I’m pouting (hope Santa doesn’t see me!). I just want to work on my December daily but just haven’t been able to. I’ve been struggling with some medical stuff and getting it resolved but I am just SO TIRED. Sorry about the medical issue(s), paget . I hope you get to the bottom of it all soon. Until then, take good care, rest and stay hydrated. That's way more important than finishing this project ASAP! You come first. Yes, even before scrapbooking and pretty paper things. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg) Tomorrow's DD prompt is all about the meh stuff to honour Festivus, by the way. I took my supplies out to the dining room table the other day. Thought I might have some energy after work to work on it. I clearly don't. I feel you... I had my first day off and instead of documenting, I was a total bag of lazy bones. Two naps in one day, two. *hangs head in DD shame* DD is on hold! Winter weather is here and City of Austin is already warning us of the possibility of no water. Running around trying to get all last minute baking done, laundry, etc. UGH I just read about the major winter storm hitting the US. I hope all the US Peas in its path will stay warm and safe. And that you can get everything done in time, scrappypeanut . I think we're at the absolute bottom of the priority list for rebooking - we're not trying to get home from a trip before Xmas, and we're a big group to find seats for. We're warm and safe at home and I imagine a lot of people in our situation are just canceling. Sounds like you're stuck in you own major icy mess. Apparently, some places in the American plains could drop to -55°C/-67°F which... I have no words. Jack Frost has no chill this year. I hope you'll be ok where you are, joblackford . What's the mood like in the US right now? I imagine it's chaos with Christmas right around the corner. I imagine fostering must be incredibly rewarding, to bring some love and joy to these little furry friends. It truly is. I can't describe the feeling when a scared foster pup that cowered under furniture or tried to escape in the garden when they first arrived, comes to you for a scritchy-scratch behind the ear or just to lay down next to you. It will make any Grinch's heart grow a few sizes. The fact that an abandoned, neglected or, worse, abused animal decides to allow you in and start trusting you, even just a tiny bit, is simply incredible. Some of these dogs have every reason to not ever let another human in and yet they eventually do. It's all them. While we provide shelter, food, warmth, reassurance and encouragement, they deserve all the credit in the end. Every single foster has filled my heart with pride. We just get to love on them until they're ready to join their forever family and that's a beautiful gift.

We got our own freeze earlier than the rest of the country and as the bad weather moves into the middle and the east we’re actually going to switch over to torrential warm rain (“atmospheric rivers” every 24 hours for a while). The transition tonight is going to be very ugly - ice and snow on top of frozen snow and ice, very very cold (relatively, for our region, not as frigid cold as the middle gets!) But the rain should help clear things out before Christmas for us, I think. The rest of the country, not so much.
The timing is really bad - way too close to Christmas and too many people traveling. It’s going to be a mess. I haven’t seen any national news coverage but they’re going to be freaking out.
We are safe and warm. I think we’re about to call the trip off. Some members of the family might not be happy (2 will be happy to stay home, 2 will fight to go) but we’re at the point where it seems like it’s not worth it for my hubby and me. We’d like to take control and try to reclaim some fun for the holidays. We’ll see.

We're in a major deep freeze here too! It was -40 Celsius this morning, I've been reading and baking and just enjoying the hunkering down vibe. Still haven't touched my DD but I do have a photo+story for everyday so far. I'm giving myself permission to play after the holidays!

Why would the winter weather impact your water? I'm confused. I am thinking that water pipes will freeze and potentially burst. I hope everyone stays warm and safe during this crazy storm! My family up north has already hunkered down for the holiday weekend because of the snow and cold.

Currently working on day 20 - a photo of one of my KA stand mixers mixing up the cookie dough.
After that I will work on Day 15 - outside lights and day 21 - light drive around town.
Today will be about the weather here and in the US.
Tomorrow will be a photo of me in my Grinch costume I bought to surprise my nieces and nephews. Bummed I don't get to wear it for them.
Lots of sad journaling this year. I know not as sad as others but bummed.

Im in Texas (north of Austin) and our actual temperature was -1 today with it getting to a whopping 9. Windchill was -28. Our winds were up to 50 mph.
Austin better hope it doesn't get this cold. My area is kinda sorta prepared for this weather were Austin most definitely is not. No ice and just a dusting of snow...but brutal cold.

I knew Texas had problems with their electrical grid. And I learned last year that their heat was electrical. But I didn't realize it impacted the water. Thanks for explaining.

