I’m an Apple holdout because I didn’t want to pay for another subscription.
Josh Kushner is one of the owners of the capital venture group who is involved with Spotify. He’s Jared Kushner’s brother.

I cancelled my Spotify just prior to this. I couldn’t justify it anymore. Joe Rogan is dangerous, they have actively and openly enabled him. It’s only $10 a month, but given they actually pay him (an insane amount) for exclusivity I didn’t want *any* of my money to go to them. I just finished today moving all my playlists over to Apple Music. I won’t even use the ad supported free version now, and told them why when I cancelled. I used tunemymusic.com which made it incredibly easy - 2500 songs in my 30 or so playlists moved to Apple Music playlists in about 15 minutes. Go you!

I use Spotify on occasion to listen to music but I don't pay for a subscription. If I did, I would probably cancel, because I like Amazon music just as much. I did just go to Apple music and paid $11.99 for Neil Young's Greatest Hits album, to show my support. He does have some good songs, after all!

I don't use any music services, so I don't have to make this specific decision.
In making this sort of decision, I would have to weigh the pros and cons. Does this one bad thing outweigh the good things the company has done? And then I would have to investigate the company I am switching to. No point in taking business away from a company who did something I didn't approve of if I am going to switch to a company that does other things that I find just as objectionable.

Amazon Music is a great app and if you pay for Prime you already have access to it’s base version. Millions of songs.

I need to relearn Stitcher for Podcasts as I'd switched to Spotify. Unless someone has non-Apple, non-Amazon podcast recs?

We have a Spotify family account that 3/4 of us use daily. You can transfer playlists to other platforms so I’m going to cancel. My dad had polio and I admire Neil and Joni taking a stand. It’s been building for me and come to a tipping point, the way Spotify has let Rogan be the star of the platform, it’s not just the COVID, it’s so many lies, racism, misogyny that he pedals. I have no delusions, I know there are few clean businesses but I can do my best and make the choices where I’m able. I don’t buy hate chicken or craft supplies and I’m going to dump Spotify.

We have a family account and we all use it every day. We’re checking into alternatives.
I don’t think Spotify really cares about Neil Young and Joni Mitchell pulling their music. I think it will take someone much bigger and current pulling their music to get their attention.

Spotify’s stock tanked, lost billions and so many were canceling their membership, that Spotify stopped allowing people to cancel! Actions have consequences, they made a choice, now those who pay made their choice!! Now, how is that even legal to not let people cancel a service they don't want to pay for! They claimed it to be a “technical issue”

It’s all about money…
“Spotify said in a statement last week that it had removed more than 20,000 podcast episodes related to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. But so far the company has stood by Rogan, who was reportedly paid more than $100 million by the service in exchange for the exclusive rights to his podcast.
Rogan attracts 11 million users per episode, while Young brings in 6 million users per month.”
Actions have consequences—Spotify just list $4 billion in value this week.

I have no delusions, I know there are few clean businesses but I can do my best and make the choices where I’m able. I don’t buy hate chicken or craft supplies and I’m going to dump Spotify. For me, it came down to the $100M they paid him for exclusivity. You’re right, it’s pretty hard to find any corporation without flaws, somewhere. Apple carries Steve Bannons war room pandemic podcast (they all do), and I wish they didn’t. The difference is for me they’re not actively paying him out of their own pockets, and actively incentivizing his platform on there. By paying for exclusivity Spotify has made him effectively bulletproof in doing so, and that I won’t support financially. Under their own stated rules (and actions) they should’ve removed a ton of his guests content on there, and they haven’t. I follow this science podcast, and they are often getting posts removed on Facebook lately when they address his guests content debunking them point by point. Not for debunking, but because in order to debunk, they post the misinformation first, then they debunk it. They get reported by his listeners all the time, because they’ve figured out how to make facebooks moderation work for them to get stuff challenging him, taken down.

It looks like Joe Rogan's podcast is also on the Podcast app. So what are people doing about that? Its not. It’s a review of his podcast. Spotify paid $100M for exclusivity for a reason. 🙂 I actually went to Spotify when they snagged The Last Podcast on the Left exclusively. So now I can no longer listen to that one, that I did use them for. I’ll just have to suck that up, sadly. ETA, and digging it seems like they didn’t renew their contract with Spotify which is interesting, so they’re back on all platforms as of Feb 1st anyways.

Barry Manilow has also pulled his music. Barry Manilow tweeted yesterday that this was not true Ooh, good to know. Apologies for not double checking-- SO happened to mention it to me, and he's usually pretty on top of entertainment news, so I assumed his info was accurate. I'll have to let him know.

This just makes me happy that I pay for Apple Music. The exclusivity payment to Rogan is huge. I stand with Neil Young on this.

You’re not alone, quite a few on Twitter did the same thing, and when you just look at it in the podcasts search, it does look like the podcast itself.

Not sure how much that has to do with this, and how much it has to do with podcasters simply wanting freedom of platform for their listeners.
