People were not hysterical (gender-coded language there intentional) when they said that the Kavanaugh and Barrett appointments were going to be the end of Roe.
Here we are.

I think the filibuster arguments are on thin ground.. ie there are no republicans to be persuaded to act in cooperation. we need to pass the women's health act, the voter's act, all the other democratic bills through senate and biden should consider adding a couple of people to court.. if those there will not hold up our constitutional rights.
otherwise we will not have a democracy left

Several US law podcasts, blogs and articles had predicted this outcome and said not to hold out hope. Here we are. No surprise.
My heart goes out to all US women. This is a dark day that will have severe consequences.

Well, ladies, here we are in a big old mess. Even if you were pro birth, do you really approve of some creepy pro birther being able to sue people who help a woman to get an abortion? This is actually beyond creepy. It is encouraging citizens to spy on one another.
What now? That is up for debate, but I would argue that Congress must take on voting rights FIRST. Actually they should reform the filibuster first IF we can get Manchin and Sinema on board. Then voting rights. Why? In my opinion, because the midterms are coming up next year, we must ensure that Congress does not fall into R hands. If we get that done, Congress must focus on preserving Roe.
The American Taliban has been busy. They want this country to be ruled by white Christians. They want women to carry fetuses to term, no matter how they were conceived. They want to carry guns openly and freely. They like militias. I find all of this outrageous. Do you?
If any of this is not ok with you, I will once again stand on my soapbox and say that you MUST vote in the midterms. You must also cast votes for local and state candidates who reflect your values. Even if your kid has soccer practice. Even if you are busy and exhausted. Even if you have to stand in line for hours.
Because if you don’t vote, and if the Rs win and control state and federal government, we can look forward to more of this bullshit.

For those of you who have not been following this, here is some explanation:
What does the Texas abortion law say? The law, which was passed in May and went into effect Wednesday, says that any pregnancy in which a heartbeat is detected cannot be aborted. That effectively means if you’re six weeks pregnant, you cannot have an abortion in the state of Texas, because that is around when most fetal cardiac activity can be detected. (Doctors opposed to this legislation say that is misleading language, and that the fluttering detected isn’t always necessarily a heartbeat so early in a pregnancy.)
The law makes no exceptions for rape, sexual abuse or incest. The law does something else novel: It effectively incentivizes the public to police abortions. It allows people — anyone living in the state of Texas — to sue an abortion provider or anyone else they suspect is “aiding and abetting” abortions after that six-week mark. And the law sets a $10,000 award for any successful lawsuit to stop an abortion. Taken together, those decisions allowed Texas lawmakers to essentially end abortions in their state, say abortion rights activists. Texas Republicans don’t necessarily deny this. The law, said Gov. Greg Abbott (R) as he signed it in May, “ensures that the life of every unborn child who has a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion.” Abortion rights advocates sued, and a newly ultraconservative Supreme Court declined to put the law on hold while lower courts argue the merits.
So this law allows what amounts to bounty hunters to sue anyone helping a woman to have an abortion. I am (almost) speechless.

@fmanjoo - how about a law that says you have to get a vaccine but the state isn’t making you do it, it’s just that everyone can sue you if you don’t, and if they win they get $10,000, if you win you get nothing

I keep trying to type something profound but all I have is...FUCK! As part of my job, I am the administrator of an online group for moms who have terminated their pregnancy after receiving a fatal prenatal diagnosis. Several in the group terminated their pregnancy because of their own health, such as severe pre eclampsia, but most have done so because of something devastatingly wrong with the baby they were carrying. This has been a topic of conversation the past day, and it just breaks my heart for them. I am simply gobsmacked that this is where we are in the year 2021. How can we be going so very backwards? And I am going to have to take a break from my FB because seeing my friends and family members reacting with such glee over this truly makes me want to vomit. want to be graphic as hell and ask them if THEY have ever sat with a distraught mother, wracked with tears, who found out her baby had such an awful brain malformation that she could not even function because of her constant worry of him being in pain. Who then had to travel states away, away from her trusted doctors and her loved ones, to terminate a pregnancy she desperately had wanted because the archaic laws in her own state wouldn't allow it. And how she had to make her way through picketers yelling at her that she is a baby killer. Because I have. And I have heard numerous stories just as horrible. To say I am sick about this is an understatement, and I envision more states being emboldened because of this bull$hit in Texas. I can totally see this happening in my own state.

My heart hurts today. I sit here and try to think of how to put words to all the many feelings and thoughts I have about this and I am simply at a loss at how to express it all. Women in the USA should be very afraid at this blatant rubber stamp to allow and endorse other people taking control of their bodies.

I think this will backfire too. All the uninformed and “I don’t do politics“ soccer moms may finally wake the F up and pay attention. Now that the GOP has a broken Roe they might finally mobilize and vote and stop living in their little bubbles.

Females are the majority in this country and yet…
There are women on this very board who are so warped in their thinking that they want to force women to have no control over their own bodies. We have a lot of sick/disturbed women in this country who are actively working to make women powerless. Until we women refuse to put up with the traitors to our gender it will never stop.
If you are friends with an anti-abortionist, if you attend a church that advocates taking women's rights away, if you vote for a representative who is against legal abortions, if you are married or partners with a man who wants to take your rights away, YOU are part of the problem. Until women decide they will ostracize each and every person, male or female, who has an agenda to deny rights to women, it will never change.

But the comments I see on social media indicate that it is actually women who are more strongly opposed to abortion than men. They also don’t seem to understand that not all women who have abortions did so because of unwanted pregnancies. Many have them for the reasons you pointed out but the women I see commenting don’t seem to have any knowledge (or concern?) for that.

My middle DD had an ectopic pregnancy last summer. I'm well acquainted with crazies who think mom's should just die because it's God's Will, many of them in my family who are unaware she had an ectopic pregnancy. Incidentally, it was a much wanted pregnancy. There were no good choices, only the best & right choice.

It is encouraging citizens to spy on one another. Here's the extra messed up layer here. I make no secret, I am very anti-abortion for most situations. And I think this law is despicable and disgusting and won't even accomplish what they want anyway. Also, if they actually really wanted to improve the situation, this bill would have been accompanied by a funding structure to assist these new parents, additional funding to pay to support all the children with severe disabilities who might otherwise have been aborted, have a support network of mental health experts, job training, etc. This bill is disgusting and evil.

Just T , I am soooo sorry that you had to make such a heart-wrenching decision. That TX law is seriously super-f*cked up... encouraging people to spy on their neighbors, and causing people to be monetarily incentivized to bring a lawsuit against someone (with no evidence). ETA: the Twitter hashtag that I saw yesterday is #TexasTaliban. And honestly, it's TRUE-- Those radical American evangelicals have SO MUCH IN COMMON with the Taliban, it's scary. Joy Reid (? I think) interviewed someone yesterday who was involved in the beginnings of that movement 40 years ago (and has since worked to undo what was done) and it was NOT mainly about abortion: it was about racism and rolling back women's rights under the guise of anti-abortion. And this is what we get, now. yay.

One clinic in Dallas closed yesterday. The director there said she was afraid to even say, "Go to another state" because she was afraid she would be charged with helping someone get an abortion. The Planned Parenthood director went ahead and told patients, "You will have to go to another state."
