The suburbs around me have all issued statements saying if you don’t have power you probably won’t get it back until Thursday at the earliest, there’s nothing they can do, and if you decide to drive somewhere and get in a wreck it will be “a significant period of time” before any help can arrive. In addition to the City of Ft Worth, at least 4 other cities have had to issue boil water notices. Restaurants must close, so there’s nowhere to get food. The cities have just basically said “May the odds be ever in your favor.” I am so sorry. My friend in Roanoke said the same thing. Did you leave for your sisters house? Edit: just saw you left. I’m glad you got out. It sounds like hell.

I’ve checked in with as many friends and family as I can in Texas. I have people all spread out in the state and everyone I’ve been able to get ahold of have either lost power or cell service, but still have water in the mean time. I’m especially worried for my cousin who lives out in a small, rural town. She has two small children and it’s been really tough to keep everyone warm with no power. I’m sitting in my home realizing I don’t have a fireplace, or a traditional HVAC system. There’s no need for it, so if something like this happened in my area I’d be screwed! We only use space heaters and our small wall heater in our hallway to warm up our house in the rare days we need the heat.
I hope anyone who was being snippy about the lack of preparation or winter supplies has realized how short sighted they were being. It would be like me, a lifelong Southern California resident wondering why your buildings aren’t retrofitted for earthquakes. Why would they be? Earthquakes aren’t common all over the country.

I am so angry. Most of my family lives in the Abilene/Colorado City area. And the Colorado City mayor posted this on his FB account. They've had no water and electricity since Sunday. View Attachment Did he really write this, or was he hacked? Do we know? It seems so tone deaf, esp. for a politician.

It would be like me, a lifelong Southern California resident wondering why your buildings aren’t retrofitted for earthquakes. Why would they be? Earthquakes aren’t common all over the country. I think Texas residents should be beyond livid that their power plants were not properly winterized. While the scale is definitely unprecedented, the lack of proper winterization has been a known issue for decades. Outages in 1989, 2001 and 2014 were all tied to powerplants being tripped from cold weather. And if you look at the record temperatures, most of the areas HAVE seen similar temperatures in the past - granted not usually the whole state at once or for as long. Your earthquake analogy is actually pretty good when it comes to comparable rarity and I guarantee you the power plants in California are designed for a severe earthquake even if they haven't yet experienced it. Now the grid would have certainly been stressed with the extreme cold for such a wide portion of the state - but the ERCOT CEO just said more than 1/3 of the expected power generation is still down - that's some serious bullshit there. Add in their refusal to comply with federal regulations and therefore inability to draw power from neighboring grids - yeah they mucked up and there should be hell to pay.

View AttachmentI’m trying to figure out what he expects people to do. I’m assuming that there weren’t enough generators available for everyone that is without power to purchase. That snd they are expensive and then to have enough fuel to keep them going all week. Most people have some water for emergencies but not enough for a week. So he thinks people should somehow planned ahead and had generator with enough fuel to keep their houses warm for a week? Had water and known that the roads wouldn’t be passable for a week. Know that there would be boil water orders. I’m all for not expecting the government to bail me out but this weather is extreme and it sounds like it is much worse than even the experts expected. Most people have food and limited water but no way to keep their houses warm for extended periods of time. I would be so pissed if he was an elected official in my area. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect power and water service I don’t consider that socialism. I think they expected some disruption but nothing like what is currently happening. What a piece of }%<<.

Did he really write this, or was he hacked? Do we know? It seems so tone deaf, esp. for a politician. He wrote this. His wife claims he was hacked, but I dont think so. He's always had an attitude like this (he just didn't normally post it on FB). His wife defended him and says he is at his wits end. But then said he was hacked. They've all deleted their FB pages now. Wow. I am gobsmacked. What a horrible screed. I hope that he isn’t re-elected, because he sure doesn’t seem to want to help people-or have empathy.

We made it to my sister’s house The roads were BAD because the layer of snow that had become slush has frozen over again so now there’s a thick layer of ice on top of the snow. And all of the signal lights were out. My youngest son came to me and said “mom, looks at my toes, they’re red and they hurt like they’re burning.” Y’all, my kids were getting frostbite INSIDE my house. That was when we decided we had to leave. I’m glad you made it somewhere warm and safe.

