The divide has become greater, and yes both sides have been inappropriate. Your periodic reminder that there aren't always two VALID sides. Sometimes there is ONE. Sometimes there are six. "Both sides"-ism is lazy and uninformed thinking. Even when discussing political parties (if that's what your "sides" refers to), there are not monolithic ideas on either "side". Please just stop w/the "both sides" nonsense. ps - Some "sides" bring facts, data, evidence, research, to the table. Some "sides" bring beliefs or opinions or "my cousin's trainer said..."

I love this blog. And he nails this concept on this post about Joe Rogan, and false balance Worth a read. TFS. Here is an analogy for those who just don't get it. One person says "It's raining at lat/long 37.8136° S, 144.9631° E" right now. One person says "No it's not. It's completely dry". There is in fact a REALITY at that lat/long for how much precip is hitting the ground at a particular location. We don't have to present "both sides" on a weather report. We report REALITY - usually w/confidence levels because weather is complex and location specific. We don't care what cousin Edgar thinks as to the precip at that location and what he feels "in his bones" or how "it was raining just a few minutes ago" or "It looks like rain". It is either RAINING or NOT RAINING - where raining has a scientific definition - usually about precip hitting the ground in a particular location at a particular time. If it's NOT RAINING, then it might be hailing instead, or sleeting, or snowing, or bone dry. But there is a reality. To pretend that all issues have TWO SIDES and only those TWO SIDES, however valid or invalid, must be presented and must be the ONLY "sides" presented is beyond ridiculous.

You are so correct that there are more than two sides, the are many facets to opinions, but scientifically proven facts are often considered reality. However, there are many cases where what was considered fact, after much research is found to be not necessarily true. Current research on Type 1 Diabetes is showing the viruses and perhaps even Covid can be an attributing factor, where before it was considered mostly genetic. Case in point in most of our lifetimes stomach ulcers were thought to be caused by stress. An Australian doctor claimed otherwise, was ostracized by the medical community as he continued to do his research. He eventually won the Nobel prize for the discovery that most stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria! Nobel prize winner

And I believe AOC was visiting her mother, correct? A little bit different then fleeing your state for a warmer climate during a freezing weather event that killed over 200 people and left millions without power. And AOC did not respond appropriately, IMHO, but TC blamed his kids for his little trip. Leaving for warmer climates while people died from the weather. Leaving for laxer covid restrictions while people died and hospitalized at record numbers. Taking care of his kids. Visiting her mother. Yeah, it's all in how you frame it. He didn't "blame" his kids, he simply said "he was being a dad". Occasionally, when you're a dad/mom, that will happen. The dad or mom hat comes on. He also admitted it was a mistake to go at that time. He should have known that before he made that choice, but at least he admitted it was a mistake to do and not defending it. The mental gymnastics that you do to convince yourself that you are right and everyone else is wrong is just mind boggling to me.

That's because SCIENCE unlike RELIGION changes as the facts, methods, tools, etc. change. That is why I trust the consensus of peer-reviewed SCIENCE (even though it can be changed in the future) vs. the dictates of RELIGION (which is "eternal" truth (bs)).

I agree with your first statement. As for the second, RELIGION is interpreted by by fallible humans, and many things change in religious communities depending on how it is being interpreted. Hence the large number of different faith communities. Just my thoughts.

It's mental gymnastics when you try to justify what Republicans are doing these days. It may be. It's also mental gymnastics when you try to justify hypocrisy of AOC and hypocrisy in general. And if everyone around you disagrees with you, maybe you need to reconsider. Not everyone around me disagrees. If you mean here on the board, this is not representative of the rest of the world, so the echo chamber here could hardly be the deciding factor of reality. If it's mental gymnastics for me to justify, it's certainly mental gymnastics for you to justify when your girl is being a major turd of a hypocrite. You're right. In this instance I won't. I have yet to see her consider or internalize any points that are made to show her the idiocy of false equivalences. Sorry you missed the times when I have admitted I got it wrong. Doesn't mean I have not done so.

