I'm a bit in shock right now. My daughter told me about it tonight when I was visiting her. I love my grandson so much. We've been really concerned about him lately because he has asked to go to the hospital because of suicidal ideation, not being because of the gay thing. He was basically abandoned by his biological parents and it is tearing him up. My daughter was married to his father and said father left him with her. He's almost 14 and she has raised him since he was two years old. He's making friends at the psych hospital and seems to be ok at the moment.

Oh that's tough. I really hope that his hospital treatment helps him to realise that he is valued and loved and that his sexuality is just part of who he is.

Love and prayers to you and your family. Trite as it sounds, the teen years can be so difficult, especially for children who have biological family considerations. Hoping he can get the help he needs and feels the love and support of family and friends in this tough time.

I'm so sorry to hear that your grandson and family are in so much pain.
It sounds like you are all doing the best you can to help him. Just continue to let him know that he is loved and that he matters.

I'm so sorry. It's a tough age to be in even in the best of circumstances. But he has reached out and is aware he needs help. Sending you all my positive energy! I hope your DD is doing OK too. Being a parent in this situation must be really hard aswell.

I'm sorry, it is a shock to the system to realise that someone you love is so upset and despairing that suicide becomes an option for them. Something to be aware of, often it takes time to find the right and most helpful combination of medication, both brand and dosage. Some medications can make matters worse. One practical thing your daughter can do, clear the fridge door of all magnets, notes, photos etc. Agree with her son that if he feels that he is struggling and needs help, then he puts a magnet on the fridge door. It indicates, without the need to talk, that help is needed asap. He has been abandoned twice, I wonder if he feels that being gay means more people are going to turn their back on him. A friend of mine has been through something similar. Her grandson is gay and has attempted suicide twice - the 2nd time, they were really afraid he wouldn't make it, but he did. Thank goodness they were able to get the correct medicine for him (eventually) and a good therapist. It has been about 6 months and he is doing much better.

I'm so sorry that he's in so much pain right now. But I am so relieved to hear that he asked for help on his own. One of the teens in my family recently reached out in a similar way. The underlying reasons were different, but the result was them expressing thoughts of self-harm. They were in-patient at a specialized hospital for adolescents for a little over a week and have been seeing a therapist regularly since then, but are now doing well. I hope & pray that your grandson can find the right help for him to start to feel some relief. Hugs to all of you.

I’m glad that he made the good choice to check into a hospital, rather than suicide. I think that says a lot about him and his strength - it is a really good thing.
If you have any specific questions or advice, there are a lot of parents of grandparents of LQBTQ children here - please let the board help you help him.

What a brave young man to reach out for help. So many young people just can't deal with their lives and think suicide is the only answer. Your dear grandson has been through a lot, and certainly is justified in feeling abandoned. Please keep on telling him how much he is loved by you and your daughter.
