thing that has kept me going on my OD album, so thanks for being there and brilliant. Here's a few of my favourite spreads, I've lept the album pretty simple (excuse my scrawly handwriting and dodgy photos): That big picture has journalling inside. The other side is below, with a big picture of a Jeremy Deller work on the side of the Royal Festival Hall and also a breakfast in bed made by my daughter and a recording of The News Quiz (the programme isn't being recorded in theatres anymore, obvs, so it's being recorded over Zoom and it's an interesting experience being an audience member) Japanese page. Coffee, book and snacks from a treat box that I spent far too much money on. A mug! The view from my office! My daughter's birthday. I made the pumpkin cakes, the top picture flips up to show a picture of her birthday party (a Zoom party where they all played Roblox) and a bit of journalling: There are a few more photos here if you fancy a look: www.flickr.com/gp/cornybeard/W48dap I'll update when I get round to it. joblackford and sleepingbooty your albums are incredible! My grandmother died at the end of September and we had her funeral during Oct. Funerals are funny things, aren't they? This one was pretty emotionally charged and there were only a handful of us and while the funeral was hard, afterwards was nice. We couldn't have a wake which was a shame as Grandma still has a few surviving sisters and it would have been nice if we could have all got together but my parents, sisters and I did manage to have a nice meal together and that was lovely and realy helped dad, I think. It ended up being so lovely that the waiter asked what we were celebrating, which was a bit awks, but dad's answer of "we're together for the first time since Christmas" was also true. Anyway, I don't know how to journal any of this. I have made an enveope to put in the album and I think I'll print off some photos and add some journlling and just keep them in there so it's a mini album in my OD. I might not add journalling, I still don't know what to say really. Anyway, hi, my name's Charlotte and I like to overshare.

Charwee I love your October album! (*hangs head in shame having just spotted my unfinished September TN sitting there staring at me*) I think we're in for another even funnier old month, aren't we? I think that I too would want to record your grandmother's funeral, just to remember the little things about the day that might otherwise be lost/forgotten in time. Recording such things isn't easy though - I've usually taken the envelope way but if you've got photos and stuff, then maybe you need more space? Nice view btw - do you work in parliament?

I'll head over and take a look at the rest soon. Here's my take on spilling my guts here and then saying "I don't know what to write." I cut and paste what I just wrote in the thread into a document. I ask myself, would this make sense in the album? I mess around with it a bit, add some extra private details (names, etc), take out stuff I don't need to explain to my family, whatever. Then I print that as my journaling. It may not look much the same when I'm done, or it might be the exact words I shared here. Depends on the intended audience. But I usually approach journaling as "if someone random picked this up, what would I say to explain what they're looking at?" which is pretty much what I write here. Your mileage may vary, but maybe that will be somewhere to start. I'm sorry for your loss. How old was your grandmother? I think we're about the same age (?) and my family is losing that last of that generation too. They have been pretty long lived. If I had been in NZ this year I could've visited with my last great aunt on one branch at another aunt's funeral. When I was home last time I got together with two of her big sisters, who have since passed away in their mid-90s. She's the baby - only 93 or 94 I think. She looks about 70-something so might be the one who makes it into the 100s. Interesting times. I want to sit and have a natter with you about politics and government, maybe after US Election Day. To quote a Kerri Bradford embellishment "I miss precedented times"

Charwee Such pretty pages! I love how you used Hey Pumpkin mixed in with other goodies. That IACB card is *perfection*. And such cute birthday pumpkins... I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Grieving during this pandemic has been particularly hard. I'm glad you got to gather safely and went for dinner with your immediate family. If it's any consolation, I remember that after my grandfather passed, we went for dinner with my aunt and it was such a wonderful time in the midst of all those dark and heavy emotions. We closed the casket together, asked to be allowed to put the special screws in ourselves and went out for Indian food. It was the best decision we could've made. Comfort food is so much more than snacking alone on some vinegar crisps! It's also sharing a festive meal together and laughing through pain, confusion and dreariness. Those pockets and bubbles of relief are so important. I hope you're doing well and that your October album helped you focus on happy times during mourning.