AOC didn't break any rules. No one's saying she did, but she's guilty of being a horrible human. She condemned Cruz with "fled his home state and responsibilities during a crisis to seek refuge in Mexico" and "maybe Mexico shouldn't let YOU in next time you try to run away from your job to sip umbrella drinks in Cancun." Then she turned around and did the same damn thing she condemned him for during her state's historic record of Covid cases hitting, just substitute Miami for Cancun as she's snapped "fleeing her crisis state to sip cocktails" and "avoid any of her responsibilities". She fled her own state with "such great covid policies" for a state with policies she condemns. She's a hypocrite. Then she accuses DeSantis of being missing from HIS job. During the holidays. Turns out he was assisting his wife with her cancer treatments and attending to their 3 small children. Did she apologize for condemning him when she didn't know wtf she was talking about? Then when people point out her hypocrisy and basically being the asshat she accuses others of being, her answer is "people are only mad because they want to date her?!!!" She really doesn't do herself any favors in her asshattery or her response to it being pointed out. You really do suck at your comparisons. I’m not even sure why you dragged Ted Cruz into this because you are, once again, comparing apples to oranges. I’m not a fan of AOC. But honestly this was much ado about nothing. Her crime she was seen in an outdoor restaurant or bar and wasn’t wearing a mask. I’m sure if you do a survey of outdoor restaurants and bars you will find the majority of folks aren’t wearing masks because they are eating and drinking. Now I have never tried it but I think it would be darn near impossible to eat or drink with a mask on. Her other crime was she “gasp” flew to Florida. Some say she went to see her mother during the holidays. But even if that was not the reason so what? If you were paying attention you would know millions of Americans were on the move during the holidays. As to her not staying in NY during the latest surge. What exactly do you expect her to do? Especially since we are entering the third year of this pandemic and just about every time you blink there is a new surge someplace. Like I said, not a fan, but the little I’ve seen she does stay in touch with her constituents. But even she is entitled to some time off. But let’s talk about Ted Cruz for a second. A massive snowstorm hit Texas and I believe portions of a couple of other states. Knocked out the power and in some cases drinking water. Cruz bolted to Mexico. Beta O’Rourke, his Democratic opponent, in the in Cruz’s last re-election bid immediately started to work with volunteers to get food, water, and help to Texans who needed it. The only reason Cruz came back to Texas because he was shamed in to doing it. But if you want a comparison to what AOC did, here it is… Seriously you can’t get any closer then this. Both current members of the House. Both represent the state of New York. Both went to Florida. Both are seen not wearing masks. I don’t see any food or drink in front of Stefanik.

You really do suck at your comparisons. I’m not even sure why you dragged Ted Cruz into this because you are, once again, comparing apples to oranges. It's not just me and my comparisons. It's been my experience, that NOTHING is comparable here because of the "mental gymnastics" constantly going on to avoid admitting ANYONE on the Left could do something wrong. Not because the comparisons are honestly so far off the mark. But whatever keep claiming it, it's becoming comical at this point. Her crime she was seen in an outdoor restaurant or bar and wasn’t wearing a mask. Nope. I don't care that she was outdoors eating without a mask. Her other crime was she “gasp” flew to Florida. I don't care that she flew to Florida either. I also DON'T care that she left her state during a crisis. The issue is that SHE cares. But only if someone she doesn't like is doing it. More of her hypocrisy is that she condemns the state as terrible with not having enough rules and then goes there and doesn't follow her own convictions. She was also seen in a crowded bar partying maskless, not eating or drinking and definitely not distancing, by any stretch of the imagination. That's my opinion, since you asked me to label it. It's okay to let a different opinion stand.

She really doesn't do herself any favors in her asshattery or her response to it being pointed out. Are you really equating a short term emergency like the Texas freeze and covid? We've been dealing with covid for almost 2 years. No one is supposed to take a vacation or visit out of state family during that time? Yes, omicron is spiking, but it's definitely not the first spike. False comparison, false equivalency. DeSantis was AWOL for 2 weeks. And his explanation was full of holes. He took his wife to a cancer treatment but they went to a football game another day. If he can attend a football game, he can work from home. And why did he disappear for 2 weeks? Why didn't he say in advance that's what he was doing? There's speculation that he had covid. DeSantis's staff started everything with a taunting post, possibly to distract or deflect from their boss who was MIA. I agree she could have responded in a better way. However, that's really the only thing she did wrong in this situation. You can disagree with her politics, but this is basically the conservatives flipping out over nothing. Still waiting for you to answer these... No one is supposed to take a vacation or visit out of state family during that time? No one is supposed to take care of their spouse during cancer treatments and pick up the slack with their 3 small children? And his explanation was full of holes. He took his wife to a cancer treatment but they went to a football game another day. You're saying it's full of holes because during time off for cancer care and the holidays they took a break from the stress and went to a game to enjoy life for a moment? That's what you call "full of holes"? If he can attend a football game, he can work from home. How do you know he didn't get work done from home? What didn't get done?

