Not only are the the climate change deniers claiming this winter storm is proof that it’s non existent. Now, supporters of the oil and gas industry are blaming wind power for the electricity shortages. I thought this video clip on PBS was interesting, it makes even more sense now in light of Abbott’s claims. The Republicans never miss an opportunity to blame Democrats, especially AOC for anything under the sun. www.pbs.org/newshour/show/millions-remain-without-power-in-frigid-temperatures-after-major-winter-stormSo sorry for those of you affected by the storm. I hope your power is restored soon. Stay warm!

ALL of the energy providers in Texas - wind, gas, oil, nuclear, etc. - never winterized their equipment. The wind turbines do not have heat coils installed like colder areas of the world have done. The gas, oil and nuclear sites need water to run but the water sources were frozen. You can't just create power, transmit it, and throw it onto the grid without the grid having "space" to accept it or you run the risk of melting the transmission wires which is even more of a problem. Managing the power grid is a balancing act of what you can or cannot do based on current load and timing.
Texas wasn't prepared for a full-on winter storm of this magnitude because we've never had one this bad that affected the entire state. It is highly likely someone (or some people) will lose their job over this cluster.
As for the rant by the mayor of Colorado City, TX - I really think that is a man who tried to do a good thing by running for office, was treated like crap by constituents, and the stress and frustration of everything that has happened this past year got the best of him. Should he have ranted on social media? No. But I get his rant.

We’ve lucked out in that our electricity has only gone off for, at most, 3 hours at a time; and it keeps going on and off in intervals. Right now it’s every other hour for an hour or so. We don’t have a fireplace but running the heat while we have electricity is on is keeping us around 53*. I’m fine, still sleeping au natural, DH is in full pjs with a hoodie, hat, gloves and socks...and the heater when we have power. Our main problem is that we both use CPAP machines and can’t really sleep without them. Meant to purchase machines to power them after reading about CA last year, but of course never got around to it. Had no idea it was coming this far south until late Friday night when I tried to put our weekly grocery curbside order in and there were no slots for almost a week. So I had to go research why, because around here people act like we are not in the middle of a Pandemic. We are okay though, have just enough fresh veggies and plenty of frozen foods, just no dairy for a bit. Gas stove so we are able to cook, and a gas water heater so we can shower. Thankfully we haven’t had water issues, hadn’t even considered it, so I just filled a tub with water after reading about y’all’s issues. And hope it doesn’t become a problem because we drink filtered water from the fridge, literally the only other thing we have to drink is some Gatorade in our ‘sick food’ bag. DH is the only rehab person that lives in town so he is still going in, just really late and gets off before traffic or it gets dark. No bridges to go over, just a few back roads and he has had no issues, thankfully. All in all, we have really been fortunate. Ours is on 57 and we’re all chilling in tank tops 🤣 I think I’d pass out if I set the heat all the way up to 68. Super nosey question.... but if ur house doesn't get above 60... how freakin high is your electric bill in the summer??? Its really hard to keep our house cool in the summer... i could not imagine paying to keep it under 60 I’m about 4 or 5 hours south of myshelly , and we keep our a/c set around 62*-63* year round. Some years we turn our heater on just a few times and never for long. For a 2400 sq ft 2-story home, our cost in the winter is less than $60 and around $200-$250 in the summer for a few months. Well worth it. Personally, I’ll take the cold over the heat any day. You can keep adding layers to warm up, but you can only get so naked.

I'm so ready for this freak weather to be done with! Houston's way of controlling the power really sucks. I guess I have it better than some, but it still sucks. My power is only on between the hours of 10:30pm and 8:00am. So no heat, internet, or cell service(including texting} from 8:00am to 10:30pm. I stay up late to do laundry, run the dishwasher, take a shower, get online and make phone calls/texts ect when it comes on. Then I make sure I wake up with enough time to fix some coffee and breakfast before it goes off again. Could be worse...at least my pipes haven't burst like my neighbor's did. Ticks me off that it comes on after the nightly news is over. I mean, come on! Kick it on at 10 so I can watch the news for pete's sake!

