Once again, I got the idea from another thread.
I have to admit I'm a trendy scrapper. If you look through my 20 years of scrapbook pages you can definitely identify what year I made them from what supplies and techniques I used. You can see my transition from 2 page layouts to one page layouts. You can see my transition from one product to the next. You can tell by the amount of photos I used and how I laid them out. You can tell by how much product I use. You can tell by how much mixed media I used.
I will admit to going back to some of my earlier pages and adding stuff to them to make them more current. For example, in the beginning I used to use mostly cardstock and I've gone back and added some patterned paper, washi tape, and enamel dots to those pages.
My newer pages are a mix of new and old trends.
Are you a trendy scrapper or do you do your own thing?

I wouldn't mind being a trendy scrapper, but I'm a cheap scrapper who has an abundance of supplies because I've been scrapping for so long. I organize by theme, so it's a mix of the old and the new.

I think I would fall into this category
BUT
I don't try to be trendy. I take what I like and I add it to my layouts. For example, I generally stayed away from the "one small photo on a 12x12 layout" trend. I will use multiple small photos, but more commonly you'll see 4x6 and 5x7 on mine. For example, I still enjoy inked edges even though they are off trend.
Some trendiness is actually growth of techniques and skills. Mixed media backgrounds: I think they are gorgeous and love buying the pp that is a watercolour look, or vicki b's backgrounds. But, it's kinda fun to do them myself, and I've learned a lot now so that it looks like I'm "on trend" but really I'm just enjoying myself. Oh - and new and improved tools (stamping platforms, blending brushes) has made some mixed media easier to approach.
Going back 5 years, I really can't see much change overall in my layouts. Maybe more white backgrounds. Maybe more mixed media. I feel like my style is fairly established now.
Do you think covid affected "trends"? I feel like there has been a REGRESSION in scrapbook trends which I think is a GOOD thing - dust off the good old ideas! - mainly because the disruption in shopping and supply chains has forced some influencers to look at old supplies again.

I would say no - I have a simple linear style that has evolved over time as I've tried new products and techniques but my current pages don't look out of place in albums that have a mix of pages from several years.

Sort of? I like to try new things...so the new things are usually the trendy things and I end up trying them. But I have an abundance of supplies (and now two new ink pads lol) so I do have a mix of old and new.

I think I used to be back in the day when I was doing 12x12 and it was the era of scrap magazines. Not really so much because I wanted to be trendy but because those are the things I saw, thought looked cool, and wanted to try. Or those were the types of supplies available.
Now I’d say mostly no. I do pocket pages and I love to use my old PL stash I bought when I made an brief 6 month return to scrapping before bowing out again until this year. Lol I will mix my rounded corner stuff with current things which seems to be super UN-trendy. 😂 I don’t care.

I love this question. I can answer with confidence, no. Most of my stash is 10+ years old. Probably 80% or more. I usually shop on eBay and Etsy for discontinued lines, as well as asking on the FSOT if I’m jonesing for a very specific item.
I very rarely follow a sketch and never really got into things like embroidery, eyelets etc. I’m just marching to the beat of my own little drum I guess!

Yes and no. I do try trendy things but sometimes it takes me a while to actually try them. It took me forever to try a brush script font and then I didn't use one ever again. I don't try every trend - some I just pin on Pinterest and that's where they stay. A lot of the time I stick to my personal style and I'm happy with that.

Now I just don't feel like it. For me simple is better.

I wouldn’t say I’m a trendy scrapper, but I do like to try new techniques, which tend be be “trendy”. Once I’ve done a new thing, if I like it, it goes into my repertoire. If I don’t, or if it’s not worth the effort, I leave it behind. Looking through my albums, you can see trends with techniques or products, but I think that’s true of most people doing a long-term creative hobby.

I don’t consider myself a trendy scrapper. I like to try new techniques but I rarely stick with them. I just made a layout last week that had paper and embellishments from 2013 to current. I’ve always scrapped 12x12 for my everyday books. I venture into other sizes for special projects. If I tried to keep up with all the trends I would never get anything accomplished.

While I experiment/incorporate trends that I like or pique my interest, my style is/has always been simple, clean, linear, modern, & minimalist. It is usually referred to as boring (although I prefer "magazine-ish," as aptly described by joblackford in this thread) & not often found in this product-driven industry.

I prefer to do my own thing. I want the focus to be on my photos. I use embellishments to help tell the story, and my style tends to be more “clean & classic” as one person described it. Not like the old CM layouts, not at all, but the photos definitely take center stage. I love patterned papers and stamped images. I like layers. I mat my photos and keep them full sized, sometimes enlarging one. I don’t crop them down, and I refuse to crowd them with a bunch of embellishments. I love color. White backgrounds are rare in my albums.
I browsed the latest issue of Scrapbook & Cards Today. I definitely don’t follow the trends. I used to teach and work for the LSS, and I had to follow the trends. I can see the evolution of the scrapbook world through my older albums. Now I get to do my layouts my way.