This and Austin is in Central Texas where it typically does not get this cold, so the city is less prepared because it is pretty unusual - well it used to be! scrappypeanut , sending positive thoughts you way. I lived in ATX years ago and love that city so much. Hate to see y'all having issues again this year. I am in DFW and we also have aging systems but "should" be better prepared because it does get below freezing most years. In 2021 the issue was several days in a row well below freezing and that basically wreaked havoc on water, electrical, gas, everything. My entire downstairs flooded because of a burst pipe after 72 hours below freezing and no power. Thankfully this year, so far, the weather should get close to or above freezing each day so we should be OK. It is 11 F right now which is not typical, but manageable. It says it will only get to 25 today, but it is sunny, so I am hopeful that helps keep things manageable. We did our weather prep last night so the house should be OK. I've already been out for what should be my final food shop for the holidays...will send out DH for anything last minute tomorrow! We really need our state gov't to buckle up and make the investments in modernizing our systems for the future.

My mom is out of the hospital. She's home and doing better. Surgery will be in one month.
Thank you all so much for all the good thoughts and kind words. Your support means so much to me. You have no idea.
We just finished cleaning the house. The kid is making us a frozen pizza. Christmas is done. It's 4 out. The cats are wearing red buffalo plaid gear (Charlie in a bandana, Milo in a bow).
I'm working on day 13, the Christmas Swap.
I have 7 and 9 half finished.
We're starting the Addams Family on Netflix and settling in for some scrapping and puzzling.
What a week, y'all. What a week.
Bring it, Santa.

I’m glad I’m doing a digital project because our entire holiday plans have been upended. I’m going to have an interesting time reframing everything so that when I look back at this album I can remember more of the fun bits instead of the stressful stuff. Feeling a lot more relaxed now that the trip is canceled. We’re hoping the ice melts soon so we can go get some festive-ish food for our tiny holiday at home, but if not we’ll have red and green pizza from the freezer 😝

And a Festivus for the rest of us! Happy secular holiday, everyone. I hope you've all aired your grievances and remembered to say no to bagels. Kramer thanks you. December 23rd: NAUGHTY-LISTED // In this merry month of cheer and good things, it can be good to take a moment to reflect on the less perfect. It's not all poinsettias and glitter. And within the cracks, we find the stories that reveal another side of us, one that can be delightfully silly but also reveal lessons learnt, courage found and the true meaning of community. Story prompt: "Ho ho no!" Let the spirit of Festivus carry you for today's story by embracing the airing of grievances, be it for therapeutic or simply funny reasons. (document a "Made the nice list despite..." fact for each person/pet living under your roof - this can be a way of recording the less perfect things with humour and whimsy, no need to lean in too heavily here so think of your one kid spending too much time on a particular video game right now, your dog chewing on wrapped gifts or your spouse doing something wrong while helping decorate the house) (document a major airing of grievances if you've had a meh month or even an ugh year - think of going letter-style à la "Dear December 2022, I wanted to love you but you didn't make it easy...") (document one big woops moment that happend to you this month - the tree coming down, breaking a family heirloom ornament, messing up a classic recipe you were prepping for Christmas, etc.) Creative prompt: Be your own grungy Grinch by embracing darker, moodier colours, tearing paper, inking up edges and/or using a black & white photograph. Song of the day:

Is the weather evolving positively so you can eat something else than pizza in the next days? (i had to Google "red and green pizza" and I'm still unsure what it exactly is when you buy it frozen... Basil and tomato or peppers? #averyAmericanthing Love discovering these typical US things through the DD-ers!) My mom is out of the hospital. She's home and doing better. I know not as sad as others but bummed. *hugs* I know you're so very sad about Milo but you tried. It just couldn't work out which has nothing to do with your own efforts. We're in a major deep freeze here too! It was -40 Celsius this morning, I've been reading and baking and just enjoying the hunkering down vibe. GOODNESS ME, NO! NOOOO! That is positively Siberian. I'm shivering just thinking about it. I was out and about this afternoon wearing a winter coat (granted, unbuttoned) and it was 17°C! I don't even know how I'd manage opening the front door with the temperatures you're having. US Peas, how are the homeless coping? I know there's been an increase of homeless people, particularly people living in their car, with the current economic situation and this terrible cold is so worrying. There's no way there are enough emergency shelter places for all of them, right?