Well Texas, this is what your elected officials think of you. You’re “lazy” and heat and water are “handouts”! WTF! Here is a follow up response from him I saw on Reddit All, I have set back and watched all this escalating and have tried to keep my mouth shut! I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning. Believe me when I say that many of the things I said were taken out of context and some of which were said without putting much thought in to it. I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves. I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout. I apologize for the wording and some of the phrases that were used! I had already turned in my resignation and had not signed up to run for mayor again on the deadline that was February 12th! I spoke some of this out of the anger that the city and county was catching for situations which were out of their control. Please understand if I had it to do over again I would have just kept my words to myself and if I did say them I would have used better wording and been more descriptive. The anger and harassment you have caused my wife and family is so undeserved....my wife was laid off of her job based off the association people gave to her and the business she worked for. She’s a very good person and was only defending me! But her to have to get fired from her job over things I said out of context is so horrible. I admit, there are things that are said all the time that I don’t agree with; but I would never harass you or your family to the point that they would lose there livelihood such as a form of income. I ask that you each understand I never meant to speak for the city of Colorado City or Mitchell county! I was speaking as a citizen as I am NOT THE MAYOR anymore. I apologize for the wording and ask that you please not harass myself or my family anymore! Threatening our lives with comments and messages is a horrible thing to have to wonder about. I won’t share any of those messages from those names as I feel they know who they are and hope after they see this they will retract the hateful things they have said! Thank you Tim Boyd(citizen) ************************ He is a complete idiot.

We’re in Virginia, many people without power from last Friday, being overshadowed by Texas...but anyway. 😂 The exact same storm is coming our way. Again. I get you. Bur you got this. We’ve done the burst pipes, no water, no power for weeks before. You got this cause we all got this! Hang in there!

Yes you can, and you will. This will pass. I know it stinks. This isn't anything southerners are used to but just like everything else, you will get through it. Big hugs. The problem with this round is that the ice can and will take down power lines. It's one thing to be in a rolling or controlled blackout where it CAN come back on. It's a completely different thing to have the lines physically down. So far I'm still okay power- and water- wise. Water pressure dropped yesterday afternoon though - I'm betting it's because it warmed up just enough for a lot of frozen pipes to thaw. Lots of the area is now under a boil water notice. Galveston County ordered refrigerated trucks to handle bodies. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) 90% of the island has been without power since this started. Y'all, the BEACH was covered in snow and ice! Hugs to everyone.

katybee I'm sorry you are stressed by the circumstances you find yourself in. Maybe if you can put a few things in place it might feel like you have some control. If I was in your position, I would consider doing some things like this, Reduce the living/eating/sleeping space to the smallest room. Ideally one with no outside wall. If the room is still too big create false walls, like upend a sofa or something, to capture whatever heat you can generate. Make a sofa cushion igloo, bring down an mattress, sleep with a hat and socks on. Have you any camping gear you can utilise? Layers are better than one big jumper. And remember you will get through it.

We’re expecting this storm y’all are getting will take the exact same path and many of those residents still don’t have power nor do thousands of others. Today is gorgeous (truly the calm before the storm) and they’re trying to evacuate people who still don’t have power to safer places before dark. Even in the south, these storms are unprecedented.

I'm so over this. I have always hated cold, winter, snow, ice, etc! I'll take 110 degrees over this any day. I'd rather sweat than freeze! I moved south to get away from this. Even in OK, we never had to go this long without power. I'm still ready to head to OKC where they have power!

DH decided to stay at the house last night since the power had come back on. Checked in with him just now. He said we lost power 3 times during the night, then it would come back on. Lost it again about 8 am and it is still off. So far our pipes are okay. If/when he comes back over to the hotel he will shut off the main line to the house and bleed the lines.
Stay safe everyone! This ice storm is just making things worse.

Just checking in.
We still have power here and have never lost it but we have taken everything down to the bare minimum to try and help. We have water but the pressure is low so we did fill up the bathtub just in case. Many around us still without power or it comes and goes.
We did drive the 15 miles to my mom’s house yesterday and got her to bring her to our house so she’s safe and warm as long as we have power. We have a fireplace and have been using that. The roads were bad driving to her house but are a lot worse today after the ice storm overnight and today.
Stay safe, everyone. I hope the power and water comes back soon for those without.

Our closest Kroger and the second closest is completely out of milk and bread, and are not selling perishable items.Target said the same thing. There are two stores in the area that people are saying do have this things, so we are going to get out and see what happens. We tried ordering from Amazon, but they have no delivery options.

Update from Houston: DH and I went out earlier and scored gas for the generator after sitting in line for about 30 minutes. I also went in and bought four large bottles of drinking water to add to our stock, since Houston is now on a boil water order.
A friend went out to H‑E‑B and waited a long time to get in, and when she did, the shelves were basically bare.
School is now canceled through Friday for us. I suspect that will be extended for some schools as they get in to buildings and find water damage from burst pipes over the weekend. And of course, we will have many thousands of students whose homes have been damaged or are suffering for other reasons.
My house has had power since early this morning and it hasn’t - knock on wood - gone out yet. We don’t expect that to last and are prepared for it to go out again. We still don’t have more than a trickle of water from any faucet except, oddly, the pot-filler faucet over the stove. That one seems normal. So we have used that to fill my two largest cooking pots to with water and boiled it on the gas stove to use for washing dishes.

I can't imagine when schools will be able to open at this point. Our district has already said that they will need time for safety checks in all the buildings once the utilities are back.