The problem isn't that he took care of his wife or that he took care of his children or even that he went to a ball game. The problem is that he mysteriously disappeared without any advance notice and when he returned, was coughing a lot and seemed unwell. The problem is that he may have been infected with covid but has not announced that. The problem is that he may have had a bad case of covid and he downplayed the seriousness of it and failed miserably at mitigation. The problem is that he was MIA during a covid spike in his state. And a governor's responsibilities are a lot different compared to a US Representative when the House is not in session.
And if you're calling out hypocrisy, where are your posts calling out the absolute hypocrisy of almost every politician in the Republican Party?
No Supreme Court nominations with 11 months left on a president's term, but when their party was in power it was OK to ram through a nomination with 45 days remaining?
McConnell is pitching a fit about potentially ending the filibuster and shouting about traditions. He broke many traditions starting with refusing to hold hearings for judges, refusing to hold a hearing for a Supreme Court justice, refusing to bring up laws passed by the Democrats for a vote.
It's OK for corporations to be involved in politics, if they're donating to a Republican campaign. However, it's not OK for corporations to be involved in politics if they're criticizing Republican voter suppression laws.
Criticize President Obama for vacations and playing golf but remain silent when Trump takes significantly more trips and plays more golf frequently while benefitting his family company at the same time.
Claim to be the party of family values but support Trump who cheated on his wives, divorced twice and bragged that his celebrity status allowed him to sexually assault women (kiss women without their consent and grab them by their genitals).
Claim to be pro-life, but pro birth is more accurate. Vote against common sense gun laws, vote to expand gun rights, vote against helping children and families.
Vote to impeach President Clinton for lying about sex but vote against impeaching Trump for inciting an insurrection.
Constantly attack Hunter Biden but fail to call out Trump's clear nepotism.
Demonize coastal, liberal elites while holding a degree or even two from one of those elite liberal universities.
Rand Paul voted against emergency relief for natural disasters for other states but didn't hesitate to ask for it after the tornadoes in Kentucky.
16 Republicans voted against visas for Afghan interpreters but criticized Biden for not doing everything possible to help get them out.
Claim to be the party of smaller government, but big government is OK if it imposes your values. Texas abortion law, NH divisive concepts bill and other states like Idaho and Tennessee trying to control what educators can teach, banning vaccine mandates, banning mask mandates in schools
Republicans shouting about the debt or being fiscally conservative but only when they're the minority. Democrats are reckless for trying to pass the American Rescue Plan but when Republicans are in power, it's OK to pass unfunded tax cuts that cost the same amount.
Vote against the American Rescue Plan or the infrastructure plan but try to take credit for it.
Vote to raise the debt ceiling if you're the majority party but obstruct, vote against and play chicken if you're the minority party.
Shout about bipartisanship but only when you're the minority party. Don't make any efforts at bipartisanship if you're in the majority.
After 11 investigations into Benghazi and millions of dollars, vote against a committee to investigate the Jan 6 insurrection.
After the Democrats concede to every one of your demands, vote against a bipartisan committee to investigate the Jan 6 insurrection. Then complain the committee is a witch hunt and partisan.
My body my choice if it applies to masks or vaccines but not a woman's body.
Accuse the Democrats of being weak on crime, claim to be the party of law & order. The Trump supporting insurrectionists yelled f%ck the blue on Jan 6. Republicans insulted the Capitol police officers who bravely defended and protected them. Rewrite history and downplay the violence, its just an ordinary day with tourists.
Fox News Hosts texting Trump to call off the rioters, but hours later falsely claiming, without any evidence that it was antifa or Democrats in disguise.
Republicans have happily attacked Cuomo for sexual harassment but fail to call out their own members like Matt Gaetz.
Call out the Republicans for their hypocrisy, then maybe we can talk about AOC.
I'm not suggesting the Democrats are perfect and never guilty of hypocrisy. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over AOC's potential hypocrisy in tweets. I'm just tired of Democrats getting held to a higher standard.

pixiechick, if you’re finished with AOC, can you please do Ted Cruz now? Please start with his dumbass tweet (see top of this page) about how California can’t maintain a working power grid. (Not true, btw, but that’s what he was claiming.) Then he runs to Cancun when the power grid fails in Texas and people start freezing to death. Crickets on that one, apparently.

It was a problem for you yesterday afternoon. was coughing a lot and seemed unwell. I don't see anywhere where he was coughing. And "seemed unwell"? The thought process from the Left, when speaking of Biden seeming unwell: "Because honestly, it has nothing to do with his condition and everything to do with your frothing about politics." "Those are simply talking points." "so does this mean that you are an expert and can diagnose people from afar?" "When you post your opinions, post them along with reputable sources from professors, scientists, doctors, etc. as back up." "How do you know those YouTube videos weren’t edited? People are very good at editing videos to tell the story they want to tell instead of the real story.." "The fact is no matter how many videos you produce as your proof the only people who know for sure about his... state are his doctor and his wife and maybe close aids. Otherwise it’s pure conjecture by those who want it to be true." "Nattering talking heads are NOT "doctors, scientists, professors, etc"." "post EVIDENCE from SCIENTISTS, DOCTORS or PROFESSORS. Not news commentators who have to fill 24/7 airwaves nattering about Biden, Trump and everyone between." So, shall we apply those, or some form of those, to your opinion that DeSantis seems unwell? Or do they only apply to opinions you disagree with?
