I’ve been worried about our Texas peas so I’m glad you’re checking in. I experienced a 5-day outage a few years back, which was miserable but the temperatures weren’t as bad as what you’re going through.

If anyone is interested, ‘The Daily’ (NYT, not to be confused with ‘The Daily Show’) did a short podcast today about the power situation in TX. In my opinion it was worthwhile listening to if you’re not familiar with TX power and this mess. The meat of it was only 15-20 minutes.
Boy, y’all have an uphill battle to prepare for the next time something like this occurs. Hoping everyone is keeping warm-ish this evening.
ETA: just now reading posts from the last few hours. Ugh you guys! So sorry it’s still miserable, and I hope my last sentences didn’t seem trite.

Update from SE Houston: We're okay over here. My power and water have stayed on (albeit lower pressure on the water since yesterday) and I have internet so I've been working.
Most of my colleagues aren't as lucky. One coworker was supposed to fly to Turkey yesterday to meet his wife and son then fly back (she's Russian and had been visiting family) but his flight was canceled. She's supposed to fly back starting today. Hopefully they can make it back - it's a 30 hour trip without delays.
DD's boss was insisting last night they would be working today even if they didn't open the shop for customers, and even if he had to pick her up. Well, that didn't happen because the shop's power was out today. Aw. Her apartment was 43 degrees this morning, so she and the cats went to her BF's apartment. She messaged me around lunchtime all excited that his hot water was working again!
DS went to work this morning (in Sugarland) to find high temperature alarms going off on all the equipment (they're all either water or nitrogen cooled). Main chiller on the roof was down, and the nitrogen tanks they filled on Saturday were at 20%. The lines from the main tanks outside had ruptured. He was on the roof trying to get the chiller back online. They replaced pipes (well as best they could) and someone went down to turn it on. When they did, he heard a whoosh and yelled to shut it off. Opened it up to find the radiator (or whatever it really is called) had ruptured. Production is shut down until they can get those repaired and assess any additional damage. He and his buddy will be going in still (if road conditions permit) because they have several projects they're behind on - perfect time to catch up on those.
My aunt and brother are fine (aunt is local, brother is in Dallas). My sister still has to deal with the ruptured pipes (and hopefully not a busted well pump). Even if she could get out (which she can't because of the roads), she can't leave the dogs, donkeys and lambs to fend for themselves.

Our power is on since about an hour ago but I doubt it will last through the night. Our water is at a trickle. What I wouldn’t give to take a shower but I doubt that’s going to happen tonight. Stay safe and warm everyone. If we can just make it til Saturday...

yivit My like is an acknowledgment of your post. I live in a cold climate area and feel so badly for everyone who is dealing with this storm in Texas and beyond. Being in a situation where there is no experience and, from what I have read, no real leadership is awful! I really hope that people can take the time and write down everything that they wished they had at home and then get together a plastic bin and put in necessities, as time & money will allow. Also as Merge said on another thread, learn where the water, gas, etc shut-offs are in your home. Make sure that your fire/smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order. In my area, the authorities suggest making these checks every time the clock changes. I also suggest that you can buy a stronger anti-freeze for your cars from Amazon or ask for it from an auto parts store. That will be the next surprise for many people --- finding out that the lines are frozen in their car or have burst due to the low quality of the anti-freeze in the lines in their cars. Many ( ( ( hugs and warm wishes ) ) ) to everyone in this historic situation.

Checking in from the west side of Fort Worth: My power went out at 8 AM Monday. They'd talked about rolling blackouts to conserve electricity, but after several hours I figured out it was more serious than that. I stuck it out until Wednesday afternoon and then went to stay with a friend who had electricity.
My power came back on this afternoon around 4 so I was able to come home. Before I left my son and I put bowls of snow inside the refrigerator and all the food seems OK. I'm thankful it wasn't worse and that I had a generous friend who was willing to share her home.
Before the weather hit I did go on a grocery run. The store shelves looked like they did at the start of the pandemic. Lots of items were sold out. I had to go to 2 stores to get milk and when I did find it, it was one of the last gallons.
I hope everyone else is staying warm and safe.