I have some Halloween cards done! I used the offcuts from making my October book plus a sheet of cut aparts. Oct share by jo.blackford, on Flickr Oct share by jo.blackford, on Flickr Once I send a few out to friends I'll have some extra, so if you Halloweenies want one message me your address and I'll try to get them in the mail this week. International is fine, I have postage stamps coming out my ears. (Long Live USPS!) I've tucked this paper pad away to use in my Harry Potter album, but you are inspiring me to snag a few papers for my Halloween album. Love your cards!!!

Currently sticking down photos and picking cards. I think I'll be almost caught up with my OD by the end of the night. For the Nightmare Before Christmas fans, here's a 1950s style Oogie Boogie dress (and I want it!): Wow, thanks for sharing this video. I just subbed to her channel. So talented and fun to watch

Haha! Yay. I've been meaning to make time to watch that wonderful seasonal clip. A perfect way to transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving. I recently read a pretty good history of the Pilgrims... there was no table, or shampoo... eye roll.

WOW! As I said the other day, I WISHHHH I had known about this wonderful thread wayy back in September! There was only one thread about Halloween decor on NSBR, and it had so few posts. I kept bumping it, hoping more peeps would post, but...nope! Oh well, I'm having a blast reading this thread now! I just LOVE all the Halloween projects you're all doing, all the decorations, the chat about Halloween, the creepy dolls and clowns and as always---sleepingbooty's gifs, movie trailers, etc. I want to make so. many. comments, but it would take for. ev. er. ! I'm on page 14 and my falling asleep at my desk. Must. stop. reading! Thanks for this fun thread, I look forward to reading more!

Here's my take on spilling my guts here and then saying "I don't know what to write." I cut and paste what I just wrote in the thread into a document. Ha, as I pressed "post" I had a thought of "oh, there's my journaling"! Would love to talk to you about politics and goverment one day, Jo. Grandma was 94 I think, the same age as the Queen she would always say, so she had a good innings! That Kerri Bradford quote is PERFECT. I hope you're doing well and that your October album helped you focus on happy times during mourning. I really did. I always forget that creating is a form of self care and I should really do it more. Your Grandfather's funeral sounds lovely actually, I've not ever come across putting the screws in before and that and closing the casket sounds incredibly special, I would love to have a conversation about how funerals differ around the world, but that would be derailing the thread even more, but I find it fascinating. And comfort food all the way, we went for Italian. scrappintoee welcome to the thread! It's a good place to be

That October album that I did not do daily is realllly close to being finished! I wish other life would stop getting in the way, BUT I was happy that I left it a little while because I got an opportunity to capture a spiderweb picture to tell the story of seeing a giant spider shadow on Halloween night. One of our little spinners was re-making her home right in front of the security light! I didn't get a picture at the time, but a finished web in the same spot will work just fine.

I bound my pages into a book, sort of. No covers yet, but the signatures are attached to a spine, so I can actually page through them now, and I could put it in a shelf and call it done. And I think I know how to add the cover pieces. October album by jo.blackford, on Flickr One of the central pages showing the binding and some cool die cuts I added to channel my inner Skellinton.October album by jo.blackford, on Flickr Between the two signatures. I should’ve made more signatures with fewer pages. When I started adding the spine piece, which is chipboard, I didn’t think to cover it with patterned paper at first, so I had to re-do that. But now I have cool bats in between the two signatures. October album by jo.blackford, on Flickr Back page and a closer look at the spine piece. I wish I had wrapped the paper around the edges, but it won’t matter once I put the covers on. Probably. October album by jo.blackford, on Flickr Still planning to share a flip through eventually.

Ok friends, the sun came out, and then I remembered I can't juggle a camera and flipping pages anyway, so I set up my shotbox and filmed a flip-through properly. No sound. I had a bunch of extra pages after the 31st so it gets pretty random at the end but who cares? It's done (bar the covers). And it's pretty cute with those Nightmare Before Christmas die cuts scattered though (from Berry Sweet Plans on Etsy). Oct/Halloween album flip by jo.blackford, on Flickr