Yes. We were without water and power (we were more lucky than most as we had either one for most of the time,( but others had no water and no power for days on end (5-6 for many).
Sadly, when the street pipes burst, they did not bother to winterize them when they had the roads all dug up to fix the pipes soooooooo they are risk for breaking again. They didn't learn from the previous freeze So far so good. Everything is made, laundry done, all I have left to do is making icing for things tomorrow. Still waiting on last gift that is to arrive tomorrow (we shall see).

DIY and small isn't what you planned and were hoping for but it's still worth having a nice time with your kids and husband. I do get why it's so hard to get into the Christmas spirit with everything going on. This is a year "without" and it sucks baubles. Big time. Best recovery wishes to your father. I hope you can find a different day to celebrate all together in person like NYE or Three Kings Day (even if it's not part of your usual traditions). Hang in there. 2023 is coming and wiping that slate clean can feel very therapeutic.

sleepingbooty Water freezes at 32°F here where we don't believe in the metric system, so 0°C. 😁 And as for the homeless population, typically cities convert empty stadiums, schools, or even shopping malls into shelters to help protect people from the cold (or other natural disasters, like hurricanes). At least, that is how it was when I lived in Chicago many moons ago.

I hope the homeless will be ok. And the stray animals. I checked and Russia's European territory excluded (because it's just so damn cold there), the coldest ever recorded temperature in Europe was -52.6°C/-63°F in Northern Sweden. In the 1960s! I'm amazed at what you all are going through right now. It's one for the history books.

Basil and tomato or peppers? #averyAmericanthing Love discovering these typical US things through the DD-ers!) It isn't a thing, it's just me trying to think of a food that I have in the freezer that could seem vaguely Christmasy! lol. I think it had red sauce and pepperoni and some green peppers on it. I could dip it in pesto too. So Christmasy. We might get supermarket sushi to eat with my MIL but I think that's about as fancy as I can be bothered with. No jello mold salads for me this year. I might put cranberry sauce on cream cheese. That's festive. I'm not very good at doing special traditions/celebrations for just the two of us at home. The weather is improving here. I just went outside to get icicle photos while I can. It looks like the roads will be safe by tomorrow. I just saw footage of Vermont with warm 50F weather and flooding, which is what we're probably going to have soon. I have had to train myself to say "below freezing" instead of what I grew up saying (below zero or negative temps) because of the misunderstandings with 32 being freezing here. Below zero C is a lot warmer than below zero F. Locally there are severe weather shelters that open in dangerous conditions. I think there's active outreach to find unhoused people and let them know where they can stay safely, and I think they can usually bring their pets too (not always an option at some shelters). The buses all have a message on the front that the shelters are open . Some people in Seattle are arguing that they should be open all winter, not just for a few days in freezing weather.

Happy Christmas Eve to all! If you celebrate Christmas on this day like we do in my family (and culture in general), merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. May the weather not be too bad for the American DD-ers (stay warm and safe, please). May the food be filling. May the company be delightful. And may the gifts bring joy to everyone. 💃🎁🎄 December 24th: EARLY // As we head into the "mad week" of togetherness, celebrating and staying up late, today's prompt is all about looking at what happens in the early, quieter hours of these days. Keep a record of how you spend the time before the usual family gathering hours and partying. Story prompt: "Early bird(s)" Three French hens (that's my cue!), two turle doves and a partridge in pear tree? Nope, just you doing something early during these festive times! (document what you get up extra early for right now: starting to cook the big festive dinner, preparing a special Christmas breakfast for all, helping Santa put all the gifts under the tree, walking the dog before the house gets super busy, taking some quiet time just for yourself, etc.) (document something you do early as a tradition or as an exception this year such as picking one gift to unwrap after Christmas Eve dinner instead of waiting until midnight/the 25th in the morning, celebrating NYE before midnight because you're so pooped from all the celebrating that you don't want to stay awake until actual midnight on the 31st, taking down the tree right after Christmas because you're ready to dive straight into the spirit of the New Year, etc.) Creative prompt: Recreate the early time of the day documented through your colour choices. Muted blue and warm yellow to evoke dawn, light blue and white for early morning, etc. For other times of the day, make sure to include a photo that captures the "early time" of the event/tradition you're recording (time on your wrist watch, zoom out to include the view of the clock on the wall). Song of the day:

Song of the day: Just an aside, but I buy a new Christmas album every year. (Yes I'm a dinosaur who still buys CDs.) And this album was the one I bought this year. I love it!