Update from the Panhandle of Texas -
It got to about 23 today, so things are improving on the cold side of things. No rolling blackouts today either. I got out for the first time today and our roads are snow packed and ok to drive but by the time they freeze tonight they will be slick in the am. We still have huge concerns about the natural gas available. Our gas co called my DH at work today and asked if his company could turn their thermostats down to below 68 to save energy. Our schools and colleges have all closed til Monday to help save gas. The only resteraunt I saw open was closing early. I had to get some antibiotics picked up at Walgrreeens and they were the only business I saw that had lights and cars there. One more day of cold, and then we should be in the clear.

Oh hell some of us went to BED in that outfit!!! Here in San Antonio, we are in a rental because we got flooded out of our house on Jan. 7th. We have water for the most part, couldn't get out of the driveway until today. Too much ice on a very, very steep slope that slopes toward the house. We slept in two layers of fleece and with hats and gloves on the other night. Last night we had power for about 3 hours which helped a lot. As I type this I'm waiting for the power to go off again. The stove here is electric so no hot food if there's no power. It's bad here, people, really, really bad.

I have to say the worst part of this for me right now is the combination of just a trickle of water and the boil water order. Boiling water to wash dishes and then trying to have enough boiled water to wash and rinse them, and wipe down the counter and clean the sink, is a major PITA. Never mind that we haven’t showered in 2 days now.
We have power, thank goodness. For as long as it lasts.

Power came back on this morning. We have a burst pipe and can’t quite locate it yet, DH and DS can cap it off once they locate it and then turn the power back on. My other DS can help will the plumbing and drywall repairs next week when he is back in town. We had a hotel reservation for tonight and were going to all get showers and then use the washing machines and wash a few clothes but the hotel cancelled us as people who were staying refused to leave even though they had not paid for their stay are reserved for tonight’s. Quite a number of people are doing this to the hotels right now. We do have some friends that invited us over tomorrow to use their showers so hopefully they will keep their power and water and all will work out😁 I don’t really have any complaints, about our situation, I grew up country poor, so this just has me relying on what I knew as I grew up. My DH is a city boy and both he and DH are having a little harder time adapting even though they spent many years in boys scouts. My daughters did Girl Scouts and I swear we prepped them better for situations like this,

My Girl Scout daughter has been an absolute trooper and MAJOR helper during this debacle. I feel like as Girl Scouts ( 10 years as a Scout and 8 as a Leader) we were prepared to "live" in the outdoors, not try and conquer it as Boy Scouts seems to do. I have only DDs so never was a Boy Scout. Wishing warm weather for all your Texans.

We still don’t have heat.
Power finally came on at 9:22 last night, but the heater won’t come on.
Still in the 30s inside my house after 3 straight days of no power.

I don't think you need to waste boiled water on washing and rinsing dishes, as long as you let them dry completely before you use them. Last time we had to boil our water here we were told to use it only for drinking, brushing teeth, making coffee, etc. They did specifically tell us to let dishes dry before using them.

We had a new Aldi open this morning. We were able to get bottled water, bread, nut milk, salad and fruit. Thank goodness, because all stores around here are out of everything, or not selling perishables due to power outages. Their stuff won't last long, though!

One article here said to treat it like floodwater. Having dealt with that, I wouldn’t wash my dishes in floodwater, KWIM?

@merge - Spent a couple of years living in Africa where we had to boil water & filter it daily for pretty much everything. We did not use the boiled water for dishes and nothing awful happened. If you are truly concerned about it, do a bleach rinse on the dishes once you have washed them. Let them air dry completely before using them again. We had to use the bleach rinse for all our vegetables that couldn’t be peeled and lived to tell the story! ![](http://stevengale.smugmug.com/Other/Peasmilies/i-v9P6jMF/0/O/laugh.gif) . Instructions here