View AttachmentJust Bull, totally off the mark. Some people don't even know what socialism is. What a winner they have for a mayor.
It is not socialism when you sign a contract to PAY for electricity and water. The wind turbines were not built to withstand these temps, nuclear power generators were not built to withstand these temps and so on. Because Texas decided it did not want to have to comply with federal regulations, they did not allow power grids to cross state lines. I wonder if it was also because they did not want to have to share power when other states needed it? no proof about that but just wondering. Federal regulations, which some would say is part of socialism, and/or big government taking care of you, would have possibly prevented this.
Having been part of an electric co-op and a water co-op in an rural area for a few years and comparing the prices we paid back then and the prices we pay now I know we are paying for what we get. Government is NOT subsidizing our electricity and water.

Praying for all of you....this northerner hopes things get better soon. A dear friend is in Anna TX and has been without power since Monday. She did fill a tub with water for the toilets because she said their community's wells/pumps run on electricity. This weather across the nation has been wacky.

Yep. Thats the mayor. I was friends with his wife (I used to live in Colorado City) on FB before she deleted her account. She is now saying he was hacked....but that was after the post hit the fan. Lol. French teenagers, obviously. Meanwhile in Houston, all the Trumpers in town are blaming our Democratic city and county government for the lack of power, no matter how many times Greg Abbott tweets out about ERCOT. And of course Fox has them all convinced it’s solely a wind turbine problem. in Colorado the people on fb are blasting wind and solar energy because it obviously didn't work here and if we had more coal, oil, and gas this wouldn't have happened 🙄

Well crap. I’m scheduled to work on Thursday. I made a hotel reservation for Wednesday night. The hotel just called to tell me they had multiple water pipes burst and are unable to honor reservations. There are no other hotels near the hospital that have rooms available. The lady who called about my reservation said they were checking with hotels in the area but others were booked up or without power. There is nowhere to sleep at the hospital because beds are full of COVID patients. If I don’t find a room, I will just have to call in. I hate to do it, I am not risking my life for a job.
ETA: I live 30 miles from the hospital and we are getting more snow and ice tonight.

Still no power for me, and water pressure is just a trickle. Yay! Cell service is also super crappy right now at the house, probably due to towers with no power, so I’m sitting in a parking lot where the power is on to check messages and stuff. DH is going to try to get the generator going but it seems a little pointless as we can’t use it in the rain, and it’s supposed to start up with freezing rain again tonight. I've never had a generator, why don't they work in the rain?

We did get it going, though, and currently have two lamps and the wifi plugged in. We’ll shut it down and move it into the covered patio before we go to bed. If power is still out in the morning, we’ll plug in the coffee maker.

In North Fort Worth and we have had power but since yesterday afternoon no water. When we get it back we are required boil it. We have 2 5 gallon buckets of water (from melting snow) to use for the toilets.
I feel like we are in the dark ages. Round 2 of the storm starts tonight. We have 2 generators fueled up and ready to go but this is ridiculous.
I’m so sorry for folks that don’t have power. It is entirely too cold to go without heat when it is zero degrees outside.

We finally got power again this afternoon - 37 hours after we lost it. I was checking into a nearby hotel. Just as I handed the desk clerk my credit card I received a text from DH that said “we have electricity!”. What are the odds! Keeping the hotel room for 3 days because our water pressure is extremely low and I don’t trust the power to stay on right now.
Had to throw out over half of the stuff in the refrigerator and a few things in the freezer. Fortunately all the meat and seafood was still rock hard.
DD ended up joining me because her apartment building cut off the water due to a burst pipe. She has had power the whole time though.
I’m hearing of more people getting power turned back on, but also hearing of others who lost it today. Hoping this is all over by the weekend.

I am done. My mayor is now on tv telling people natural gas is freezing at the source (I guess at the plants?) and there is not enough to go around. No showers, baths, using ovens if you dont have to, keep your house below 68.
I am just so freaking done with this.

After telling people yesterday that fossil fuel plants were a bigger part of our power failure than frozen turbines (this has been confirmed by independent sources as well), Abbott is now on Fox reassuring his big oil donors that it’s really AOC’s fault.