Trend-driven? Probably not much. But my overall look is definitely contemporary and minimalist-ish.
I've discarded certain trends that were big when I got into scrapbooking (through PL) and years later, I realise I've stuck to my guns on these particular matters. My PL albums are quite consistent and not too anchored in the trend waves we've experienced over the past decade.

Lol I will mix my rounded corner stuff with current things which seems to be super UN-trendy. 😂 I don’t care. You'd be surprised. Using hoarded rounded corner PL cards mixed with straight corner photos and cards is actually pretty trendy in the more nonchalant an innovative niche side of PL!

Yes and no.
If I like a new trend and it looks fun, I will try it. If it IS fun and I like the results of my efforts, I will keep doing it.
But I don't TRY to be trendy. I try to tell stories with photos and paper, so I don't use a trend JUST to be trendy. And I keep using supplies and techniques that worked for me in the past, often blending the old with the new.
I was just looking through an album from 2011 and the pages there look much like the ones I made last week. Lots of torn edges, layering, bold titles and a spin on the story. if now some of the layers may be stenciled inks or splatters where before they were papers, the look is still basically the same. Some one photo pages/some with a bunch. The only real change is the pages I am looking at are about young grand DAUGHTERS, rather than young grand SONS, so the pages are more feminine than my recent ones.
So I guess I do have my own style and follow the trends only when those trends help me be ME.

I don't think I am. I buy new releases every months, but I also buy old products when they're on sale. I recently bought some kits from 2015 that were being retired. (In my mind, 2015 only seems like yesterday, but it's seven years ago!) You wouldn't see the transition of styles and products in my albums either, because I am not a chronological scrapper. Today I am scrapping a photo from this week, and tomorrow I might be scrapping a photo from 2003. I do pocket pages and I love to use my old PL stash..... I will mix my rounded corner stuff with current things which seems to be super UN-trendy. 😂 I don’t care. I agonised over that when I was deciding on a format for my 2022 PL. I made up some pages using both straight and rounded corners, and in the end I decided that I really liked the look of the rounded corners! The only people who would know that rounded corners are off-trend and a bit daggy are other scrappers, and I don't know any other scrappers IRL. So anyone looking at my album will have no idea that I am several years out of date!

But I have an abundance of supplies (and now two new ink pads lol) so I do have a mix of old and new. Add me to the "sort of?" category too. I like to try new things, but I don't want to blow my budget on anything new or trendy. So I have a few pages with purchased foiled elements, but I never bought the rolls of pretty foil or specialized tools to make anything myself. I have a few oxide inks for mixed media backgrounds, but not every color. And though my cutting system is old school Sizzix, I've still managed to get my hands on a couple of pre-cut cut files to back so I could play along with that trend too. But I will admit to having about 30 or so bottles of Nuvo drops, lol So, just sort of trendy, in my own small way.

msliz, you mentioned foil. In my 2011 album, there are purchased foiled elements and big diecut circles (also purchased that way). Haven't looked recently at albums between then and now, but I know if I did I would find items punched out of foiled cs and maybe some things that were stamped and foiled with embossing powder. Then maybe some Minc'd elements. My 2022 cards and pages will sport some foiled elements I produce with my Spellbinders Glimmer system. And the circles I have on my pages today are probably cut on Silhouette or with another cutting system. So HOW I get a look may be trendy, but the look has stayed pretty much the same...

To an extent because often times whatever the manufacturers decided was trendy was really all they produced. So, for a certain time period in my albums everything has a little bit of metallic gold. There's an overwhelming influence of pink and aqua. I also went through an edge inking and die cut title phase. I don't follow any famous scrapbookers though so whether or not what I have done in the last five years is trendy I really don't know.

I do my own thing.
I've never followed trends, I just use what I like. I have purchased the latest and greatest or the "in thing", but not because I was jumping on "in thing" bandwagon. My purchase was because it was cute and I had to have it. I mix new stuff and old stuff.
My style is what some might call older scrapbook style. Stickers, matted photos or frames. patterned paper, usually but not always...multiple photos on one page. I scrapbook for me. I don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
I am a firm believer in "to each, their own". What I like or love, another may not, and vice-versa.

I would say I'm typically late to the trends, I remember when fussy cutting was becoming huge and thinking I would never have the patience to do that but of course now I do. White cardstock backgrounds were around for quite a while before I hopped onto that bandwagon, and I still love them. You can definitely see phases of my style through my albums, particularly as so much of what I scrap is time specific, a PL album completed in the current year or a travel album that has a lot of pages created in the few months following the trip, but I also feel like I could put layouts I made five years ago next to ones created this month, and they'd still both be undeniably mine.

I’ve thought about this question a bit more and I’m going to amend my previous answer. I’ve thought of some trends that I did try in the past. Remember the Smashbooks from K&Company? I was into those for awhile around 2011/2012. And then around 2017 or so I tried out the Project Life format for awhile. I still like PL as a quick way to get a lot of photos scrapped. And of course I still have a hefty case of PL cards waiting to be used So I’m going to say that I have dipped into trends here and there over the years but tend to gravitate back towards my “groove” where I’m comfortable.
